Got myself a heavybag, looking for some tips.

I weigh 275lbs, fairly solid body (not very fit, bout 23-24% BF), have 19 inch arms and a 54 inch chest. How do you recommend I build my strength up?

hit the bag with hard combos,you say you have a lot of fat so you probably will start off hitting the bag like a big lug throwing wild haymakers with your hands open and basically slapping the bag and scraping the skin off your knuckles,do not throw these haymakers you will dislocate your shoulder,start of slow,jab,jab,right hand:boxing:

Wow, that's really short, how tall are you

I measured my arm length yesterday and my arms were 24" armpit to end of fist

Anyway your bf is pretty high. Forget about the heavybag, unless you know how to use it properly you are just going to wail on it and probably hurt your hands. Forget about building lots of strength too for the time being, you need to lose some weight. Start with jogging 20 minutes in the mornings before you eat anything (burns fat and boost your metabolism) when you can, increase the time to 30 or even 40 minutes. Cut out all the **** out of your diet, (full fat dairy, chips, chocolate, lollies, pizza, maccas etc etc etc)
and eat six small meals per day of good foods like reduced fat dairy, fruit, lean meats, wholegrain breads, unsalted nuts etc. In the evenings or after your runs (depending on what suits you) do as many pushups as you can in sets of 10 or 20 (im assuming they will be diffuclt for you because of your size) and as many crunches/situps as you can in sets of 10 or 20.

Really losing weight is not hard at all. All it is is getting motviated to exercise and being able to deny yourself fatty and sugary foods. Might be hard at first but if you really want it, it's easy.

Wow! 275 pounds and only 19" arm reach?...

either ur short and fat....

Or u just have t-rex like arms.

Either way, I know u wanna have a go at that heavy bag. But first and foremost, lose weight!

But ur probably not gonna listen. If u don't have anyone to show u proper technique then go on youtube and look up some boxing technique videos and try it out on ur bag.

BUT PLEASE!!!! RUN!!!!!!!!!

Don't be a fat ass!!!

Jump rope and run, a lot. you have about 50 pounds to lose

Criminally wrong answer .
Never jump the rope , it will destroy your cartilage , never run either.
Walk long distances , and if and after you manage to lose at least 40 lbs , then you can consider walking long distances with added weight on your back. Never run or jump unless an immediate life threatening danger occurred .

I think you need conditioning man .Best way to lose weight.The safest is clean diet exercise and plenty of water .This book is quality .If your only looking to lose some weight and ain't competing then you might even find you don't need to run as I found out when I bought this book.

Reach is typically measured from the tips of the fingers to the tips of the other set of fingers. 19 inches seems really short for an arm... are you sure you measured right?

For the 3rd time he's talking circumference not length.

You should start by walking and swimming, and sort your diet out.

What do you mean bu "increasing strength" what are your goals?

lifting heavy free weights is the most effective form of burning calories. it also produces a hormonal response, increasing testosterone levels - especially in the squat.

long duration cardio work is NOT the best way to burn fat, although if combined with strength training, it can be very helpful.

if you want to get into boxing, get into it.

if you want to lose fat, and get stronger - lift weights.

BTW I am 5'11 on my bare feet, 6' with my shoes.

BTW Heres a pic

http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/6087/file00172.jpg (http://img695.imageshack.us/i/file00172.jpg/)

It's weird, my arms are lean, my shoulders are but my chest as a bit of fat. I am just making comparison, but I notice big heavyweights like Tyson, Tua, Bowe, Foreman, they all go 280+ when they stop working out. For example Tyson went up to 280 in prison Foreman 315 during his lay off. Tua was just below 300 on his lay off and when Bowe came back (he shouldn't have) I assume he had to lose at least 20lbs to come in at 280. When Ali went away to Egypt after winning the title in 64 he came back at 245 lbs, he was 265lbs before Larry Holmes.

Obviously these examples are the well known creme of the crop, but what I am saying is the tendency is there in big men to gain weight :D Bloody bantamweight/welterweights/middleweights always stay the same, us big men get a bit heavy when not working out :P

Week 1 Interval Training Program

* 5 Min Warm up
* 6 Sprint Intervals - 30 Seconds each
* 6 Rest Intervals - 90 Seconds each
* 5 Min Warm Down
* Do the routine 3 times in the week with a rest day in between each workout

Tips: As this is your first workout just test yourself out, instead of trying to hit 9's or 10's in intensity. There will be plenty of time for that.

NB: You are just trying to get your body used to the intervals, do not go all out, ease into the exercise.

I would be glad to offer opinions and suggestions where and when I can. Please feel to correct me if you think this is wrong for a beginner.

walk alot, like hours.

jog alittle too if you want but walk or ride bike at a relaxed pace alot.

you jog and you lose carbs and rely on a calorie deficit to lose fat where as when your doing anything that requires energy but dosnt get your heart rate up your burning the actual fat right off your body as an energy source.

this is also why boxers can gain weight and burn it off right away, because they have a massive foundation and alot of what they do dosnt really ramp up their heart rate so alot of what they do burns straight fat.

this also explains why alot of the older boxers that fought for 20+ rounds dont appear to be the most cut, because they stored some fat, not only for momentive punch purposes but as an energy source as well.
