View Full Version : Sugar Ray Robinson looks very ordinary to me
STILL_DETOX 09-29-2009, 03:55 PM just watched ray robinson vs carmen basillio II...why is this guy considered the greatest? (i know i might get flamed for this, but i want some feedback. + i know i shouldnt judge just from 1 fight, so recommend me his best performances)

This was also Robinsons 18th year as a pro and with almost 150 fights, not to mention Basilio was one of the greatest pressure fighters ever.
His overall competition beat is why he considered the greatest.
If not Robinson, who would you rank the greatest p4p fighter, my friend?
TheGreatA 09-29-2009, 04:52 PM just watched ray robinson vs carmen basillio II...why is this guy considered the greatest? (i know i might get flamed for this, but i want some feedback. + i know i shouldnt judge just from 1 fight, so recommend me his best performances)
He was extra-ordinary to be able to do what he did against Basilio at 38 years of age, regaining the middleweight title for a 5th time. It was not one of his best ever performances because he was aging and never the same after the 3 year break from boxing he took in 1952-1955.

mickey malone 09-29-2009, 05:31 PM Robinson ordinary!.. Perish the thought.. Some months ago, I made the mistake of suggesting that Felix Trinidad may have been a better fighter at 147.. I've since reconsidered my views..
As an amateur lightweight he was unbeaten in 85 bouts with 69 KO's, 40 of those coming in the 1st round!
He then won his first 26 professional fights inside a year!
Like Ali, he carried on for too long, which was when most of his losses occurred..
However, I don't believe he was ever beaten at welter, & avenged most of his losses at Middle.. I wouldn't quite say he was the best MW of AT, but at 147, I'm convinced he is.. You only have to study the footage sent in by GreatA (many thanks) to see that Ray Robinson was NOT an ordinary fighter!
Sugarj 09-29-2009, 05:51 PM I think the KO of Bobo Olson 3 is my favorite Ray Robinson combination of them all.

Don't get me wrong, I'd still slip him one but he's not half of a dish as Calzaghe.
Mr Boxing9 09-29-2009, 10:37 PM Maybe he ordinary on the footage you watched, because he is 12 years past his best and is 38 years old. But yet is still fighting for the middlweight title and beating a fellow great in carmon.
before you talk utter ****, do your reasearch.

You are definitely the dumbest poster i have ran across so far. The most ignorant poster of all time . He had 19 losses to 173 wins you dumb poor excuse of a maggot! He at one time fought 5 times in 4 different countries in one month! No fighter alive can do what hes done. He didnt duck nobody. Out of 198 fights 108 of his opponents were kod. He was Kod 1 time out of 198fights. Floyds couldnt be a pimple on this mans ass crack. You are a complete moron!

Not for nothing, but you should try to understand Benny's humor and sarcasm before letting fly with all the name calling. Benny is one of the best posters on this site.

I know that this is probably the first thread you've ever read that didn't have something to do with Manny Pacquiao, but surely you've grasped the concept of sarcasm by now?:smashfrea

Well now, to be fair he's probably used to seeing posts by Flawless and Horus saying just that and actually meaning it! Knowing Benny as I do I know to take it as sarcasm but I do know there are plenty of posters out there who actually believe that sort of thing.

I was about to take the bait as well and tear into Benny for saying such ignorant sh*t. I understand sarcasm but you have to know the person to "know" whether it's sarcasm or something else.
Well that ruined my post. I was putting together a whole spiel in my head about old time boxers fighting once a month, often times twice a month; not having months between bouts to prepare strategy; not having video of your opponents. Oh well. :-)

That was 19 losses out of 85 Amateur & 202 Pro bouts..
With Floyd's current activety rating, he'd need to fight for another 100 years to get any where near this kind of resume..
Had there been L/welter, L/middle & S/middle divisions back in the day, he'd have undoubtedly snatched those aswell..

AMAZING is the only word to use when describing Robinson, if i was to use four words they would be "ONE OF A KIND"

Sonny, you had a green bar the other day, how did you get turned all red?
zelley 10-02-2009, 04:06 AM Back in the Seventies, I had an 8 MM real of a Sugar Ray Robinson knockout special.
It was amazing the skills demonstrated. For instance a straight left to the body of one opponent looked liked they were speared with an ancient lance. Fast hands, fast feet, fast brain, excellent ring movement and on and on and on and he could score a knockout with one punch or a rapid fire series of combinations, take your poison.
