View Full Version : I'm fighting in the 2010 NJ Golden Gloves

I always said I wanted to do it and always had an excuse why not. This time I'm for real. I have a little weight to take off and training for a tournament would give me great incentive to get back in shape and to maintain my overall health.

I'm training at the Bergen County PAL with Frank Toledo Sr., father/trainer of former featherweight champion Frank Toledo Jr. Shaun George and lightweight prospect Danny McDermott are gonna help me get some things down as well once I start sparring in a couple of weeks.

I'm gonna fight probably at 152 but if I can get there and still take off some weight in a healthy way, I'll go to 141. Pretty much I just need to get in shape, that's the biggest part. I did a short 2 mile run today and did some preliminary training to get my overall fitness back together. I'm going to start sparring in about two weeks or so.

I been fighting at 147 for a while now, i have lost only once.

And in AM boxing this is my advice jab move jab move jab move, right hand move, jab move, jab move... etc... if one of those stunts him go after him.

Judges in the Amateurs look for that more than anything else.

Just my 2cents good luck mate its a great experience

I figure it'll all be about just getting in great shape and turning and spinning after I'm done and just keeping my hands moving. I've been doing lots of running and crazy stamina drills with a mean taskmaster kind of guy lol.

It's the novice class, there's no way I'm going to get KO'ed like that lol. Maybe in the open class where it's a lot more dangerous but I'm very confident that the right training will protect me.

Day two of training was pretty tiring. It's not often that I'm exhausted before I hit the bag. I did 15 minutes of jumping rope to warm up, the two rounds of shadowboxing with five pound weights and two without. Then I hit the bag for three rounds and kept my punch count high. Then I did a round on the double end bag.

It's very hard to think when you're tired BTW, I want to put my punches together in combinations and they just don't come together when I'm tired.

I finished off with two rounds of jumping on a tire and a bunch of ab work.

I'm back in the gym tomorrow at 10AM. I've been doing roadwork by myself but 8-1 prospect Danny McDermott is going to start running with me on Monday.

first fight its a whole different experience men... you get tired just by standing in there because your heart will be racing ... ( at least mine was, haha it was crowded )

So as soon as the bell sounds try to throw the first punch, that will free your soul hahahaha And another golden rule if you get tired or something dont just cover and turn into a shell, referees in the amateurs stop the fights FAST.

Every time i fight somebody that curls and covers, i know its over, just let your hands go.

There's lots of sparring in my gym so I know I'll be able to get it together before that. Off the top of my head, there is IBF #10 flyweight Carlos Tamara, probably the slickest guy in the gym. There is unbeaten featherweight prospect Carlos Zambrano, #1 JO amateur at 112 in the country Julian Rodriguez, so many guys at or around my size I could work with. If I can do well with them in sparring, the fights shouldn't be an issue.

Sparring and fighting are a lot more different than people think lol. Just because you do good in sparring doesn't mean you will perform well in a fight. You'll see what I mean when you get in there.

It's not always good to spar pros and experienced guys neither. You need to get in there with some kids in your weight class around your experience level too.

152 seems too heavy for someone who's about 5'6". You should definitely try to get down to 141 instead, Good Luck, Pinoy-Yank. :fing02:

Yeah, true. Right now I'm trying to get into shape and get used to seeing punches coming at me and reacting. I've sparred maybe once in the last year so it's going to be tough in the early going. I figure the confidence will come from using the big gloves in sparring and the smaller ones in the ring. I probably won't put a pair of 10 ozs on until fight night.

I'm going to try and take a fight in January or February before the tournament to get some work in before.

I weighed myself today at 180 with full clothes, shoes and pockets with my wallet and phone in there and a big belt buckle. I'd say that'd put me in the high 160s or so. By March I should be 141 no problem now looking at my progress. I took off ten pounds in two weeks.

I hurt my left shoulder today, I seem to do it fairly often for some reason. Never have had a problem with my right. Coach said it's because I haven't trained like this before and it'll stop being a problem with time.

Still, I was pretty limited on the bag and had a hard time bringing my left back after I jabbed. My left hook was pretty much in the holster the whole time except for a few occasions. I jumped around to different bags to see what felt better, I settled on a softer bag.

I could only complete half of the throwing punches with five pound weights/alternating jumping jacks drill today, I felt like my arm was going to fall off. Thank God I have tomorrow off. Going to run and then rest tomorrow.

Don't throw with the weights (especially 5 lb). It'll **** up and stretch your tendons, and cause lower back probs. Caused me a lot of probs with the back last year before I figured out what it was, thru a sports doc, and eventually down time with physical therapist getting it sorted.

Yeah, i fought in the GG over here in Northern Cali. I wasn't fully prepared, i only had like 3 or 4 fights under my belt and i just joined a new camp. I lost my first fight. I wouldn't say i got whooped on. I only lost by 10 points or so. Next year ima take it. I want it.

I had a friend who had a nagging shoulder problem and he kept sayin' the same thing, that it was nothing, but, one day it finally gave out during a tournament.

He got it checked out the next day and I don't know if it was an MRI or an X-ray or both, but they found out that he had ligament tears on 'em. So, that nagging pain or discomfort may lead to something more serious, it doesn't hurt to get it checked out. Better now than later.

If there really is something wrong, it is better to get minor treatment now, than having it become serious and you end up needing surgery and having to go through rehab, which will definitely push your "comeback plans" even farther.

Oh, and you mentioned that you're 180lbs. How tall are you?

BTW, Any news coming out of the PAC - Cotto camps? Are there really some friction between Roach and PAC or is it between Roach and Koncz ?

I had my first sparring session yesterday in about ten months, did four rounds with a muay thai fighter that does boxing on the side. It was light work, I didn't put my punches together really, just worked on defense and getting counter-punching angles.

My timing was a little off, I was short with my counters at times because my feet were in the defensive L position just trying to make him miss. I threw maybe one hard shot in the second, I threw three hard jabs and when he covered up I slipped to the left and hit him with a flush hook. After that I just went defensive.

I'm hoping to get more sparring next week.

record that **** yo....

I'm going to record the next one for sure lol, I watched it on the gym surveillance cameras and was like wow, I look like James Toney with as lazy as I was.

I'm going to pick up my cardio and start pushing myself against bigger opponents that I can hit so I don't remain complacent as much.

The most important thing is for me to start throwing more hard jabs. When I throw the soft jab I don't really get as many openings.

Mr. Ryan
10-28-2009, 02:04 AM
Just had a refresher course on what it's like to get hit hard again lol. I did three rounds today with an open class 145 pounder that has a fight on Friday. It was my first serious session in a long time so I was a little tight but by the second round I was popping my jab in his face with regularity. It was actually enough to keep him off of me but I just couldn't keep it up consistently cuz I'm not in shape yet.

I was surprised how easy I could hit him with my right hand and jab and pretty much every time I tried to counter him. I think if I'm in shape I'm the better fighter.

He was putting a lot of pressure on me and I just saw that my only shot was to flurry off the ropes. I'd beat him with the first punch but then he'd come back and I just couldn't keep up with the pace. My best moment was in the second when he came in on me in the ropes and I just opened up a big flurry of 8-9 punches and moved.

At the end of the second he hit me after the bell because I was holding so I retaliated by cracking him with a right in the back of the head when he turned away. Both corners came in but I knew I couldn't let him just hit me like that.

The third round was all him, I still caught him with everything I threw but I was just moving on my heels trying to buy time. Took a lot of shots on the ropes but blocked a lot too.

My trainer, who had never seen me spar before, said he was impressed because I could fight but just wasn't in any kind of shape. I spar tomorrow in the Four Corners of Death, which is one guy to a corner trying to knock each other's heads off. Awesome.

Mr. Ryan
10-28-2009, 10:28 PM
Man, another day of hard sparring! We did the Four Corners of Death, with four guys, one in each corner, taking turns beating each other up. I started out sparring a huge 178 pound open class guy and started fast, throwing my jab and getting in close and doubling up hooks up top and to the body. He caught me with a left hook when I dropped my right glove and I was like "WOO!!" lol, that was hard.

Then I got a break and when I went back in I sparred the guy from yesterday and I gave him the business this time. He was more aggressive but I pretty much just circled to my left and popped him with the jab whenever he tried to come in close. I countered him pretty easily since I figured him out already.

I then went in with this tall rangy guy who was the weirdest of them all. He gave everyone problems with how awkward his style was, he would kinda box and throw softer punches then when you stepped in to counter he'd counter you hard. I slipped his jab and cracked him with a right and when he went to the ropes I forced him to his left and hit the right side of his body so hard with a hook you could hear it through the gym. He went down and then I went right back in with the big guy. By this time I was dead tired and he whooped the crap out of me lol.

I only had energy to jump in with a jab to the body every so often and caught him with a few straight rights but whenever I stopped he would just pound me.

I know I have to just get into shape. All of these guys are in great shape and have a lot of fights and I can hang with them, I just need the conditioning.
