Garry Kasparov retires

By JUDITH INGRAM - Associated Press

MOSCOW (AP) — Garry Kasparov, the chess world’s youngest-ever champion and its public face and undisputed king the last two decades, made a stunning move shortly after winning a prestigious tournament in Spain: He announced his retirement from professional play.

The disclosure from the Russian grandmaster — the world’s No. 1 ranked chess player since 1984 who is considered by some the best in the history of the game — came shortly after he won the 14-match Linares tournament in Spain on Thursday, despite losing the final game.

He was the youngest world champion ever and was world no.l since 1984. I wish he and Bobby Fischer lived in the same era. Their matches would have been classics! Great guy!

Rumour has it that the wants to run for president of Russia in 2008 (or whatever year the next election is). He's one of the most outspoken Putin opponents around.

I'm surprised he retired before he played against his former protege, who he had a falling out with a few years ago. He kept saying he wanted to play him and show him who the real champ is.

Anybody here play chess? I'm possibly the world's worst player at it, at least among people who try now and then.

Running for president of Russia? Well, I know he was politically inclined right from the start and he's currently one of Putin's major critics. He may be one of, or could be the greatest in chess, but he's known to be a hot-head and egoistic. So I doubt if he'll be effective as Russia's highest leader. Maybe he should start as mayor or something and feel the game first, before shooting for the highest position.

I was a varsity chess player in university, but haven't touched the pieces in years, so I'm kinda rusty now and I don't have the mental patience like before.

The present generation knew practically only 2 world chess champions - Karpov and Kasparov. You may add Spassky and Bobby Fischer if you're old enough. It was Kasparov who held the crown the longest - more than 20 years - and won tournaments the most.

But I think Fischer was better in his prime. It was FISCHER AGAINST THE RUSSIANS AND THE WORLD during his time, because nobody could beat him. But he was also one of the most eccentric personality the world has ever known.

That majority of great chess players are eccentric but no one was as bad as Fisher. The man was hermit. I guess it the mad genuis thing going on.
