Were any titles ever won on Newspaper decisions? And when did they stop being relevant?

There may have been cases of title claimants losing their "claim" due to a newspaper decision but no official world title was ever lost in that way I don't think.

As an example, Al McCoy reigned as the middleweight champion for more than 3 years and was involved in numerous fights during that time, of which he lost nearly all. McCoy however could not lose his title on a newspaper decision and kept his title despite losing fight after fight and only barely hanging on to last the distance. Eventually Mike O'Dowd knocked him out and ended his reign of error.

Newspaper decisions stopped being relevant after the 1920's.

It was an odd way of deciding things, and could often become a personallity contest.. But not a lot different to the decisions made by some of the modern day officials..

How true is that, I think i'd be happier with the majority verdict of 20 quality journalists such as Hugh McIlvanney rather than 3 WBC appointed judges who have had their mortgages paid up by Don King!

McIlvanny would be my choice to.. Head and shoulders above the rest!
