View Full Version : Best TV Shows That Were Canceled Quickly....
LuKahnLi 03-23-2005, 07:44 PM You all must remember that one show that was absolutely great. Everything you would want in a TV Show. The only trouble was you and a handful of others were the ONLY ones that watched it. This seems to happen more often than not with genre television. In some cases, it got canned due to content or some other reason.
1- GvsE - A cross between Pulp Fiction and the Excorcist. Absolutely hilarious. Cleverly written every episode was an experience. Debuted on USA was canned after its first season. Picked up by Sci-Fi channel, also got canned after its first season. Too Goddamn bad.
2- Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher - Canned by CBS due to content. Bill Maher said that he thought that Terrorists can't be called cowards because they willingly died for their cause.
3- Carnivale - I am assuming this is canceled after this season. A great show. A cross between Stephen King's The Stand and Grapes of Wrath.
4- Kindred The Embraced - Another Genre show that was on Network TV. This one about vampires. Was really good. Great storyline , characters and writing. Canceled after one of the leads died in a motorcycle accident.
5- The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr.- Great Western show. Sort of like Wild Wild West, but with Bruce Campbell.....apparently not enough people were amused by it.
neils7147933 03-23-2005, 07:57 PM Carnivale's episode next week is not being billed as a "series finale" but as a "season finale"
Don't rule out a 3rd season yet...there's plenty of ground to cover.

I hope you are right. Lodz wasn't on that show NEARLY enough. He was my favorite character.
Family Guy was cancelled after 3 seasons, I dont even think it was 3 whole seasons. I have them all on DVD but that show was to funny to go off the air.....
LuKahnLi 03-23-2005, 08:20 PM Family Guy was cancelled after 3 seasons, I dont even think it was 3 whole seasons. I have them all on DVD but that show was to funny to go off the air.....
That went off the air cuz people were offended by it.
People are to ****in sensative. If you dont like a show, turn it the **** off, change the damn channel, tons of people love that show, its one of the highest selling TV DVD's out there....

I don't think The Wire is gonna be back for another season. That is THE greatest crime drama ever.
If they did it to the Wire I have no doubt they would do it to Carnivale.
Dr.Depravity 03-23-2005, 09:00 PM Besides previously mentioned. I would add Firefly.
LuKahnLi 03-23-2005, 09:09 PM Besides previously mentioned. I would add Firefly.
Never saw it. If I recall it was like a Space Western or something. It was more recent wasn't it?
tonytucker 03-23-2005, 09:10 PM Millenium was good-it was about serial killers. Later brother brologs.
tonytucker 03-23-2005, 09:13 PM Another good one was American Gothic. Later brother brologs.
neils7147933 03-23-2005, 09:28 PM Don't forget
Police Squad
Herman's Head
Clerks: The Animated Series
oldgringo 03-23-2005, 09:28 PM I've never gotten into any other HBO shows except OZ and Six Feet Under. I think Six Feet Under is the most well acted show on TV...and the best show on TV. I always remember thinking, "whats this American Beauty made for TV crap? This is gonna suck..." but I actually like it a lot. It's just odd and passive enough to keep you interested...and the actors are all excellent.
I liked Entourage while it was on. It wasn't the most intelligent script ever but it never tried to be anything it wasn't. Plus Jeremy Piven and Kevin Dillon are hilarious and there is a lot of fine girls all of the time. I hope it doesn't get merc'd as well.
Why are they going to cancel Carnivale? I thought it was doing well...so John Connor can save the world from psychotic robots but he can't muster up a few more viewers to save his own job? Heh...
1steve2 03-23-2005, 09:36 PM I hope you are wrong about CARNIVALE!
It's my favorite show, and I just started watching it a few weeks ago.
Best thing since Twin Peaks.
joeboxer 03-23-2005, 09:38 PM Was American Gothic the show that was about vampires but it was done Godfather style all mob family vampires, that **** was awsome!!!
Also the show Skin on fox was bad ass. It only got one episode. It was a ****o style Romeo and Juliet thing.
Also there was another show, called like "Wing Commander" or something. It was a really cool sci-fi show, kind of like Stargat SG-1 but so much better.
m00ks 03-23-2005, 09:38 PM Family Guy was cancelled after 3 seasons, I dont even think it was 3 whole seasons. I have them all on DVD but that show was to funny to go off the air.....
I hear dthey were suppose to come out with new episodes in January 05 but I never seen any. Must have been delayed. And about teh offensive content, it's funny how it was so offensive it's become vastly popular purchased DVDs.
BadMagick 03-23-2005, 09:39 PM People are to ****in sensative. If you dont like a show, turn it the **** off, change the damn channel, tons of people love that show, its one of the highest selling TV DVD's out there....
You were aware that it's coming back in May, right? Not trying to be sarcastic, but you seem unaware of this.
m00ks 03-23-2005, 09:39 PM A few years ago there was a sitcom called "Working" or "Work" with Fred Savage. I thought it was pretty decent.
The Fix 03-23-2005, 10:55 PM andy richter controls the universe- was the funniest show on tv.
playmakers- i like the show, it was about football and i liked
the plots with different players from the team.
loangunZ 03-23-2005, 11:02 PM I have to go with
Freaks and Geeks - it was so funny and even has a huge cult following now
Dr.Depravity 03-23-2005, 11:45 PM Never saw it. If I recall it was like a Space Western or something. It was more recent wasn't it?
Exactly. you can get the whole season on dvd for a little over 30 bucks I think. They are having a movie about it this summer. Fox totally screwed up with that show. They aired the episodes out of order and ****.
jack_the_rippuh 03-23-2005, 11:49 PM Kindred the Embraced was good. It brings back memories.
Greg the Bunny was pretty funny too.
masterdirector 03-24-2005, 12:31 AM American Gothic!!!! For sure!
No it wasn't about vampires from Queer Eye or whatever. It had Gary Cole playing one of the best villains ever, Sheriff Lucas Buck. It was this horror-ish show set in Trinity, South Carolina. Come on, a horror show with Trinity as the name of a town, meaning religious horror and all? It is a can't miss, but CBS ****ed it up by not showing episodes in order, omitting some critical episodes, moving the time slot like crazy, etc. CBS really dropped the ball on a "should've been huge" show.
God The Devil and Bob...wasn't THAT great but I mean good enough for NBC (now especially). Animated.
Family Guy comes back in May, as does American Dad, Seth MacFarlane's new show. Only show to ever return because of fans' demand.
Just The Ten of Us is the best sitcom ever that didn't make it. Considering when it was made, the budget, and the premise, it is arguably one of the all-time best sitcoms. I have all the episodes and it is funny as hell. You expect it to be like Full House, so all gay and sappy, but it isn't really.
I just started watching Malcolm in the Middle. OMG that show is hilarious, I can't believe it. I never watched it b/c I just figured it'd suck big time.
And why buy commercial DVDs when you can just get a DVD burner really damn cheap (try $60 internal, $100 external), free software to burn DVDs online, and good quality blank DVDs on sale all the time ($20 will get you a 50 pack now)? Then just join Netflix or Blockbuster or DVDBarn or some online rental place, you have access to 30,000 different movies.
Do the math, for say $120 plus say $30 a month for 5 movies at a time, so let's say 3 months= 50 DVDs so $210 total. Versus say you found a really good deal and got all 50 dvds commercially for $5 a piece...$250. But let's be realistic and say $10, so $500. And of course the savings only continue to grow.
And Netflix has Fighting Spirit, which is a ****ing awesome boxing anime. I don't even like anime but I like this show.

watch the trailer!
You were aware that it's coming back in May, right? Not trying to be sarcastic, but you seem unaware of this.
I was unaware, I heard it was supposed to be making a comback, but then I never heard anything else...

was that the one with the bald dad who was a basketball coach?
boxing fan 03-24-2005, 08:48 AM I felt Angelina Ballerina could have gone on a while longer.
Explosivo 03-24-2005, 10:53 AM was that the one with the bald dad who was a basketball coach?
I'll answer for him. Yes, thats the show. It was a spinoff from Growing Pains. I didnt think it was very good, but I didnt think the blonde and brunette sisters (not the nerdy one with glasses) were hot. I dont see Corso's obsession with this show. IMO it wasnt that good.
A good show that was cancelled too early was "The Job". It was on ABC and it atarred Denis Leary. It also had thay guy who used to be on that show "Lenny" a long time ago. It was a cop show. Think NYPD Blue, with some good dark comedy. I thought it was great and was sorry to see it go.

I thought The Job was pretty good to and was sad to see it go. It would've been better off on HBO or Showtime so Leary could've been a little edgier. Do you remember who Leary's girlfriend was on the show?
joeboxer 03-24-2005, 01:43 PM Anybody ever see Unhappily Ever After? Oh my god, Mr. Floppy ruled!

No, but if I remember right, he was married and had a girl on the side.

Wow I thought I was the only one that watch that show Kindred The Embraced, it was awesome, I was bumed out when it was cancelled!
Politically Incorrect With Bill Maher, Kindred The Embraced , The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr., and Family Guy. I luved all of those shows!
Another one I luved but was cancelled by NBC real quick was "Earth 2" or something? I don't even think it lasted a season.
So whats the Carnivale about? I might have to go rent it, everyone seems to rave about it.

The final battle between Good and Evil is looming, and Ben Hawkins and Brother Justin are on a collision course that could determine the fate of the world, when HBO's Emmy® -winning drama series CARNIVALE returns this January. The 12-episode second season kicks off SUNDAY, JAN. 9 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT), with the episode entitled "Los Moscos," followed by other shows on subsequent Sundays at the same time.
CARNIVALE follows a traveling carnival as it wends its way across the Dust Bowl, focusing on Ben Hawkins, a mysterious 18-year-old fugitive with hidden talents who is taken in by the carnival, and Brother Justin, the charismatic, shadowy evangelist who will ultimately cross his path. The series takes place at a time of worldwide unrest, with evil on the rise around the globe and the Great Depression wreaking economic and social havoc here at home.
Among the cast regulars this season are: Nick Stahl ("In the Bedroom") as Ben Hawkins and Clancy Brown ("The Shawshank Redemption") as Brother Justin, as well as Michael J. Anderson ("Twin Peaks") as Samson, who runs the show for Management; Clea DuVall (HBO's "The Laramie Project") as Sofie, the tarot card reader; Tim DeKay ("Swordfish") as Jones, Samson's right-hand man and the rousty manager; Adrienne Barbeau ("Escape from New York") as Ruthie, the snake charmer; Debra Christofferson ("Seraglio") as Lila, the carnival's bearded lady; Brian Turk ("American Pie 2") as Gabriel, the strong man; John Carroll Lynch ("Gothika") as Varlyn Stroud, a prison inmate enlisted in Brother Justin's cause; Amy Madigan (Oscar® nominee for "Twice in a Lifetime") as Brother Justin's loyal sister Iris; John Savage ("The Deer Hunter") as Scudder, Ben's elusive father; and Ralph Waite ("The Waltons") as Rev. Balthus. The carnival's burlesque family includes emcee father Stumpy, played by Toby Huss ("King of the Hill"); mother Rita Sue, played by Cynthia Ettinger ("Thirteen"); and daughter Libby, played by Carla Gallo ("Undeclared").
Last September, CARNIVALE received five Emmys®, including: Main Title Design; Hairstyling for a Series; Costumes for a Series; Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series; and Cinematography for a Single-Camera Series.
Wrapping its first season in Nov. 2003, CARNIVALE sparked critical raves. Us Weekly called the show "positively addicting," terming it "a magical mystery tour de force," while TV Guide hailed it as "HBO's latest appointment-TV drama." The New York Times described CARNIVALE as "richly imagined," calling the show a "spooky supernatural adventure that tightly entwines magic and the mundane," and Time termed it "magical" and "spectacular."
CARNIVALE is created by Daniel Knauf; executive producers, Howard Klein and Daniel Knauf; co-executive producers, Dan Hassid, David Knoller, Dawn Prestwich & Nicole Yorkin and William Schmidt; consulting producer, Tracy Torme; consultant, John McLaughlin; producer, Bernie Caulfield.

masterdirector 03-25-2005, 01:47 PM Yeah that short haired girl was probably my favorite on VIP and I usually can't stand when a girl has short hair. Yeah I wish that show was still on, it was funny as hell to watch.
Anybody remember this HORRIBLE show called Acapulco HEAT? It was like a lower budget VIP. Seems like the girls were decent. I just remember the theme to that show, which wasn't great but it'd get stuck in your head.
masterdirector 03-25-2005, 01:56 PM Oh Just the Ten of Us...I've seen every episode in order, so I can appreciate the show a little more. I personally thought it was hilarious. The writers of it must share a similar ****ed up sense of humor like me.
Some of the show was lame, no doubt. I'm not saying I actually think Bill Kirchenbauer's stand up comedy is good (**** no, it is worse than Bob Saget by far, or that *** Joey from Full House). The kids were the ones I thought were funny. The show also has this definitely 80s timestamp on it just from the way it looks, so that makes me biased, as I ****ing love the 80s.
LuKahnLi 03-25-2005, 02:07 PM Another good one was American Gothic. Later brother brologs.
I thought this one was really good too.
Lol999 03-25-2005, 02:07 PM The PJ's with Eddie Murphy. You can't even get that **** on DVD!
Lol :D

Earth 2 was canceled because it REALLY began to suck. The first season was excellent.
SonnyG8R 03-25-2005, 02:17 PM I thought that Seinfeld spinoff "Elaine" was pretty funny, but I guess it didn't catch on with enough people.
masterdirector 03-25-2005, 02:23 PM Watching Elle was the title I think. Wasn't really a Seinfeld spinoff, maybe it would've worked if it had been. Yeah I thought it seemed decent too. Joey seems to be gaining strength.
Curb Your Enthusiasm I would classify more as a spinoff than Watching Elle.
SonnyG8R 03-25-2005, 02:27 PM Watching Elle was the title I think. Wasn't really a Seinfeld spinoff, maybe it would've worked if it had been. Yeah I thought it seemed decent too. Joey seems to be gaining strength.
Curb Your Enthusiasm I would classify more as a spinoff than Watching Elle.
Speaking of spinoffs, did anyone else watch the Happy days reunion when it came on like a month ago? I enjoyed it because I was a big Happy days fan back in the day.
Joanie was crying when they started showing scenes from Joannie loves Chachi.
masterdirector 03-25-2005, 02:41 PM I saw a little. Damn Joanie looks scary now.
you may be able to add 'Arrested Development' to this list soon.
Flat out the funniest show on TV, and it may get cancelled because the humor is very dry and Americans don't get it.

Yeah tht was a great series. I bought season one (before season two started) and lent it out to everyone I know. They all loved it and tubed in for the next season.
Then they were all pissed at me when it was cancelled. :(

Wasn't Cleavon a replacement? He wasn't the original dad...
I remember this was a interracial sitcom with the white mom and the grandma was the paper-towel-hawking commercial star in real life.
There was an episode where the Black son goes to his white step-mom and tells her that her daughter's date tries to have sex with his women - and says "they're going to knock boots - doesn't this worry you?" and the white lady's all "as long as they don't do it on the kitchen floor..."
Early 1990s kicked ass...
