View Full Version : Thoughts on "The Contender"
SacTown1 03-21-2005, 12:42 PM Call me crazy, but I think the show is getting better each week, I'm happy to see Manfredo back (he's gonna win the whole thang) & I was happy to see my main man Sergio Mora do so well in his fight vs. Turpin....
just a sidenote: we should all boycott a certain boxing "talk" website, they have an extremely HEARTLESS article at the top of their webpage this morning, I encourage everyone to read it real quick, then boycott the site forever, I almost puked when I saw how heartless the article was....

yeah, i like the contender and don't understand the hate from certain people who are supposed to be boxing fans... yet G. leon has no problem with rahman getting a title shot after beating NOBODY.
even if you dont like the contender, it's show about boxing and will help the sport, even if its minimal..... it certainly isnt going to hurt it any with all the black eyes it already has...
anybody know the reason for homeboys death
vizcaya 03-21-2005, 02:59 PM I have enjoyed the Contender. This show is very good way to show the behind the scenes of boxers. Most Professional athletes(Basketball, football, baseball,) make good money, the average person has a hard time relating to thier way of life. Boxers are guys who do not make a good money until they get well known, most have full-time jobs, and are hoping that Boxing will get them out of the situation they are in, and a better life. The Contender is trying to shed light on that side of the sport. I think its a great show.
I would have never had Manfredo come back though.

Good point on Manfredo, why bring back they guy who's the biggest threat? Makes no sense 2 me... I would have brought Reid back to see him take another whuppin' (Didn't William Joppy kick his a$$ a few years ago on the Trinidad-Vargas undercard?)

yea, bringing back peter was stupid... ideally you would want to bring back the weakest, but these guys arent brain surgeons... i think they brought back peter cause he was well liked and they really felt bad for him after he lost....
!!!!!!!!!!!SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!
don't read if you dont want to know
it will come back to haunt them, as peter is rumored to be in the finals....
he killed himself
oh **** word?
man that sounds like a straight up publicity stunt for the show to get more ratings

I'm as big a boxing fan as anybody else here but I just can't watch that show. I don't think it's going to help the sport but I also don't think it's going to hurt the sport.

i can understand not liking the show, but some people are just HATING on it... there's no way its going to hurt boxing any and i think it helps it by showing that boxing isn't all money grubbers(king) or crazies(tyson)

That's true but how many people that don't watch boxing but watch The Contender do you think are actually going to become real fans of the sport?
SonnyG8R 03-22-2005, 10:43 AM The Irony is that the guy who killed himself has probably set his daughter up financially in death, in a way he may never have been able to in life. I bet that little girl makes a fortune from the trust fund being set up for her by the contender people and all of the donations from viewers.
bigdlb12 03-22-2005, 10:56 AM I just found out that my wife cousin is Juan's Best friend from the East, juan is from San Benito TX, I met him last weekend

yeah, he will have accomplished what he wanted, securing a better life for his daughter, sadly he won't be there to share it...
