Holyfield: I'll fight in Germany!

Out of action since his unanimous decision loss to Larry Donald in November at New York's Madison Square Garden, Evander Holyfield returned to midtown Manhattan, where the champ was in good spirits despite being sidelined in the United States indefinitely.

Asked about the battery of tests that New York State Athletic Commission Chairman Ron Scott Stevens has demanded before Holyfield steps back into the ring, Holyfield replied, "It's not important right now. I think I'm going to fight outside the country for now, in Germany. I'll approach that bridge when I come to it."

Holyfield (38-8, 25 KO's) continued, "I never failed the test, the whole thing is just about opinion, what a person felt that I did good or not, everyone has an opinion." Asked if he felt it was age discrimination at age 42, he responded, "It could be, but I think it's somebody pulling my chain and bit off something he shouldn't have."

Sounding much like the fighter he was a decade ago, Holyfield said of his future, "I'm looking to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world again."

Asked about the retirement of Lennox Lewis, who Holyfield fought to a controversial draw with in 1999, Holyfield stated, "I don't think he'll come back, I think he made up his mind, and I think he did a good job and he retired as the champion."

Asked what he's been doing besides work on his foundation, Holyfield admitted, "That's it, my foundation is a big part of my life, my life is a part of the foundation."

etc.

I am beggining to worry about one of my favorite fighters of all time. I think he might need a catscan or other. He is acting delusional. What the hell is wrong with him? I suppose worrying was a valid option several months, if not years ago. This is getting sadder by the day.

But if he came to the bridge, didnt he already approach it? he cant even speak correctly Evander is my favorite fighter of all time.He should have hung em up after the ugly fights with Ruiz. He will never be undisputed champ again, and will obviously die trying :(

Hey as long as Holy can make good money from boxing he should do it, maybe he does not fight for himself but for his kids and family members.

Ok. This is where I have to draw the line. If those people close to him really loved him, dont you think they would at least try and persuade him into not fighting anymore. It is like godzhand said: he will eventually "die trying". Those ring wars he was in, would kill a small elephant. Take that in combination with his struggles involving Hepatitis A, and the accompanied heart condition and you have a walking medical time bomb. It would literally break my heart to see him seriously hurt in the ring, and I was almost at that point against James Toney. There is no way, and I mean NO WAY in sam hell, he can fight the big guys in the division. The Klitschko brothers would kill him literally. This whole "Undisputed" thing, is getting pretty annoying IMO and sad for fans of his. He is acting delusional, like he just moved up to heavyweight. He does not have the reflexes, stamina, or punching power he used to have. All of those things were washed away with him growing older, and I feel he should just accept that.

As far as sanctioning bodies in Europe, I am not sure what medical tests a fighter must pass in order to be deemed "fighting safe". Surely they would submit their original fighters to such tests, and Holyfield should be no different. If they do let him fight, and something happens to him.......I am going to be pissed off at the sanctioning bodies and medical examiners. This is just a joke, that was once a dream, and now completely sick and twisted.

It seems to be the curse of good boxers to not stop while they're ahead ... It's sad the number of boxers that fight until their brain is half dead.

I thought I was losing faith in boxing after the Mosley/DLH rematch decision.....But if Holyfield gets seriously hurt, I am going to lose faith + be pissed off beyond imagination. This can not, must not, and will not go any further without him being damaged permanently.

There is plenty of room for him as a commentator, and people would welcome him with open arms. I would. I would like to see him on H.B.O. after dark or Showtime. He and Jim Lampley would be a badass combo IMO.

I would have no problem with Tyson fighting utill he was a vegetable, I could care less about him. This can not happen to one of boxing's "good guys". God damn it.

I agree being a trainer would be a good idea for Holyfield but as far as fighting THERE IS NO DOUBT IN MY MIND THAT EVANDER HOLYFIELD SHOULD NEVER BOX AGAIN.

lets hope he doesn't step up against wladimir in germany.

he's waiting to be KO COLD - and that's a very dangerous prospect for anyone, let alone someone already suffering brain injury symptoms.

Me too dude. Me too. :(

It really "bothers" me alot. I have never had the sympathy for a fighter like I do for Holyfield. To come all the way to this.......a shell of his former self. I was not happy hearing how one of our posters thinks, as well as encourages him to keep fighting. Risking this man's health for the sake of entertainment is not cool to me. Especially when it is "the Real Deal" we are talking about.

Him beating Rahman a couple of years back was cool though......

me too, its hard to see holyfield got hit like it was to tyson. what a heart that man got, never quit. but now he really should, he have nothing more to prove. now its clear that he is his former self, its just stupid to keep believing he could be the champ again. yep its was cool to se him beat rahman, but rahman is not as good as many thing :).

Evander holyfield is walking blind in a sea of creatures. He is so shot Don King won`t touch him!!
In Europe you can fight no matter what condition your in so Holy will take a beating there. Its a great shame and a horror story. Being a three time champ isn`t the only thing he`ll share in common with Muhammad Ali when his career is through!

Holy's BoxRec display (http://boxrec.com/boxer_display.php?boxer_id=000499)

Take a look at his wins on paper again. IMO highly impressive and deserving of a "Top 10 Heavyweight" of all time ranking. Thus my including him in that said list. This guy was "The Real Deal". He beat some SERIOUS names, in the peak of their prime none the less.

Damn that record is impressive. Forget his losses.

I am also slightly disgusted at Europe's lack of regulation concerning "shot" fighters. Can the europeans on this board stick up for their difference in culture please. Or is it simply ok for Holyfield to die?
