Kidnapped Zambo teachers freed

Three teachers kidnapped in Zamboanga Sibugay have been freed after spending over six months in captivity.

Police sources revealed, Jocelyn Enriquez and Noemi Mandi were allegedly rescued by police operatives at Barangay Bangkuang, Tipo-Tipo in Basilan while another victim Jocelyn Inion was recovered at Barangay Kabangalan in Ungkaya Pukan, still in Basilan at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The teachers were immediately transported to Zamboanga City Wednesday afternoon.

As of posting time, the teachers are being escorted by police officials to the Police Regional Office-9 in Barangay Mercedes, this city to undergo medical check-up.

In an text message sent to ABS CBN Zamboanga, Rodel Enriquez, husband of Jocelyn said, "praise the Lord, miss na talaga ng mga anak ko nanay nila."

Elmer Mandi's message also said, "Sana totoo na talaga. I hope the
Almight God heard our prayers."

Enriquez, Inion and Mandi were forcibly taken by a group of armed men while they were on their way to mainland Naga from Bangkaw-Bangkaw Elementary School on March 13. The kidnappers were initially identified to be local criminals.

The initial demand was P20 Million, which was later reduced to P10 Million and further reduced to P3M.

Earlier, authorities have insisted the teachers were not brought to Basilan, contrary to rumors that the captives were transported to the island province.

Teachers Dignity Coalition meanwhile has commended the authorities for the "job well done."

Benjo Basas, TDC Chair said, they "reiterate their constant appeal to the government to protect our schools to prevent such incidents in the future."

The relatives of the freed teachers are expected to arrive in Zamboanga City anytime to fetch their kin.

[i]3 abducted Zamboanga Sibugay teachers freed


The three public school teachers who were abducted in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay six months ago had been freed by their captors, the military and police said Wednesday.

Teachers Noemi Mandi, Jocelyn Inion, and Jocelyn Enriquez were released at about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday in Barangay Bangcuang of Tipo-Tipo town in Basilan island province.

Superintendent Abubakar Tulawi, Basilan provincial police director, said the teachers were rescued by a combined team from military intelligence and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) police.

Tulawi did not give details on the nature of the rescue operation.

Lt. Col. Romeo Brawner Jr., a spokesman for the Armed Forces of Philippines, confirmed the release of the victims, but said the victims were “recovered" and not “rescued."

In an interview with GMANews.TV, he said the victims were “recovered" through the effort of the Philippine National Police (PNP), AFP and the Crisis Management Committee in Basilan.

Brawner said no ransom was paid for the freedom of the three, who were seized by unidentified gunmen last March 13 in Naga town of Zamboanga Sibugay while they were on their way home on-board a motorized banca.

Superintendent Danilo Bacas, spokesman of the ARMM Police Office, said the teachers, all from Bangkaw-Bangkaw Elementary School in Naga, were abducted by an Abu Sayyaf faction headed by Nurjasan Jamiri.

Earlier reports said the kidnappers demanded a P10-million ransom soon after seizing the victims. They later on reduced the amount to P300,000.

Brawner said the victims would undergo initial medical exams before they would be released to their families in Zamboanga Sibugay.

Members of the activist Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) have been pressing the government to take urgent action to ensure the safe release of the victims and the safety of teachers.

The abduction of the trio came while another three teachers from Landang Gua Elementary School in Zamboanga City were being held captive by unidentified gunmen.

Teachers Janette de los Reyes, Rafael Mayonado, and Freires Quizon were seized on January 23 and released on May 27 also in nearby Basilan Island, the birth place of the Abu Sayyaf. - GMANews.TV

Hindi ko nakausap kagabi yung sister in law ko kasi mahigpit ang pagbabantay ng mga military. Yung brother in law ko na connected sa department of national defense ang nakakausap kasama yung kapatid nya. Naka DNDng sasakyan kasi sila e ako nakamotor lang. Kagabi pa byinahe ng zamboanga sibugay yung mga biktima at kaninang umaga pumunta dun yung wife ko kasama yung mga anak at yung isang sister in law ko. Baka balik nun 3 days from now. Hindi ko makontak yung cellfon nung wife ko bwisit, para sa makasagap ng latest na balita at makakuha ng insights kung ano talaga nangyari.
