View Full Version : Tips on building credit????
spinksjinx 11-23-2004, 01:17 PM I am at the bottom of the rung for credit, College student with no bills and no credit history.....
I have applied for numerous store credit cards and still have received denial....
A secured credit card isnt something I am looking forward into doing as I am not paying a ridiculous sign up fee and then put my own money onto the card and have them put interest onto the money I put in....
Anyone have any credit building tips??? :D
bigdlb12 11-23-2004, 01:25 PM Jewelry store credit cards are pretty easy to get, have you try one of them, once you get that then you start getting better ones in the mail, once Visa or MasterCard sends you one of theirs, only keep that one, the interest will be sky high but only use it when you have to. After you have that for about 1 or 2 years go to your bank and get one through them. Then it will all be better, oh yeah and dont be late on a payment. Other stores will send you crap put only keep the main one.
for this info good karma would be a good idea **HINT**

I actually tried a jewelry store card and still got denied, it says "lack of credit history"
So I dont see how I am supposed to build credit when I cant get any credit!
*argh*
Also I am all karma'd out, I have to spread it around before I can give it to you again...But soon as an opening opens up you will get it!

Do you have a savings/checking account? That is a start. It also helps to have a job, even if it is part time. I was once in your position and no one would give me a card until I got a job. To this day, my credit is excellent (I missed one payment back in 1996 and that is the only thing I have bad on my report.)I got an awesome mortgage rate and, to the point of annoyance, I am getting calls and letters offering me credit cards. A word of advice my friend, if you do get a credit card, pay it off right away. It is not just late fees and interest. Missed payments will hurt you in the long run.

The1God 11-23-2004, 01:51 PM If you can get a co-signer, if not, purchase a car or something like that. If you are in the USA, contact US Bank or Citibank via telephone and explain your delema. They will usually start you off with a card with a $400 limit and increase it quarterly. My first job out of college was a very high paying one and I got an American Express right away do to my income. Still have it too!

I dont know if they have a bank of america were you are but they ask for a 530 credit score to open an account, I build mine up they way I was telling you, on my house payment I got interest of only 4.5% which I think was very good. my house is right under 100k and I only pay 814.00 a month with insurance and house payment
spinksjinx 11-23-2004, 02:00 PM See I had just purchased a car back in march, It costed 5000 and I paid it off within a month...It is on my credit report but didnt give me any credit because I paid it off with quickness and their was no longevity of payments.....

and believe it or not, it is harder to get a car than a house. if you would have paid on it for about 6 mos, it would of helped
Xecutioner 11-23-2004, 02:30 PM its difficult, the only way you can really build credit is by using shyt like credit cards, paying off car bills etc. just show you can pay shyt off over long periods of time

m00ks 11-23-2004, 05:12 PM Get billed monthly by anything. Cell phone, gym, everything helps. Or you can try getting cards form department stores or others who give out their own credit. That also helps and is much easier to be approved than visa or mastercard. THEN you can make a demand for a mainstream credit card. Or you can ask your parents to co-sign. If you show good enough history you can open your own account. but normally they should approve you if you have a prt-time job. It shouldnt be that hard to get credit. If you have money in your account, it shoudl all go smoothly. If not you can talk to a banker, and they'll help you out. Unless they see a reason why you SHOULN'T be approve, ther wouldn't be a problem.
