Brazilians love the guy, Wanderlei and Anderson both stated in seperate interviews, with the Wanderlei one a recent interview, that they thot he was the baddest man on the planet but I checked out his fights to see what the hype was about and he lost every match I watched both new and old.
The "brutal" ko of Matt Hughes wasnt brutal to me at as as Hughes stood up the minute the ref broke it up, I seen one with Chuck Liddell whoppin his a$$ for wat seemed like the whole fight, Jake Ellenburger knocked him out cold in like 10 seconds, and lee murray caught him with a pretty sick flying knee.
I give him credit for the Carlos Newton knee that a def man could hear, I was like :scared: when I saw that

He was one of the first guys in MMA that was dangerous both standing and on the ground as well as an exciting and vicious fighter. He basically created the Chute Boxe style of full throttle aggression.
Between 1996 and 2000 he was arguably the best fighter in the world just based on his skills alone. He'd been fighting since 1993 and by the time it got to the Matsui fight his body was beginning to feel the years of punishment he'd taken. He basically grew old overnight and has gone downhill since then. His body can't handle it anymore most recently proven when he fought Gassaway, was putting a whoopin' on the guy and ended up breaking his leg when he threw a low kick.
Great fighter to watch in his prime.

Pele was like 28-3 at one time and ranked the number 1 fighter in his weight class. He won 4 or 5 8 man tournaments back under vale tudo rules in the IVC, WVC, and BVF (headbutts allowed & no gloves in the IVC & WVC). He beat Pat Miletich(number 1 fighter at the time) in the WEF also. He went down hill fast after the Kuwait mma tournament. Watch his fights prior to his Pride debut to really see him at his best.

Simply put the man was a ****ing killer back in the day, not so much anymore. He was a legit beast and a very well rounded fighter.
Times and the evolution of the sport have just caught up with him.
But he was a savage

Come on now, Pele dominated Chuck standing. He dropped him twice with two massive high kicks.

Pele was seen in his prime in a similar way that Anderson Silva is looked at right now.
