View Full Version : Arum "Hispanic Fans Say Oscar Quit"

Former Top Rank head Bob Arum stated to writer Dan Rafael of USA Today that most Hispanic fans feel that Oscar De La Hoya quit in his last fight against Bernard Hopkins. He went to further state that the only reason De La Hoya bolted from Top Rank to join up with Hopkins is because Arum wouldn't agree to anymore big money guarantees on De La Hoya's future fights, particularly pointing out the guaranteed $25 million Oscar got for his bout with Hopkins. Hispanic fans are not the only ones saying that, Now that Oscar broke off from Arum he will probably talk all kinds of guff about Oscar to try and destroy his marquee name....

Arum sounds sour, A few months ago heck even days ago Arum wouldnt whisper one negative thing about Oscar because that was his biggest meal ticket...

Arum is just sour.

That's what happens when you cross a big boxing promoter, man: they badmouth and discredit you. Remember that Oscar is now the competition with his own reputable promotions company.

I'm not a big Oscar fan but I respect what he's done outside the ring. Of course those threatened by him are going to lash out.

Oscar didn't quit because he wanted, he quit because hopkins made him quit, just like a few other fighters whom have got hit with that type of shot to the body....I think that Arum is just trying to shed some bad publicity on the De La Hoya/Hopkins joint venture...

Why shouldnt he????

On paper, Golden Boy will destroy the other big promoters especially since hopkins and de la hoya are more respected inside and outside the community and up and coming fighters can relate to both especially Hopkins while from a business standpoint they can relate to Oscar...Great move on each others behalfs.....

If Golden Boy can sign some heavyweights then that would put an end to the king era, as it seems Oscar is brushing arum away with quickness, Arum promotes a lot of little guys and latinos and thats what oscar is going after...

Arum is a west coast promoter-Oscar De la hoya is as well
King is a east coast promoter-Bernard Hopkins is as well

Who do you think majority will flock to????

because Don King is getting old and many of his events have

I think that eventually golden boy productions will take over, become uneventful and controversail...And of cours Arum is going to hate because he stands to lose a lot of money due to the teaming up between hopkins and de la hoya

cotto is an excellent fighter, but i doubt he'll ever be as big as oscar or tito because he doesnt play up his heritage the same way they do. hes also very quiet. he just goes in there and handles his business in the ring, i respect cotto a lot.

I think it's good for boxing to have two guys who actually were fighters and know the ins and outs of the professional game. They will be able to look after their fighters better because they know what it's like to be one and the things they go through.

I'm glad that they have teamed up though...who would've thought that Hopkins, a guy who fought so hard against promoters and "system" and had so many legal problems to get a fair deal would now be in the position to guide boxing into the future. Weird huh?

I didn't care for GBP before, but I think Hopkins' upbringing into the boxing wirld will be good for the sport. He knows how hard it is to make it, and he will be willing to go out and help others do what he had no help doing. Hopefully this will lead to the better fighters getting the fights and not just the big name fighters with big promoters.

Going back to the topic . . . Hispanic? I'm not hispanic and I'm a DLH fAN but I really thought that DHL did took a dive against BH. Reviewng that fight over and over again I just can't see those two succesive left hooks to the body lethal enough to send DLH down in the canvas . . . especially that last punch which was partially blocked by DLH elbow. :D That was a the most decent exit DLH could have made because it's only a matter of time before BH COULD have seriously hurt him and K.O. him. . . . hey that performance was worth 25 million dollars

Yeah DHL quit from top rank Too . . . that's why ****i'n dirty Arum can't shut his mouth trying to save face.

Oscar is a ***** ass biatch...he quit...i used to box and got hit in the liver...my liver is not located on my elbow. I just happen to see the De La Hoya - Hopkins fight again, and I 'll put it this way, that punch did not land on ODLH's elbow first, like alot have pointed out, but it also DID NOT land on his liver unless Oscar has a unique case of being the only person in the world to have his liver placed in an area different from everybody else. I mean if any of you guys have tapes of Ward's fights w/ Gatti, and Emmanuel Burton(I think that's his name). Also the Gatti - Dorin fight, those punches were delivered more towards the abdomen to either the left or right side of the navel, usually when fighters go for the liver shot it's usually like an uppercut to the body(some coaches call it an inside hook). Now I could've believed it if Oscar said it was a good rib shot, but liver shot hell no! Well in any case Oscar went out like a b*tch

In Gatti Ward 1, Ward hit Gatti with a body shot that sent him down, but Gatti got up and stayed alive long enough for the pain to go away, then started coming back.

I think DLH could have got up, taken a round of punishment until the end of the round, then continued to finish the fight and lose 118-109 or whatever 10 rounds to 2 with a knockdown is.

And for the record, I would not have got up.

Think about it, if you were a fighter - would you rather fight for a straight up nice guy and fellow fighter like DeLaHoya - or a guy who really doesn't care about you, just the money he can make off of you like Arum?!

By the way, it was not a liver shot, it was a kidney punch I believe...

plain and basic common sense that oscar quit. that was not a hard body shot and he was had no chance to win.
He's been in fights where he stood toe to toe and took hard shots, Chavez,Quartey,Vargas. I see nothing in his previous fights that would make me entertain the idea of him quitting. After the 8th rd, Hopkins corner told him to go to the body, he did and nailed him with a perfrct punch.

As to why he formed a partership with Hopkins, only he knows that. it could be that for the 1st time in his career, he was knocked out and he recognized hopkins' superiority.

One last point, its debatable if oscar quit. However, there is no doubt that JC Chavez quit against Oscar in the rematch, NO DOUBT!!!!!!!!!
Chavez never was questioned but Oscar was, double standard.
