...I'm not sure what to make of the Illini because the big ten was weak this year in my opinion. Illinois may be the best team out there but who really knows? Didn't they spank either Wake or Duke in the big ten/ACC chalenge? Even so, the ACC has won that thing every year they have had it.

Illinois beat Wake Forest by like 30 points in one of the first games of the season. The big ten was also not that weak. Look at Michigan State, I guarantee they will at least be in the sweet 16 and their ranking now is like #12, Illinois had to play and beat them several times, plus Wisconsin, Minnesota and a couple other teams in the big ten were all consistantly ranked this season in the top 25. Illinois has more wins over top 25 teams than any other team in the NCAA.

Illinois also buried Gonzaga and Cincinnati. They had Gonzaga down by over 30 points at HALFTIME and the Zags went on to earn a 3 seed and win 20 plus games losing just three or four all season...

Say what you will about the big ten, Illinois is still the team to beat. You'll notice that even the scrubs they played weren't that bad - Georgetown made the NIT; Delaware St. and Oakland both made the NCAA:

Bruce Weber is the guy Purdue should have hired to succeed Keady. Gene just wanted to stick around a few more years than he should have. Weber was a longtime Keady assistant - he was her in 1987 when Purdue was 25-5 and in 1988 when Purdue went 29-4, and in 94-96 when they won 3 straight Big ten Titles and 30 wins one year. I don't remember if was here in 2000 or not when they went to the Great 8; I do know that with an energetic and better recruiter and Weber as coach, Purdue fans like myself wouldn't have had to suffer so much these past few seasons.

Weber turned Southern Illinois around in ONE SEASON. I think, given Purdue's recent slide, Weber may not have gotten some of the credit he probably deserved while at Purdue. New coach Matt Painter coached under Weber at SIU; hopefully he brings some new energy, recruiting, and attitude to the Boilers in coming years...

I hope the Illini run through the NCAAs like it's their own Invitational...

I actually picked the correct champions for the last 3 years, but I actually paid half attention then. No f'n clue this year. My favorite team personally was the Juan Dixon led Maryland Terrapins. Too bad Dixon can't do **** in the NBA. He's decent at steals and assists but that's about it. Just too small for those NBA men.

Too bad...and I was just telling someone at work yesterday that Kansas was on a losing streak (5 of 8) and Bucknell beat a good Holy Cross team to win their conference and an upset could happen. Holy Cross beat Notre Dame on the road in the NIT; their RPI was too low to get in as an at-large NCAA...

This brings up a question that I always seem to wonder every year. How far could the NIT final teams had made it in the NCAA tourney. I'd say possibly the sweet 16. The NIT winner is better than at least half of the field of 65.

Man, that Illini - Arizona game sure was something.

Speaking of "letting us down," there was an interesting discussion about that specific phrase on the radio station I listen to in my car. Using that phrase implies that you have more invested in the Illini winning the championship than the team does. I don't think anyone should be saying, "don't let us down, guys!" It's implying A) you have more invested and you want them to win more than they want to, and B) that you already think the probability of them losing is high. It was interesting, and it was brought about because of some comments made by UNC's coach, but they made some good points on why it really shouldn't be said to the players or coaches, or anyone, really.

Watching the NIT final two days before the Final 4 is like watching the Arena Bowl two days before the Super Bowl.

I disagree. The NIT has a far longer and more storied history than the NCAA's and let's face it a third of the teams in the NCAA's are really NIT caliber, while probably a good half dozen of the NIT teams could hold there own in the NCAA's.

True, but nothing's on the line tonight. It's like a regular season game. That trophy isn't really prestigious. It's like winning the Great Alaska Shootout, and it takes place during the Final 4 week...

I'm not saying South Carolina wouldn't destroy Oakland or even beat Iowa, but Oakland and Iowa were in the BIG dance, and no one turns down an NCAA bid for an NIT anymore...

Absolutely. It would have been a nice story to see Pitino in the Championship game and it would have pissed off Kentucky fans even more than they already are, but Monday's game should be a classic.
