He did not expect Sanders to be as quick and strong as he is. Also Foreman made a remark while entering the ring that Wlad looked very dry which means Wlad did not prepare properly in the lockerroom.

I don't think that his defense was ever an issue because everyone was too worried about his offense, therefore they limited there offense. The McCline fight really doesn't count because he was short arming everything all night because he was so afraid of Wlad. Against Mercer, Wlad outpunched Mercer 429-124, and Mercer landed 44% of his punches. Mercer like most people Wlad fought just threw so few punches that the high connect %s didn't matter.

Wlad's defense was Wlad's offense. He never paried or slipped punches. His footwork was so-so.

He was getting owned for like 10 rounds and than mercifully knocked out. McCline that is.

Wlads problem was that he went to exchange with Sanders when he was hurt badly. He did not have any ring sense or patience. He was just a brave and dumb kid. And you know Corrie is a type of a cat that even Vitaly did not want to exchange with much.

It was the Lennox Lewis effect. Lennox used to say to fight "both" Klitschkos you have to charge at them and keep pressuring them. That philosophy doesn't work on Vitali, but it's effective on the less defensive, more offensive, younger brother Wladimir.

On Lennox's advise, Sanders repeatedly baited Wladimir in, then charged forward with his devastating straight left. No one had ever charged at Wladimir like that before. Wladimir has always been the one to dictate the fight. And since then, everyone has tried to fight him that way.

Combine that with Wladimir trying to change to Stewards American style and you have Wladimir in the position he's in now. He was too developed to try to change his style and should have just tried to incorporate more defense to the European style that got him a gold medal and the WBO belt.

.....The jury is still out on Wlad. I think he had a real hard time coping with the Sanders thing when it looked like he was the man for sure. Alot of people had no idea who Sanders was or at least what he was about before that fight. I had a buddy of mine watch that fight with me and I told him I had a bad feeling and that Sanders was the most dangerous opponent for Wlad. Hell, I know enough that when that fight was made I screamed at my computer screen for his people to hear me and change their minds on that matchup. I was scared of Sanders and nervous for Wlad the minute that fight was announced. To clear up your thinking, the Sanders fight is the only one in Which Wlad has "been gotten to" by a hard shot. In his other loses he took big shots just fine but his stamina failed him. I still think that 9/10 heavies and maybe 99% would be afraid to step in the ring with Wlad. The future will tell. I think that if Vitali faces adversity with a loss then you will see Wlad step up and really come to the front.
