Great call on Rocky 3, maybe the worst Stallone movie of all time (and that includes "stop or my mom will shoot" and "oscar")

"stop or my mom will shoot"

I was hoping my "memory block" would keep me from remembering that movie. Estel Getty was the highlight of that film acting wise. She is no "Academy Award Winner" herself; despite her impressive "Golden Girls" resume.

Yeah it did have Clubber lang,as well as Thunderlips aka Hulk Hogan....as well as one of the worst scripts in motion picture history

the Boxer, with Daniel Day Lewis. Pretty cool movie that not a lot of people have seen. It's about a boxing prospect that's gone to jail for an IRA bombing, and how he deals with life/love when he gets out. There's a couple really good boxing scenes in there, as well as it being a really solid movie.

I dont really rate million dollar baby.

1. Rocky 1
2. Rocky 2-5
3. Great White Hype
4. Raging Bull
5. Ali

Theres some on the back of my head Im missing. I didn't rate raging bull as high as most mostly because the movie is more of psychological lesson for me rather than just a movie. Not to mention I dont find black and white attractive...its suppose to add depth and effect but I just cant follow.

Rocky 5 was bad, but 3 takes the cake

I can't believe that multiple people have listed "Play it to the Bone" that was a horrific flick, I wanted to gouge my eyeballs when I saw Banderas and Woody exchanging punches, Harrelson looked like a bolemic Angel Manfredy

Sac-Bone was a fun movie to watch, not from a boxing aspect sure but it had some goodtimes in the film. Nothing great but I liked it, but im also a fan of Woodys work.

My top boxing movies

Great White Hype
Rocky Marciano
When we were Kings

Just my top 3, I really wanted to see Dark Cloud but it was hyped up in boxing circles but I havent heard anything about it for a year or so.

I dont care what anybody says, everyone can rip on Rocky 5 all they like. I wont jump on the bandwagon it was a semi decent movie it isnt half as horrible as everyone makes it out to be and I enjoyed it. Infact I probably watched 5 more than the others in my Rocky collection (not to say it is the best) but I dont see why all the hate.

Rocky IV was so much worse than III and V

When We Were Kings is a documentary so it shouldn't compete with other features.

Haven't seen Million Dollar Baby yet.

I think I would rank On the Waterfront #1 and Pulp Fiction #2, since no one said how much of the plot should revolve around boxing. Do these count as "boxing" movies?

Anyway, a top 5 to go along with other lists:

1. Raging Bull (1980)
2. Rocky (1976)
3. The Great White Hype (1996)
4. The Milky Way (1936)
5. Rocky II (1979)

Honorable mention to the silly comedy The Prize Fighter (1979)

I watched Raging Bull about 2 years ago and I am a huge fan of De Niro and Pesci but I just couldnt get into that movie. I recently bought it a short while back though so hopefully I will enjoy it better.

On The Waterfront is an incredible movie; anyone seen it? There's no actual in-ring action, so I don't imagine the person starting this thread had it in mind...

Another decent movie was set in South Africa and called The Power of One. It's worth a dollar rental...

I liked Rocky 3, cause it had Eye of the Tiger as a theme song. Most of the big things happened, with Micky dying and Adrian coming out of her shell, Rocky losing, redefining his fighting style, Apollo Creed taking over. Rocky 2 and 4 are actually my least favorite, just because I feel like nothing happens. i didn't see V cause of all the bad hype, but I'm still interested.

I was not a believer that Will Smith could play Ali. But that proved me wrong as hell. He looked like him, talked like him, and played the role to a T. I was thorougly amazed, and I believe that was the second best portrayal of a boxer that I have seen, next to Deniro's performance as Jake Lamotta.

Top notch performances from Smith, Jamie Foxx, and Jon Voight, but still a too-long, by-the-numbers, TV Movie of the week that tried to tackle too much and failed at endearing Ali to the crowd who wasn't already familiar with him...

Movie of the week that tried to tackle too much and failed at endearing Ali to the crowd who wasn't already familiar with him...

Things I was dissapointed with about Ali:

1.) The ending occured after the "Rumble in the Jungle"
2.) Slow motion scenes accompanied with music were too long; not enough action
3.) Movie plot seemed to only follow a "section" of Ali's career.

Things I thought were cool:

1.) Toney's portrayal of Joe Frazier
2.) Foxx's portrayal of Bundini
3.) Voight's portrayal of Howard Cosell

Forementioned in previous posts of course, but
I am sure I left things out. But that movie was good overall.
Ironic, Toney portrayed a "silent type". LOL.

I really wasn't all that high on Million doller Baby, it had some good acting but the script was crap.

Raging Bull
Great White Hype
Play it to the Bone
Ali
Rocky 1 (rocky 3 sucked and was corny as hell.)

hey knives, you can critique any Rocky movie after the II. After II, they all have their problems. but don't bash rocky III and have the balls to put Play it to the Bone on the list. thats laughable.

In no particular order:
Great White Hype
Rocky 1 & 2
Don King: Only in America (HBO/Vingh Rhames)
Raging Bull
When We Were Kings.

I havnt seen Million Dollar Baby yet.

Can you please list out the things that you would like me to do in the future: because Ultimately I am confused as to which ones I can critique. If I can downgrade any Rocky after 2, why can I not do the same for 3?

after all, 3 comes after 2.

Play it to the bone was hilarious and cool.
Rocky 3 was hilarious because it was corny as hell.

I haven't seen it, but every time I talk to my buddy about this, he brings up Diggstown.

Also Gladiator with Cuba Gooding.

Anyone seen these?

The boxing scenes in Sgt. bilko and Popeye were quite funny. Best humorous boxing scene would have to be in City Lights with Chaplin.

are you a reporter or something? talk about taking a statement out of context. you quote half a sentence and then tell me it doesnt make sense. most sentences cut it half can be a little confusing. I believe I said you can't critique Rocky 3 THEN go on to say Play it to the Bone was "hilarious and cool"

My favorites are:

1 Raging Bull- Deniro gives a superb performance

2 Ali- most realistic boxing scenes of any fight movie

3 Digstown- what a concept, a boxer fights 8 fights in one day. didn't George Foreman do that!

4 Rocky IV- had to pic one Rocky movie although I hate the fight scenes

5 On the waterfront- "I could've been a contender!"

Kind of not connected to the thread but Million Dollar Baby is the tie in:

Anybody read F.X. Toole's "Rope Burns"? There are some stories in there (other then Million Dollar Baby) that might be fun if put onto the big screen (although MBD did tie alot of them together...) I personally think the one about the old cut-man would be fun... Any thoughts?

PS- Pretty good collection of fictional boxing stuff if you have not read it.

Hahaha, much thanks to you! It really is a shame about O'Toole, he showed some real promise as a writer- the best part was he seemed to have a genuine love for the sport and a knowledge and creativity to go with it.

Rocky movies are not all that great of boxing movies. Good movies, but not good BOXING movies. All they have in them is Rock's opponent beating the crap out of him in the first rounds and Rocky doesn't even use any sort of defense. Then he miraculously comes back in the late rounds and knocks his opponentes out. Ali is an excellent boxing movie, followed by Million Dollar Baby and Cinderella Man.
