View Full Version : Does "Irish" Mickey Ward deserve to be in the Hall of Fame??
ThunderGatti 03-24-2005, 11:53 AM I was thinking about this for the past few days and I know that yes Ward is a journey man, but he was a tough out for many opponets (ask Zab Judah), fought 3 Ring Magazine's Fight of the Year and won two of them. Im pretty sure he's held some alphabet title. But I think my point is he did more for boxing by the way he fought than compared to how many W's he put up or titles he held. But does that get you into the Hall?? I think eventually he should get in.
puppy_dogg 03-24-2005, 11:57 AM gatti has no real "greatness" but he will probably end up in HOF for his excitment. ward helped contribute to that excitment but thats a tough question. if i had to make the choice i dont think i would put him in,
I don't see anything that makes me think Ward deserves to be in the hall of fame. I love him as much as the next guy, but they man was pretty much an average fighter who was insanely entertaining. His heart and toughness are greatly admired, but his body of work isn't too impressive.
I question whether Gatti deserves to be in the hall of fame as well.
mic573 03-24-2005, 11:59 AM No way does Mickey Ward deserve to be in the Hall Of Fame. If Mickey Ward gets in the Hall Of Fame then they should just shut the whole thing down and start over. I don't mean to be harsh on a good guy like Mickey Ward but he doesn't compare to the greats who rightfully deserve to be there. Neither does Gatti.

My thoughts exactly.
ThunderGatti 03-24-2005, 12:07 PM Good points. Gatti will be in thats for sure I guaruntee that. There is an article in the Boxing 2005 where Gatti is on the cover that explains if Barry McGuigan is in Gatti is def in.
But back to Ward i dunno, the question still remains he aint gonna get in on talent but was he exciting enough?? Again I think so.
that reminds me is "Boom Boom" Mancini in the Hall?? B/c if he is not than I would see it hard for Ward to get in.
ThunderGatti 03-24-2005, 12:14 PM run w/ knives i will bet any money Gatti will be in. Sorry to dissapoint you.
mic573 03-24-2005, 12:15 PM No he wont. He is not that good of a fighter. I am sorry man. he is simply a "fan-favorite".
having balls and being a punchingbag does not make you hall of fame material.
Gatti will be in whether he deserves it or not. I personally don't believe he should but he will be.
PessimisticPug 03-24-2005, 12:40 PM Neither Gatti nor Ward belong in the hall as individuals. But putting them together for a scrap or two and you have some hall of fame fights. Those guys will be remembered for those fights for a long, long time. Gatti will be remembered alone for many great fights. They should make a siamese induction award, where one doesnt get in with out the other and they are both displayed on only one plaque. They could call it.... the.... i dont know....maybe... the....Rockin' Rumble Award. :)........Rockin'
Kimmy 03-24-2005, 12:42 PM ThunderGatti, there is no shame in being a Gatti fan, hell he is one fo the most exciting fighters of ALL TIME but his achivements lack any subtance. He beat who? Tracy Harris Patterson! Leornard Dorin! Comes on, his greatest fights were ones in which he lost. Ward 1, Ivan Robinson and Manfredy. Even his victories he rarely went to war in. to sum it up, highly entertaining fighter who usually wins only when he is in a fght that isn`t a war. He lost most of his fights where the entertainment value was good. How does this guy get into the hall of fame?
joeboxer 03-24-2005, 12:57 PM He deserves it just for being Irish.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 03-24-2005, 01:17 PM nope. But he is a warrior.
jpboxer3 03-24-2005, 01:47 PM Ward never won a World Title.I consider him a tough as nails journeyman though, but NO way he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.
oldgringo 03-24-2005, 01:50 PM Theres no way either of these guys belong to make it in. They are both great warriors, but their individual accomplishments are very weak.
ThunderGatti 03-24-2005, 07:13 PM This is too funny, first off Id like to remind the likes of run w/ knives and kimmy that this is a post on Mickey Ward not Arturo Gatti. So it just shows that you guys are really just Gatti bashers but its cool, everybody has their favorites to root for.
But to reply to ur comments first off Kimmy, Gatti's greatest fights were the ones he lost?? Obviously you have yet to see the Rodriguez fight or the Ruelas fight or the 3rd Ward fight, etc i could go on all day, you couldnt be more wrong in that statement.
And run w/ knives look at my other posts were i explain Gatti's game competition. I dont like repeating myself.
Gatti is too famous to be not in the Hall of Fame. That is why he will be there eventually. And I would like to see Ward there too I honestly think he deserves it, but that is just my opinion.
Sir_Jose 03-24-2005, 08:52 PM Niether deserve to get in, but both probably will considering the boxing hall of fame is a flat out joke. They let everyone in.
dustymoo 03-24-2005, 08:59 PM What a hard mutha though! Respect there! I'd deny him Hall of Fame status cos of his poor fake Irish accent gimmick!
number6 03-24-2005, 09:04 PM I don't see anything that makes me think Ward deserves to be in the hall of fame. I love him as much as the next guy, but they man was pretty much an average fighter who was insanely entertaining. His heart and toughness are greatly admired, but his body of work isn't too impressive.

Spot on.Neither has beaten many real world class fighters.
Kimmy 03-24-2005, 10:04 PM Man...this is a joke! So Thunder Gatti is making out like Because he won 2 out of three with Gatgti this qualifies Gatti as hall of fame? What bull****! IF Gatti beats Mayweather , then winner of Hatton vs Tsyzu, then i consider him hall of fame. For Thundergatti to preach pro - Gatti ranks before his beating, i mean fight with Mayweather is just plain gay. Like i said before, PROVE Gatti has a chance with a fighter of Maywearthers standing with EVIDENCE of past gories. If nt, shut up and let Mayweather put this guy in hospital!
Kimmy 03-24-2005, 10:27 PM Irish Mickey Ward??? Just cos he cuts easy and loses on points doesn`t make him Wayne McCullough!!
dustymoo 03-24-2005, 10:28 PM I didnt know that! It just sounds like a fake Irish accent to me? Which i've heard a lot of Bostoners do too. He's not Irish at all.
would feed on Calzaghe's iron rich blood.
They'll have to stop avoiding the untouchable Super-Middlewieght, soon to move to Light Heavy to clean up first.
Dr.Depravity 03-24-2005, 10:49 PM He deserves it just for being Irish.
Damn Right! Im not sure what all the judging factors are. I know in baseball there is merit to what type of person you are. If boxing HOF is the same way. Ward is all that is good in boxing. Its possible to see him in there. Plus all those fights of the year, WOW!
dustymoo 03-24-2005, 10:49 PM It's funny how we have completly oposite sides of the story on different sides of the pond. And no one REALLY knows whats the truth? But the general concencus on this side is that for Joe to fight Joppy would be a step back. He wants Tarver, or Johnson. Who was billed if you remember, to fight Calzaghe. But chose to fight a washed up, mentaly not with us, Roy Jones instead for a sack full of cash.
dustymoo 03-24-2005, 11:02 PM I agree with you there. He may be the best fighter Joe has faced. But Joe's 33. Now he needs the biggest fights possible. And that doesnt include Joppy!
dustymoo 03-24-2005, 11:13 PM No offence meant though dude! Wow! Strange that you called me Moo. Thats what everyone calls me. Cousin of the famous American Artist Kathryn Moonan. You've probably never heard of her anyway? Oh well! Cheers Mr Knives!
Sir_Jose 03-24-2005, 11:27 PM ROFL.
a "step back". Please. Do not tell me you are one of those people who has only seen Joppy lose to arguably the best fighters on earth. Because if you are:
I understand where these statements are coming from.
3-time Middleweight Champion of the World. "step back".
OMFG. He would be the best fighter Calzaghe has ever faced.
he could beat everyone Joe has beaten, on the same night.
What?
No not the 3 time Middleweight Champion of the world he is a 3 time belt holder who got his belts because Don King put him in position to get them. King never let his out from under his skirt and made zero attempts to make matches with guys like Echols, Holmes or Bradley in the 1990's.
Not only has Joppy lost to Hopkins, Tito and Taylor he was brutally ass raped each time out not even showing a sliver of being competative.
Dont forget Joppy also lost to Julio Cesar Green and got a very debatable win over Howard Eastman.
Make no mistake about it a Joppy fight would be a huge step back for Calzaghe. You could make a damn strong case Joppy is 1-4 in his last 5.
+= El Jefe=+ 03-24-2005, 11:28 PM just for his fihgts wiht Gatti
i think he does
Sir_Jose 03-24-2005, 11:35 PM He also rematched and beat green 2 times after that.
He had 2 warrants out for his arrest the night of the Hopkins fight.
There has been some speculation as to Trinidad Wrapping his hands illegally.
Taylor is just a young lion. Joppy was too old.
yes I know. Excuses Excuses. But do you think Calzaghe would beat him out right dude? honestly?
Yes your right excuses excuses.
To answer the question Calzaghe would beat Joppy with ease and I hate Joe Calzaghe with a passion. Joppy is gone and needs to hang it up before he ends up seriously hurting himself.
