Ruiz-Toney inked!
Quietman vows to bust up Toney!
WBA heavyweight champion John Ruiz’ manager/head trainer Norman “Stoney” Stone said Friday that Ruiz vs James Toney is a done deal and the only remaining questions are the title fight’s exact date and site. "Both parties have signed," Stone said. "John’s the man in the heavyweight title and Toney’s just another temporary obstacle."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, Ruiz (41-5-1, 28 KOs) proclaimed, "I am the best heavyweight in the world. I’ve been calling for a heavyweight tournament, but none of the so-called world champs are willing to risk their belts against me. Others talk about being the best, but I am the best heavyweight today. Toney’s my mandatory and his time is coming. It won’t be a problem getting rid of him before I clean up the rest of the heavyweight division. Come fight time, I’m going to bust up Toney so bad he won’t be able to trash talk anymore. But I’m not going to hurt his ears. After he wakes up, I want him to hear the ring announcer say, ‘And still the WBA heavyweight champion of the world, John ‘The Quietman’ Ruiz.’ I’m putting Toney’s lights out for good. I am the true king of the heavyweights."

Kimmy 03-12-2005, 09:26 AM Well.....I don`t think Ruiz is putting anyones lights out due to his boring style but i hope Toney beats him and maybe we`ll be rid of Ruiz. This is NOT a foregone conclusion. Ruiz someone has managed to defeat Evander Holyfield, Kirk Johnson, Hasim Rahman, Fres Oquendo and Andrew Golota. With this run of....in some cases...questionable wins, but non the less wins, is there any reason to write off Ruiz once more? I see this as a 50/50 fight and the outcome depending on Don King friendly judging!
neils7147933 03-12-2005, 09:28 AM I imagine 80% of BoxingScene will jump on me, but I see this as a Ruiz UD...
Sidestep_1 03-12-2005, 09:39 AM I think Toney will get an easy decision. He is way to smart for Ruiz.
BrooklynBomber 03-12-2005, 09:42 AM I dont like both fighters even though I will root for Toney to dispose of Ruiz. Too bad Toney will have to ko Ruiz to a win
Cause no way in hell HE can get the win on points
Toney by late round KO(I hope) or Ruiz by UD
spinksjinx 03-12-2005, 09:43 AM Ruiz will smother Toney, Toney might have quick hands but you have to be quick on your feet to handle Ruiz. Toneys style is tailor made for Ruiz, Toney walks forward and uses upper body movement. You have to beat Ruiz by knocking him out which wont happen Toney isnt the hardest hitter at Heavyweight and Ruiz has a pretty good chin. Toney isnt quick on his feet either.
Ruiz in a boring Unanimous Decision victory, Ruiz will hold and smother Toneys shots, for the love of god Toney better pray Nady is the ref...
I advise a lot of you to go watch Holyfield vs Toney, Toney stays to close to his opponents....Toney is ****ed.

I am picking Toney but you might be right Jinx, I think sometimes I get too caught up in who is technically better than how the fight will play out due to styles and other variables.
spinksjinx 03-12-2005, 09:53 AM I am picking Toney but you might be right Jinx, I think sometimes I get too caught up in who is technically better than how the fight will play out due to styles and other variables.
I like both fighters, I will be rooting for Toney to put an end to such a boring fighter but at the same time I will be rooting for Ruiz and I would pray he beats Toney convincingly by either knocking him down and winning on points or knocking him out, I would love to hear Merchant ask him why he lost and what he thought about the fight...Toney runs his mouth so much, I cant wait for him to lose get asked what happened considering he calls everybody garbage.
But like I said, Toney isnt a move on his feet and fights at a close range and always has, this will play to the advantage of Ruiz and if anyone thinks Toney will be coming in with a different gameplan it wont be happening. Toney has never changed his style and has never had great footwork and he can counter shots all he wants but when Ruiz hugs him and hits him while holding it wont do any good for Toney.
Toney should have went after Brewster.

Brewster would have been an easier fight but I think Toney took the right fight because he going for one of the major belts.
ejk22 03-12-2005, 10:13 AM This should be an interesting fight for me to watch. The two boxers I hate more than anything are facing each other. Who do I root for?
Fareastwarrior 03-12-2005, 10:27 AM I hate both fighters, Ruiz is incredible boring, is more hugging then boxing in the ring, Toney has an unbelievable big mouth, it's time that someone shuts it forever. If I had to pick a winner, then I think that Johnny Ruiz will win on unanimous decision and that Toney will be quiet for a while.
spinksjinx 03-12-2005, 10:37 AM Brewster would have been an easier fight but I think Toney took the right fight because he going for one of the major belts.
At this point any belt is credible.
AintGottaClue 03-12-2005, 11:01 AM even though this fight probally wont be any good it needs to happen for the shake of the heavyweight divsion
theironone 03-12-2005, 11:04 AM I really like Toney and hope he beats Ruiz, Spinks is right about styles though and Ruiz usually finds a way to win, but i hope my gut feeling is right I think Toney has far too many skills for Ruiz and will beat him easily (UD) then after that i hope he sticks one on Stoney cos i ****in hate that arsehole
ejk22 03-12-2005, 11:08 AM I don't know maybe I'll quietly root for Ruiz because I would prefer Ruiz to fight possibly Vitali (if Vitali defeats Rahman) and have Vitali destroy huggy bear rather than Toney winning and have us be subjected to his fans talking **** and Toney talking even more ****.
This may be the only time I will be rooting for James Toney. I also wouldn't mind seeing him get his mouth shut for good, but I would rather see it done in devastating fashion by either Klit.
spinksjinx 03-12-2005, 12:06 PM even though this fight probally wont be any good it needs to happen for the shake of the heavyweight divsion
This fight definately doesnt need to happen, If Ruiz wins the boring fights of the division the general public loves will be on going. (Although I respect Ruiz for his work) If Toney wins we will be subjected to his charading around on The Best Damn Sports Show fighting bums again. I truly dont believe if he wins the wba title he will fight anyone credible and when he steps in their with a big man he will be done for. Id still like to see Toney take on Mccline...I think McCline would walk through his shots and beat that ass, Remember Holyfield old and over as he was against Toney in their fight had Toney in trouble in the first round, imagine if a big man was coming at him.....Toney's style may be slick at a lower weight but by him coming forward to much it is going to get him caught....
Dr.Depravity 03-12-2005, 12:12 PM This may be the only time I will be rooting for James Toney. I also wouldn't mind seeing him get his mouth shut for good, but I would rather see it done in devastating fashion by either Klit.
Ditto :) I couldn't agree more. The good news is Someone has to lose this fight.
Sinatra.Jr 03-12-2005, 12:19 PM Toney would win Ruiz by UD. Under best condition. Toney is talented boxser than Ruiz, like former Roy Jones Jr. I think.
tracylee 03-12-2005, 01:23 PM I imagine 80% of BoxingScene will jump on me, but I see this as a Ruiz UD...
No need to jump on you cause youre probably right, unfortunately! This could very easily be a 12 round nightmare...but I hope somehow, someway, Toney manages to avoid being held (according to Teddy Atlas it takes 2 to hold  ) and can eek out a win. It far past time Ruiz lost!
spinksjinx 03-12-2005, 01:27 PM Toney would win Ruiz by UD. Under best condition. Toney is talented boxser than Ruiz, like former Roy Jones Jr. I think.
To beat Ruiz you have to be dazzling on your feet, Roy had great footwork Toney DOES NOT.
Hurlex 03-12-2005, 02:17 PM damn this fight....i dont like ruiz, but ...what the hell, toney is not that much of a step up,he's pretty boring except for his iterview etc...i just dont think toney would carry that belt anymore better than ruiz...either way i dont care who wins, but i will be interested to see who wins this and how. If toney underestimates big papa's bear power and gets laid out,i will laugh my ass off for about 3 weeks. I hope someone gets ko'ed atleast,so the people that order this fight dont feel like there money was robbed by don king.
Kimmy 03-12-2005, 02:49 PM I am like many others in not liking Toney but i won`t downgrade his skills. Toney is great boxer and miles ahead of Ruiz. I can`t really pick a winner ( if the judges are fair then i lean towards Toney ) but i think i kow its going 12 rounds which means it`ll probably be a bad fight to watch!
trinidadpr87 03-12-2005, 03:20 PM I hope Ruiz ko's Toney's ass. :boxing:
enadeus 03-12-2005, 03:41 PM Ruiz will win, it is obvious.
joeboxer 03-12-2005, 03:41 PM Ruiz will smother Toney, Toney might have quick hands but you have to be quick on your feet to handle Ruiz. I advise a lot of you to go watch Holyfield vs Toney, Toney stays to close to his opponents....Toney is ****ed.
That is a really good analysis if Ruiz fought his normal fight. Honestly I think that Ruiz only uses his punch and hold style when he thinks that might get knocked out. Remember before the Jones fight he said he wanted to go back to his puncher mover style! Remember how ****ty that was, it wasn't just the referre keeping Ruiz off Jones, Ruiz didn't really want to grapple.
So if Ruiz tries to box Toney, toney could easily start piling on the points. Also you no that the networks would be happy to have Toney replace Ruiz so I am predicting a ref that takes away points from Ruiz if he tries to hold or low blow. If Toney doesn't get hit with a KO punch, which I say 60 percent chance he wont he will take the decision.
joeboxer 03-12-2005, 03:44 PM Then watch how quiet Ruiz gets. I just hope that they don't have a re-match clause.
jovanchan 03-12-2005, 04:26 PM I would see this is a pretty even fight. It will be very exciting. I can't wait to see Ruiz's axx get kicked. The only thing I worry about is the stamina of Toney. Toney has been so inacitve comparing to Ruiz...
I think Toney would have little trouble knocking Ruiz out.
He punches way too effective, has a superior defense, and is a better fighter overall. I can picture Ruiz throwing his useless combos to the body, and Toney countering with uppercuts.
Toney K.O. 5
bodypunching is overrated, and headhunting is where it is at.

I cant believe i want to watch a Ruiz fight, infact i'm really interested.

Toney is one of those old school fighters who could fight 15 rounds easy. I dont think he'll have too many problems...unless he comes in severely overweight.

That might be a bit of stretch there because if Booker won any round during their fight he won the 12th just because he outworked Toney because Toney seemed so tired. I'd agree with you that Toney could go 15 rounds easily at the lighter weight classes, but not when he weighs 227 lbs. Toney should come in less than 220 lbs for this fight, and I'd favor him greatly to win, but if he comes in heavier than he did against Booker, then anything can happen.
Renegade 03-12-2005, 05:31 PM At this point any belt is credible.
Or, at this point NO belt is credible.
Soundtraveler 03-12-2005, 05:32 PM Toney wins this one, by DQ as Ruiz is finally punished for being a discredit to the sport of boxing. Ruiz should just go ahead and admit he dreams of being a wrestling champion, since he obviously loves to hug overgrown sweaty men....
dodge 03-12-2005, 07:20 PM Toney by UD. Go Toney!!! His skillz are going to win this one.
ryankivell 04-11-2005, 12:10 PM Ruiz is a big man who lost to a little man in Roy Jones. Don't get me wrong, Ruiz is a good fighter, but he doesn't have the firepower that Toney has. Also, just take one look at their records and the quality of opponents. Toney by KO in 5.
freirui 04-11-2005, 01:18 PM Ruiz by late round KO or Ruiz by UD

Ruiz is a good fighter?? Sure dont hear that very often...an excellent hugger perhaps, but a good fighter?
Cortez 04-11-2005, 04:36 PM Ruiz is terrible for this sport as alot agree.
I dont wanna see any hugging or man love.
Toneys counter skills are a joy to watch, if Ruiz dont hold him.
I would luv ruiz to get taken out and quite frankly I would never like to see him in a ring again.
HW boxing is getting so much bad flack due to Ruiz, not just a boring fighter but a serious lack of skill, and the holding oh god, remember the rahman fight
NO MORE
BTW I dont care if his "styke", is "effective", it is absurd.
