When you spar or fight in the ring, do you follow traditional boxing methods: jab with the left (though I see right handers jab with a right), 45 degree angle, chin down, look straight, hands up, legs spread apart, etc. or you simply go your own way sometimes, and JUST FIGHT!? The way you used to fight in school, just swing with those fists, and not worry about getting technical?

My trainer kept yelling at me for going out of that traditional methods and I simply just fight. Would you call this "Unorthodox" method?

I notice Prince Naseem Hamed can switch to either his left or right positions.

It's kinda hard to remember to get in traditional/standard position when an opponent attacks you from all angles and all you can think of and do is simply JUST FIGHT BACK!

I guess this is when the dog fight comes...

That is not even considered unorthodox. In boxing fighters put their ow spin on things, but are still grounded in proper technique. If your not willing to re-train your muscles to follow certain patterns and learn the foundation and basics first, no coach is going to waste his time on you. If you have this attitude that it is just natural to do what your body tells you, than you're probably in the wrong sport.

The reason the coach gets made is becasue anyone can go in there and 'just fight' and swing wild. His job is to teach people to actually box using the 'traditional boxing methods' you mentioned. If he spends a bunch of his time teaching you how to box but when you go in the ring it all goes out the window he's wasting his time.

That said, sometimes just fighting is what you need to do like when you are matched up against a guy who is more skilled than you. You're not going to beat him with technique so you just need to make it rough and ugly. But that's only in an actual boxing match, in sparring you should be using your skills.

Of course man... I bet u fight like a backyard bum!

When I first started I didn't know how to fight for ****. During routine sparring sessions I would start out orthodox then go southpaw... after a while orthodox just became normal to me...

Im sure the same will happen to you. Just keep internalizing it. If at some point u realize your just flailing away, then just take a step back, regroup, and get back in there.

Just work on fighting how they're teaching u to fight, or else.... get the fucc outta the boxing gym cause u belong in mma with all those other homos that don't throw proper jabs or right crosses.

If you fight like how you would fight ''on the streets'', that's not unorthodox and your trainer has every right yelling at you.

Learn the basics first, it sounds cliche because it is the truth. Then as someone said you put your own spin on things but you need that boxing foundation to start off with. Then you can tweak things to your preference.

Going in swinging you're going to get timed and punched.

What he said^

Input a base into your fighting, then work off of it.

Never do anything untraditionally.

Unless it's that thing you would do with a lady friend.

I think a smart and skilled boxer will still beat the **** out of anyone that steps into the ring and starts swinging like a gorilla.

If you want to box, learn the skills needed to do so and box (train).

If you want to fight, hit the streets.

Or just enter the MMA.

Recently they just let anyone off the street enter.

Lol, so boxers are born into boxing cribs?

Kimbo [is a joke] is someone with strength and power which he uses to overcome his enemies which work against some [cans]. He has shown a desire to get better though, so he's trying to learn. Being in the MMA game doesn't mean your good, decent, or anything really. You win or lose, thats it. Your record is dictated for the most part [can be built up as in boxing] by your skill and ability. If he loses he won't be in a major organization, if he wins they will keep him.

boxing is great for the street, the refles and power are automatic. and you wont tire like the other guy. if you are worried about being taken down, just practise with a friend trying to defend takedowns. if you have too, bite the hell out of them and gouge the eyes. of course he might reciprocate. most times fights are determined in one minute or less anyway especially against a novice
