View Full Version : Rate Your Boxing Knowledge 1-10
oldgringo 03-18-2005, 12:44 PM I know a lot of people on this site like to think they know everything about boxing and pass their opinions off like it was fact. There are a few people who can use factual evidence and actual events to back up what they say. How do you rate your boxing knowledge? Don't be modest...
Based on knowledge of fights, knowledge of fighters, ability to use logic when determining a potential matchup, ability to be objective when debating the outcome of the fight, knowledge of the rules of boxing and its politics...things like that.
I'd give myself a 6 personally. I'm still pretty young and don't know a lot of stuff that deals with older fighters and boxing ins/outs. 1 is the lowest, 10 is the highest...
elveiel 03-18-2005, 12:51 PM General boxing knowledge is 10, theres stuff i dont know but thats stuff i dont need to know, or because i too young to remember.
Oldringo, your knowledge is better than 6
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 03-18-2005, 01:02 PM I have been a fan for a while but boxing and its history is so vast and there are so many divisions, i would rate my knowledege a 5.
m00ks 03-18-2005, 01:07 PM Ah man boxing has a LOOOOOONG history, I've only scratched the surface. 3 for me
Explosivo 03-18-2005, 01:10 PM I would give myself a 5. I have been watching boxing for about 15 years so I dont know all that much about the old guys. I also tend to only watch or pay attention to big fights, like things on HBO, Showtime or PPV. I watch run of the mill boxing whenever I see that it's on, but my life doesnt revolve around it by anymeans. As for big fights, I make sure I have my ass at home to watch those.
Mr. Beelzebub 03-18-2005, 01:22 PM I give myself a 9.5 in looks... I am one sexy mofo.
joeboxer 03-18-2005, 01:29 PM I'd give Nuraxsis a ten.
Rockin probably gets one too.
Rick Reeno obviously.
Anybody who thinks Trinidad can beat Hopkins, Mike Tyson will be a champ again, or Arturo Gatti can beat Mayweather, gets **** loads of fan points, but an automatic 0 on boxing knowledge.
I am talking to you deuskie, and Mike Tyson Jr.
oldgringo 03-18-2005, 01:35 PM The only person I'd say that is close to a ten is CPLE. Dude knows a lot about history and can cite all sorts of examples and ****. He'll talk about ALL weight classes and doesnt just focus on certain things. It's a shame he doesnt post more often. Drop some knowledge on the youngsters.
dodge 03-18-2005, 01:39 PM bout a 4 for me.
joeboxer 03-18-2005, 01:42 PM bout a 4 for me.

m00ks 03-18-2005, 02:57 PM If Jack wants to be precise, I'm actually I'm a PI.

Atwa_66 03-18-2005, 03:40 PM I'm really young, and I won't lie, I don't know too much about past fights. I know alot about current fighters, and I know alot about boxing as a fighter, But the whole history I'm not good on. I know big things and big fighters, But not alot about the history. 3 here
dodge 03-18-2005, 04:36 PM agreed. Good self-evaluation.
Kiss my Ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!buddy :)
joeboxer 03-18-2005, 04:51 PM Kiss my Ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!buddy :)
What. Did you think you were being humble? Did you want someone to come out and say oh Dodge, how could you give yourself a 4, you are soooo smart with your little one sentance posts. I think you deserve a ten!
If you don't agree with me, agreeing with you, then you need to think about what a bull**** post you put up in the first place.
Oh and by the way,
Joeboxer ko in 2.
dodge 03-18-2005, 05:03 PM YEA YEA YEA YEA That hurts.

Atwa is the smartest poster on here. No doubt about it.
PessimisticPug 03-18-2005, 05:21 PM I'd give Nuraxsis a ten.
Rockin probably gets one too.
Rick Reeno obviously.
Damn Joe Boxer, thanks. You put me in some very good company there.
My boxing knowledge is good. Me and Bill Miller talk alot at the gym and he claims that I am a historian. He can talk to me about back in his day and I know exactly who he is talking about and what fights came off with that fighter. We have a game where he will name a fighter and I will have to tell him what weight he fought in. Ofcourse anybody that was pretty good back then I can talk a bit about but Bill had been in the game for like 75 years and he just knows alot of fighters that I have never heard of.
I think where I stand tall is on actuall fight topics. Actual tactical, throwing down topics that can only be known if you've been in there throwin'the punches and excepting the punches. Exchanged blows with alot of very good boxers and that helps alot.
The back side of the game is what people dont really know about. Thats what gives me a prespective that others may not have.
Bill Miller is a 10 on the boxing knowledge scale.
Rockin' is a 7 or an 8 next to him.
There are some on this board who are 8's and maybe even 9's but for the most part they can not compare with the knowledge of Bill Miller.......................Rockin'
dodge 03-18-2005, 05:21 PM Bow down joe boxer. :friday:

Boxing historians are great and all, but the experience of being a pro has got to be worth more. Jack London and Ernest Heminway wrote about boxing all the time, even though they were amazing authors their descriptions of boxing were ameteur at best. That is probably because that was all they ever were.
I don't care if you can tell me the first time Sugar Ray got knocked down, I'm much more interested in what its like to see blood on the mat and wonder if its his or yours.
PessimisticPug 03-18-2005, 05:31 PM Alright Joe Boxer/Dodge.... I want a good clean fight here, see..... no hitting below the belt and no calling some ones mom a *****..... in the case of a knock down, you will go to the neutral corner and await instruction to come out...... in the case of a foul ending this match, the one who perpetrated the foul will be disqualified......... now touch gloves and lets give 'em a good clean debate................DING!!!!!!....... :boxing: Rockin'
joeboxer 03-18-2005, 05:34 PM It was over as soon as Dodge started posting.
PessimisticPug 03-18-2005, 05:35 PM I have started writing a book about my experiences. I bought a lap top and have been writing and saving for the last 3 or 4 years. I do agree that the authors that you mentioned were great writers, but they did not know what it was like to come back into the conscious world and still be fighting a guy, wondering what round it was or even if I went down. I give that in my writing and more. I hope one day to finish it and get it out there. In time maybe.............Rockin'

I have a little tip for you. I'm sure your book will be great and all but if you want it to sell just put in a chapter about shooting steroids into Mike Tyson's ass cheek. It worked great for Jose Conseco and I'm sure it would work for you too.

Basing it on that critera, I'd not feel comfortable rating myself higher than 5, and that may be pushing it. I've not been following the sport long enough to know it all (does anybody ever really know it all?? ) but do think I've learned quite a lot in the time I've been a fan. Thats the main reason I come to this site...to learn what I can from fellow fans, and to share opinions and views with them. Learn something new all the time ;)
Okay, after reading everybodys posts on this thread, maybe I will drop my score down to 4?? :D

Hitman pic? the last avatar I used was a pic of me, and I prefer to kill for free, thank you! :D

joeboxer 03-18-2005, 06:22 PM :gay: .........
Thank you for pointing that out. I think I will just move to San Fransico and start taking it up the ass now because your smiley was so intelligent. You aren't related to Dr. Phil are you? I really wish you could have gotten to me earlier because then I maybe my teenage years would have been easier.
PessimisticPug 03-18-2005, 06:43 PM whats gay about taking a picture from an artists site. I cant see whats wrong with that at all.
Now, if he had taken the picture and then taken it up the ass from the artist that would be gay, most definately. But he didnt and the only thing gay was your reply to his post Dodge, get off it man and lets save space for some good boxing talk........Rockin'
julDilla 03-18-2005, 06:49 PM hmmm rate it you say .... 04/10 :o
oldgringo 03-18-2005, 07:16 PM I've learned a lot from this site too. I think this is the best way to get information...from interacting with other people.
Rockin...I think you should do make a sticky thread with some of your experiences in and out of the ring...kind of like Soundtraveler did a "journey with the Soundtraveler" thread in which he posted pics from his announcing trips. It would be interestin and original. Just a thought...

julDilla 03-18-2005, 07:23 PM Thank you for thinking it would be interesting. What is a sticky thread and what does it do?........Rockin'
it keeps the thread on top of the forum
oldgringo 03-18-2005, 07:26 PM Thank you for thinking it would be interesting. What is a sticky thread and what does it do?........Rockin'
It just makes it easier for the thread to be viewed and for you to update it. It keeps the thread at the top of the page...like p4p already stated.
PessimisticPug 03-18-2005, 07:33 PM wouldnt that piss people off, always having to look at it atop the forum if they didnt like it or care about it?.......Rockin'

I doubt it, and even if it did, who cares what pisses some of them off? Let them get pissed (dont think they would) I think there would be more people interested in reading it, and grateful for not having to look it up, then people that would be pissed. If they dont want to read it they can just avoid the thread..no big deal. ;)
Sweat 03-19-2005, 12:14 PM Wow... im surprised how low u rate yourselves.. Well im still too young and im a freshman in boxing.. I would rate me a 2 1/2

neils7147933 03-19-2005, 07:35 PM Probably a 2 or 3
Boxing's not something you can just pick up and totally understand, between the rules, the politics, the history -
other than a Tyson or Holyfield fight here and there, I didn't watch boxing until 2003...
kepsy 03-19-2005, 08:23 PM wouldnt that piss people off, always having to look at it atop the forum if they didnt like it or care about it?.......Rockin'
You started writing about your start in boxing back in the old forums and never continued it.... maybe you should pick up on where you left off. Screw it if a sticky pisses someone off. They always have the option of not going in the thread and ignoring it altogether.
PessimisticPug 03-19-2005, 08:43 PM I cant find the thread. I was writting it from the top of my head and, well, never saved it. i asked rick if he could find it for me so I could continue with the story. he said that he would look for it but I assume that he was not able to find it. It makes me feel good that you read it and remembered the story. Thank you ..............Rockin'
tntkid 03-19-2005, 09:30 PM I would say about 6 or 7 for me, I've been watching boxing for 20 yrs now.

Well, it was from the old forums. You built up the first fight with the bully and left us hanging man... that's why I remembered it. You can damn well write too so it was a good read. You should save this **** down and make a book someday... maybe they would even make a movie if the writing was good... "Million Dollar Rockin". I get royalty fees for that title if they ever use it... lol.

Well this is a good place to learn (along with magazines and tv, etc.) so welcome to the site! :)
PessimisticPug 03-20-2005, 02:39 PM ya, i built that story up pretty good, I am glad that you liked it. I did write another part to it but people were just *****ing about getting to the good part, where I fight that kid with braces. I was telling a story, and I guess that I wanted to tell it my way, not theirs. So I deleted the additional writing that I had done and said to hell with it. I had written something that I called "A Dance With the Devil". Thats the one that I am looking for. If anybody happened to print it or save it I would really like to know..............Rockin'
Chups 03-20-2005, 05:15 PM My boxing knowledge is 1 but my trashtalking and insult knowledge is a 9, which makes me compatible with boxing forums. :D
.::EnRiQuE::. 03-20-2005, 05:39 PM because i box i would have to give my self a 5, but im not sure how accurate that is
Fallout 03-20-2005, 06:27 PM There are different areas of knowlage. There are people that could tell you how many punchs Ali threw in the first round against Liston but wouldn't be able to tell you how to throw a jab.
When it comes to knowing the boxers, I am alright I guess. I know who the top guys in each weight class are. I might not be able to name them on my own but if I heard their name I would know who they were.
My knowlage about how powerful punch was or how close a guy is to going is my strong point I belive. In other words I would be an excellent judge but a ****ty colour man.

masterdirector 03-20-2005, 11:41 PM I'm on up there. I'd say 8. I suck at dates, so I have to look those up a lot. But I am one of the few who strives to back up most of what I say with facts.
Boxing history? Yeah, I'm not great in that. But, it is there in books and on the Internet any time I get ready to go research it. One day, I'll know a lot. My potiential is great.
My IQ is in the 160s. So that has got to put me high for one of the smarter posters on the site. Or at least, capable of being smart. Yeah.
