i noticed the title came out wrong..i changed it..im inquiring about the story of liston using some type of substance on his gloves...is there any truth to it??

There's the testimony of his cut man Milt Bailey that a substance was put on Liston's gloves to delibrately blind Clay. That being said, there isn't any hard evidence one way or the other that it was delibrate and the testimony of others contadict Bailey. So it really comes down to who's story do you believe. We know Liston's corner was using a substance to work on Liston's shoulder between rounds so it COULD have inadvertantly gotten on his gloves. On the other hand we also know that dirty tricks in boxing are nothing new so it certainly isn't out of the realm of possibility that it was purposely put on the gloves.

in boxing there is no room for any type of tampering,if some one is caught and proven beyond a reasonable doubt that indeed some sort of monkey business was involved then the people involved should be banned from the sport,why do they do this non shalant business i do not know,and even though it back fired in listons case,i do not for one minute believe that the bear had anything to do with any sort of balony in the ali fight:boxing:

There was at least one of Liston's old opponents who came forward and said he also got something in his eyes whilst fighting Liston, his name will come to me unless someone can help. As you say no real hard proof either way though Clay certainly was effected by something in that round.

Yeah, it's just one of those things that would never hold up in a court of law. I suspect it WAS put on Liston's gloves delibrately but suspecting and KNOWING are two different things :)

To be fair to Liston even if there was something to it he wouldn't neccessary be a part of it anyway. Corner man wiping his gloves could easily juice them without Liston having a clue.

I believe Cleveland Williams and possibly someone else made these same allegations.

To me Liston using the same trick against other opponents is pretty much a myth. The fights against Machen and Williams, in which Bert Sugar claimed Liston blinded his opponents, are both on film. No sign of Machen and Williams going blind in any of the rounds.

i was watching rocky marciano documentary and his brother said walcott did the same thing to rocky so he couldnt see in the middle rounds.......i personally dont believe it his brother seems like a liar.......

Both men were cut and the substance that was used went into Marciano's eye.

I've never heard anyone else other than Rocky's brother say Walcott did it deliberately. Certainly Rocky himself never claimed that, the man was all class.

no he didnt say it was done on purpose, they just didnt say it fully in the movie so that explains that....
