View Full Version : Toney-Booker On FSN Last Night Atwa_66 03-14-2005, 11:28 AM Last night Toney-Booker was on Fox Sports Network, Sunday Night Fights, anybody see it? I never saw that fight before, I'm suprised Booker went the distance with Toney, I was impressed RwK 03-14-2005, 11:32 AM Yeah. Toney looked unimpressive to say the least. I actually had Booker winning 4 or 5 rounds of that fight. Certainly Toney came on strong in the beginning and the end, but ate some punches in the process. One thing also, is Toney likes to "Play Opossum" he looks hurt on the ropes, but then counters with hard shots. That being said: It is hard to tell if he is hurt in a fight. He looked hurt against Jirov, but I just dont know. He is kind of strange, James is. He looks like he wants to take a hot bath, or eat a sandwich during the fight occasionally. Its really odd. Atwa_66 03-14-2005, 11:34 AM Yeah, he does sometimes. In the Booker fight, he was riding the ropes, and looked hurt, but would deliver nice counters, and was shaking his head "no" that Bookers shots had no effect, he's hard to understand RwK 03-14-2005, 11:36 AM he's hard to understand IMO, the hardest boxer to read based on "Body Language". Kostya Tszyu is a close second. He sometimes acts hurt, then starts trading. He is wierd as well. Except, Kostya retains that huge smile. Even when Phillips was pounding on him. He was smiling throughout the knockout. Atwa_66 03-14-2005, 11:39 AM IMO, the hardest boxer to read based on "Body Language". Kostya Tszyu is a close second. He sometimes acts hurt, then starts trading. He is wierd as well. Except, Kostya retains that huge smile. Even when Phillips was pounding on him. He was smiling throughout the knockout. Weird, I was just going to say him too. They are both crazy with the body language, I don't get either of them the giant one 03-14-2005, 12:14 PM I dont think he should play possum with Ruiz cause John wont hit him back to instigate anything. Hell just hug him to death oldgringo 03-14-2005, 12:19 PM Rw/Knives you had Booker winning 4 or 5 rounds? HAHAHA He won 1 round...if you're being charitable. I know Booker is a tomato can, D level fighter, but Toney gave him the beating of his life. Just to be realistic about the situation... spinksjinx 03-14-2005, 01:25 PM How could you even give Booker more than one round? Toney hurt his arm in the early part of the fight (which is why we havent seen him fighting) but he was landing flush all night, those Uppercuts were devastating Toney was just landing at WILL. In the words of Max Kellerman "MY GOD WHERE IS THE DEFENSE" is what I ask Booker. He looked in "awe" of Toneys skill to be able to land on him at any given time. jack_the_rippuh 03-14-2005, 05:09 PM Anybody want to post that fight up for me...I never saw it. I agree about the whole Toney thing...sometimes he looks hurt, but I guess that's just to lure the fighter in and make them through all they've got at him and then get messed up.. RwK 03-14-2005, 05:14 PM He won 1 round...if you're being charitable. That is just plain hating on Booker OG. he was busier than Toney for the most part. Toney had frequent periods of inactivity and looked mediocre. mind you: I had Jirov ahead by 7 rounds to 5 at the end of their fight. Toney is too hard to score. IMO. Neuraxis 03-14-2005, 05:42 PM Rw/Knives you had Booker winning 4 or 5 rounds? HAHAHA He won 1 round...if you're being charitable. I know Booker is a tomato can, D level fighter, but Toney gave him the beating of his life. Just to be realistic about the situation... Yeah there is no way Booker won 5, but I'll up your 1 to 2. I gave Booker the first and last rounds. RwK 03-14-2005, 06:19 PM Toney did win the fight. But he hardly looked impressive, and carried too much weight. His frame is not built to carry over 200 lbs, and I think he should weigh in at the HW limit if he fights Ruiz. Anything over would be uncivilized. joeboxer 03-14-2005, 06:24 PM Toney did win the fight. But he hardly looked impressive, and carried too much weight. His frame is not built to carry over 200 lbs, and I think he should weigh in at the HW limit if he fights Ruiz. Anything over would be uncivilized. anything less would be suicidal. he has to way at least 220 or Ruiz is going to pin him one-two-three. OH WAIT, wrong sport. I forgot Ruiz wasn't a proffesional wrestler. RwK 03-14-2005, 06:25 PM anything less would be suicidal. he has to way at least 220 or Ruiz is going to pin him one-two-three. OH WAIT, wrong sport. I forgot Ruiz wasn't a proffesional wrestler. 220 is seriously pushing it. Freddy Roach may have to bring a dolly with him, and escort Toney accordingly. oldgringo 03-14-2005, 07:05 PM That is just plain hating on Booker OG. he was busier than Toney for the most part. Toney had frequent periods of inactivity and looked mediocre. mind you: I had Jirov ahead by 7 rounds to 5 at the end of their fight. Toney is too hard to score. IMO. Giving Jirov rounds on sheer activity would be like giving Ray Leonard rounds against Hagler for having pretty flurries. 80% of Jirovs punches were meaningless and Toney was NEVER hurt in that fight. Toney was just loving the fact that he didn't have to press the action and could sit there and counter all night. He could have fought for 15 rounds...had the fight gone on any longer Jirov would have been KO'd. Jirov fought one of the best fights I've ever seen. His workrate was one of the most menacing I've ever seen at that weight, but James was just better. I had Toney winning 6-4-1 going into the final round. As far as the Booker fight goes, I'd say he looked mediocre too based on the fact that he was fighting a bum. But you have to admit, his right-hook to the body, right uppercut was a thing of beauty. Johnny Louis will be eating a lot of those. joeboxer 03-14-2005, 07:09 PM also the fact that he torn something in his bicep and never really used his left hand might have had something to do with how he looked in that fight. And by the way. I have never seen Ruiz look as good as Toney did against Booker in any of his fights RwK 03-14-2005, 07:16 PM And by the way. I have never seen Ruiz look as good as Toney did against Booker in any of his fights I personally think Jane's best fight was against Rahman. He came out in the last rounds blasting. con33 03-14-2005, 07:18 PM Yeah. Toney looked unimpressive to say the least. I actually had Booker winning 4 or 5 rounds of that fight. I give him the benifit of the doubt and say that if he isn't actually sitting on the canvas, he probably isn't hurt and just wants a sandwich. Mmmmmm sandwich. I'll check you guys later. oldgringo 03-14-2005, 07:26 PM The most hurt you'll ever see Toney is his fight with Mike Nunn (which he really wasn't that hurt in). He was eating some monsterous punches, that stopped other very good fighters like Kalambay, Curry, and Roldan. We'd probably see him legitimately hurt if he stepped in with Vitali. joeboxer 03-14-2005, 07:29 PM The most hurt you'll ever see Toney is his fight with Mike Nunn (which he really wasn't that hurt in). I love that fight and am always seeding it in case anyone wants to see James Toney vs Michael Nunn. PessimisticPug 03-14-2005, 07:45 PM Laying on the ropes has always been something that James has done. At Galaxy you would see him most often just laying on the ropes rolling with the shots and firing back, all the while talking **** and laughing at his sparring partners. James was taking an ass whoopin' from Nunn in their fight. James just caught him and Nunn was finished. James was one of those champions that got better after he won the belt. He did have trouble a few times in his early defenses but it was because of the weight issue. He would show up after a defense and was probably atleast 40lbs over the middle weight limit. He would get his plastic suit out and just sweat the weight off of him. But those days are over now that his weight is not an issue. James will defeat Ruiz and become a new Heavyweight champion. His power is decieving, when he wants to he can bang. When he doesnt he is content to just lay back and make the other fighter miss and counter with his own shots. James is one of the most talented fighters out there on the defensive end of it. There are some that are superior but James is damned good. I learned alot by just watching the guy work in the gym........Rockin' joeboxer 03-14-2005, 07:49 PM Laying on the ropes has always been something that James has done. His power isn't overwhelming or anything but these champs better not overlook it. I remember getting my hair cut downtown A2 before Toney fought Nunn. He was getting his hair done right next to me and he told me that he was gonna be HW champ one day. That was when I was just a little tyke I always believed that and still do. I think he'll beat Ruiz. PessimisticPug 03-14-2005, 08:01 PM That is so cool. I wish I got to work out with Toney. Did you guys have the same trainer back then or just the same gym. James and I actually fought out of the same amatuer gym back in the day. We did have the same trainer, his name was Greg Owens. He was a great leprechan :) , and a great person. I would get with another trainer later on, who was very good for me as was Greg. James won the title and I watched him do it and that inspired me to turn pro. I called up Jackie and she set me up with everything that I needed and I started to train first at C.M.I in southfield and then when I was ready I began training at Galaxy. Jackie had a very good stable of fighters in that gym. Watching James was good for me, in learning and seeing little tricks and moves that he would pull. The guy is a great boxer.........Rockin' joeboxer 03-14-2005, 08:12 PM I saw in the video of the Nunn fight Toney wore a star of david for his manager who was Jewish. Did you know that guy too, he must have been a pretty awsome guy for toney to put that on his trunks. Toney is actually a pretty nice guy outside of the ring. Apart from all of his talking. I've encountered Toney on several occasions and had dinner with Thomas HEarns and both are nice guys. joeboxer 03-14-2005, 08:19 PM Toney is actually a pretty nice guy outside of the ring. I really wished he had gotten a rematch with Hagler. If he hadn't broken his hand or got a massage right before I think that could have been the greatest fight of all time. You know I thought that it might have been her. And I do remember her, she seems really cool. I went to her website and even tried to find you on there but she doesn't really have anything about her fighters. Also I think that movie with Meg Ryan that came out last year is about her. PessimisticPug 03-14-2005, 08:51 PM yes, that movie was called "against the ropes" and it was about her. She is a really cool lady, she lives life and loves it. When I auditioned for the contender there were alot of the old guys from the Galaxy gym there. We took a snap shot or two together so that might end up somewhere on her site or the show, who knows. I still E-Mail her and we chat back and forth. I actually have known her since I was like 14 or so. When she started into the boxing she was coming down to our gym. So I can say that I knew her back when, and the great thing about her is, that nothing has changed. Its no big thing that I didnt make it, that was my last go at the fighting end of the sport. Im a referee now in the amatuers and just passed my test with the Association of Boxing Commisions to start refereeing the pros. So i should be up and going this year with the pros, i am happy about that. I actually used to spar with one of the guys on the show, Tarick Salmaci. He was the first guy that I sparred too at the auditions. He is a very good boxer, great jab and good movement. He really lacks in power though but from what I have seen so far he could box or outbox any guy on the show.........Rockin' joeboxer 03-14-2005, 09:06 PM Ya know, i hope ishe goes down too, hard! I hope that he wins it, I would be happy for him......Rockin' dempseyfire 03-14-2005, 09:27 PM Booker winning 4 or 5 rounds? . . . you dont know how to score a fight buddy . . thatīs all that can be said . . being generous to Booker he won the first round and that was it. Toney dominated him and that was with an injury the majority of the fight Sir_Jose 03-14-2005, 09:42 PM Runw/Knives you seriously need to learn somethings about boxing if you had Booker winning that many rounds. There is just flat out no excuse for that. I dont know about everyone else, but I find James Toney very easy to read. Just because you see James Toney against the ropes doesn't mean he doesn't want to be there. Thats exactly where Toney wants to be. joeboxer 03-14-2005, 09:45 PM Runw/Knives you seriously need to learn somethings about boxing if you had Booker winning that many rounds. Sir_Jose 03-14-2005, 09:52 PM That is retarded. and so are you. You simply are part of the "Opposition" party. Booker won 4 rounds, and you are a jackoff. You ever think about doing stand up? I'm surprised nobody else had beef with that (I'm used to hearing that Toney likes sandwiches) I have to agree here, and I actually couldn't give Booker more than 1 round. The down-side of that (for Toney) is that he should've had the guy out of there in 3, if he seriously intends to compete in the heavyweight division. I don't care how good a boxer he is, there's just no way he can possibly stay in the ring with a world-class heavyweight with big power and even reasonably fast hands for long. Klitchko would beat him down like a wife-abusing brother-in-law. But I think I'd actually prefer to see Golotta get 'hold of Toney first. I think it'd be a good fight, while it lasted. I don't know how Toney's chin would stand up to the abuse he'd get from a heavyweight, but I'd like to find out. And if Booker can get shots in on Toney, the others will too. oldgringo 03-15-2005, 12:18 AM I have to agree here, and I actually couldn't give Booker more than 1 round.
