View Full Version : What fights do you think are overrated
mhager91490 10-24-2009, 03:54 AM What are some fights that you heard or were told were great but didn't live up to your expectations when you finally saw them.
Corrales-Castillo 1- I ended up watching this fight a few months after it happened and in that time I was told that it was one of the greatest fights of the last ten years or of all time from some people. I thought it was a very good fight, very brutal and it was a great show of heart from both men but in the end I had seen a lot of fights that I liked much more.
"The War" Hagler vs Hearns- Again I was told that this was one of the greatest fights of all time and the first round got me going but after that the fight seemed to fizzle out, great first round though, it is one of my favorite rounds in history but the fight as a whole seemed dissapointing to me.
What are the fights that dissapointed you when you finally watched them?
blacklodge 10-24-2009, 04:23 AM Benn-McClellan. I didn't see it live and obviously had heard what happened, and also what a great fight it was despite McClellan's injury. FOTY and what not. I saw it finally, and while it was an impressive display of guts and power, it was ultimately 2 guys who were too much in love with their power awkwardly swinging for the fences instead of the better boxing skill sets I had seen from both of them at times previous.
Hagler-Antuofermo I. Not that it was a bad fight, but I had always read and heard it was close. It wasn't. I don't think I gave Antuofermo more than a couple of rounds.
Leonard-Hearns I. My Dad wrote a check his butt couldn't cash after saying he would take me to the closed circuit theater live broadcast, and then didn't. Boo hoo, I know. I finally saw the whole fight years later, and although there is good ebb and flow, it is not deserving of "superfight" status, even if it contains superfighters.

I thought Corrales-Castillo was an amazing fight with incredible ebb an flow. The more I see Hagler-Hearns though the more I am inclined to agree with you. Great first round, but a bit overrated in a historical pantheon.
RightCross94 10-24-2009, 06:57 AM Alot of Heavyweight fights. Sometimes you look through Ring Mag FOTY lists, and you see some Heavyweight title fight that wasn't even that good at all, just there cos they're HW's

I think most of the heavyweight fights that have been chosen FOTY have been pretty good and worthy of their accolades, but I know what you're saying overall. V. Klitschko-Lewis would be a perfect example. Good fight, but hardly in the realm of great fights past or future.
I would give big ups to Holyfield-Bowe 1, Norton-Holmes, Ali-Fraizer 1 and 3, the Patterson Johanson wars, Dempsey-Firpo and some others.......but overall, most aren't on the level of the better fights at the lighter weights.
blacklodge 10-24-2009, 07:11 AM The mention of heavyweight fights reminded me I forgot Lennox Lewis-Vitali Klitschko. "Heavyweight Gatti-Ward", my arse. Watching those two lummoxes fall all over the place and throw amatuerish punches had me pulling my hair out. Never understood the buzz about that fight.
PED User 10-24-2009, 07:17 AM Holyfield-Tyson 1. It was a hell of an event, and a pretty good fight, but definitely not worthy of FOTY for 1996. Too much holding, the action wasn't all that great. Barrera-McKinney craps all over it. So does Gatti-Rodriguez. Despite the unsatisfying ending, Bowe-Golota 2 was much better as well.
Quartey-De La Hoya. I hear people talk about this as a "great fight" and "the best welterweight fight since Leonard-Hearns 1". Ha, 10 of the 12 rounds were fairly slow, and much of the fight was a pose-fest. Not really a great chess-match where one guy slips up and the other makes him pay with a nice shot, but two guys staring at each other. 2 exciting rounds and 10 slow rounds do not make a great fight. As far as great WW fights after Leonard-Hearns 1 (which has also gotten overrated, but still definitely a better fight than Quartey-DLH), Brown-Trice 1 takes a royal dump on DLH-Quartey. So does Davis-Breland.

Yeah, I didnt necessarily mean just the ring foty's, but more specifically the HW fights you hear dudes going on about
Zarco 10-24-2009, 07:50 AM hagler vs hearns. great first round...but then what?
PED User 10-24-2009, 07:52 AM The Ring just used to pick any HW fight and call it FOTY.
They picked Young-Foreman as FOTY over Saad-M.Johnson 1.
Princemanspopa 10-24-2009, 09:27 AM Leonard-Duran 1 -
Very ugly fight, lots of mauling and clinching tactics from Duran, described as great infighting by some, but to me Leonard was the only one really throwing punches in these exchanges, flashy or not.Duran's effort in the 15th round pretty much summed up the entire fight.I thought Duran won and don't argue the decision but in time it's become an overrated performance by Duran and a somewhat underrated perormance by Leonard. The only period where Duran really dominated was early on,I think I gave him the first four rounds.
Ali-Frazier 3 -
The thriller in manila and supposedly the greatest heavyweight fight of all time and it wasn't even the best fight of their quite overrated trilogy.both men looked out of shape to me,Ali especially and the pace was fairly slow.the first five rounds where somewhat interesting,Ali looked sharp and accurate with the combinations that he threw but down the stretch the pace really slowed, watching Ali simply lie on the ropes and take arm punches isn't very interesting or exciting to watch.Frazier wasn't particularly impressive just as Ali was terrible. The greatest portion of the fight was the last three rounds where Ali used Frazier face as target practice and just bludgeoned him, although again,it wasn't so much that Ali was impressive as Frazier was just a walking zombie at that point and Ali should have knocked him out as he was there to be finished.Ali had failed to knock out an opponent who had a suspect chin and was at the worst point in his career.
barrera-Morales -
The whole trilogy really, the first fight was great but the second fight was an absolute stinker where barrera reused to fight for the first six rounds and strill somehow walked away with the decision and the third fight was ok but it was sloppy as hell with alot of air punching and silly swinging involved. They call this one of the greatest trilogies of all time, when in truth it wasn't even better than Harding-Andries.
Gatti-Ward -
I don't see how anyone can claim these were some of the greatest fights of all time,Gatti has had far more exciting fights than the series he had with Ward, sure the 9th round was exciting but the rest of the fight was very good fight at best.I also wonder how many have actually watched fights one and two because both fights were fairly one sided(the second fight in particular)where Gatti simply boxed and moved and won two clear decisons. It doesn't rank up there with Gatti's fights with Ivan Robinson or his fight with Rodriguez, fights two and there were as average as a fight can be
I don't see how anyone can call Leonard-Hearns overrated, what more out of a fight do you want? It had everything you can ever want out of a great fight.

Wow disappointed by those 2 fights.
First time I ever heard that

You should of heard the reaction I got when I said that on Yahoo Answers, "You're gay" or "You don't love boxing". The only thing I wish I could of done is watch them without knowing the outcome beforehand. That is the only bad thing about watching fights from the past, there is no mystery.
Got to say Leonard schooling Duran in the No Mas fight and the Leonard Hagler fight are both over rated.
Leonard v Hearns I, v Benetiz and v Kalule should be the fights of his that are recognised IMO.

I agree that Gatti-Ward was overrated, not only because of the superior fights with Robinson I (II wasn't too shabby, but not as good as I obviously), Wilson Rodriguez and I'll toss in Gabe Ruelas too, but also because of the status of both fighters at the times of the fight. I think it matters that neither of them were really players, just box office draws, otherwise Lee-Locicero would be considered the greatest fight of all time. It was entertaining as hell, but was more of a spectacle than a fight that mattered.
I've said Leonard-Hearns was overrated, but mainly in a comparative sense with other great fights. Relative to what I was saying about Gatti-Ward, this fight really, really did matter (perhaps as much as any fight ever), but to use it as a measuring tool or a benchmark for other fights (DLH-Quartey and DLH-Trinidad) to me is excessive.

Agree with both of these mentions, although my gripe with Corrales-Castillo was the mouthpiece spitting (which clearly influenced the outcome) more than anything else.
Hagler-Hearns loses a lot of its luster once you've seen it, and as others have noted it was mostly a one-round affair.
warp1432 10-25-2009, 03:34 AM Leonard Hearns 1.

Not a reference to you, but I don't see what everyone weas worked up about. He spit the mouthpiece after the 1st knockdown, Weeks told him he'd take a point if he did it again. Knocked down again, spit the mouthpiece again, and Weeks took a point. Yeah, it allowed him a little more time to recover, but he was penalized justly, and in a closely contested fight that could have been huge. What else could he have done other than DQ Corrales, which would have been a real outrage.
Dynamite Kid 10-26-2009, 09:05 AM Spinks vs Holmes, how on earth was that FOTY, it was one of the most boring fights you can you watch, its interesting to a degree but no waay is it FOTY material.
I fully agree with Castillo vs Corrales being overrated. Here is the problem i have with it.................the crowd were not into it that much before the dramatic finish, it was not like Ward vs Gatti, MAB vs Morales were the crowd was going nuts and the action was swinging one way then the other, towards the end it did but not throughout like the aforementioned. I dont consider the earlier toe to toe action that great either. Definitely overrated from my perspective.
Witherspoon vs Holmes is extremely overrated, it was not a great fight.
Norton vs Holmes was a great fight to me but it probably does get overrated to, i mean that fight was a tactical fight for most of the way with Holmes exclusively using the jab.
Princemanspopa 10-26-2009, 09:22 AM The Norton Holmes fight was exciting because of the great comeback that Norton made,by the eight round or so,Holmes had virtually shut him out of the fight with a jab, there were times where Holmes was simply coasting and hopping around and sticking a jab in Norton's face and I only had Norton winning two rounds at that point, but from that point on Norton made came back very strong and swept away virtually every round in the last six.The last two rounds were as good as action as you will ever see out of a fight

For once i agree with you, i could not get excited watching Morales v Barrera or Gatti v Ward... The Ali v Frazier fight was good yet nowhere near as good as their first encounter, yet i enjoy Leonard v Duran (1) but only because i have the closed-circuit verson which is far superior coverage than the other versions...
Leonard v Hearns (1) is fantastic viewing.

Monzon-Bonavena I and Torres-Cotton. Both fights of the year but they didn't seem as exciting as a FOTY should be.
