The guy probably beat the best opposition ever, Never lost a fight in his prime.(all of his losses were after his returns)He was an excellent fighter. He had a superb combination of speed, skill and power. I mean I can continue for hours but just get some of his fights(when he was in his prime, especially at welter) and you will understand. He rightfully deserves the title of the best P#P ever.

I think another reason he's considered so great is that he came back years after his first retirement, and still kicked some ass. He lost fights, too, but I'm fairly certain he regained his belt(s).

If you have to ask you are probably not as big a boxing fan as you think you are.

SRR is the greatest ever, period. He lost his first fight to Jake LaMotta after winning his first 40 professional fights! Oh, and did you know that LaMotta outweighed Robinson by 15 pounds in the official weigh-in? They fought at Middleweight (160 pounds) and Ray weighed about 145 pounds for that fight. He came back and beat the living crap out of LaMotta the next three times they met in the ring. Jake is quoted as saying that nobody ever beat him the way Ray Robinson did.

After the LaMotta loss, Robinson came and was unbeaten in his next 91 professional fights (89 wins, 1 draw, and 1 NC). That, in itself, is impressive. So, at one point, Ray was 129-1-1 with 1 NC. Also, Ray fought his first 100 o so fights at Middleweight without ever weighing more than 147 pounds! He was at a huge disadvantage and yet managed to beat almost everyone they put in front of him. His loss to LaMotta was on account of the flu (he was very sick but needed the money to pay for his bills so he decided to fight). Just look at what Gatti did to Gamache because he weighed 15 pounds more than he did on fight night and think of what Robinson went through in over 100 matches.

The guy was extremely quick and packed a big punch with both hands. His KO reccord was amazing: 131 fights (before his second loss) and 87 of those ending early. If you ever watch some of his early fights, it's a beauty to watch him in the ring. He was more gracefull and moved better (and quicker) than Ali ever thought he could. Actually, Ali modled himself after Robinson.

Sorry for the rant, but I don't like people disrespecting the greatest fighter ever!

Good post, PRBoxingfan. You said just about everything there is to say about this. One thing is that I don't think a lot of people really understand SRR's greatness because he was rarely caught on film during his prime, one-punch knockout days. He was amazing on the clips we do have of him, and most of those were taken well after his primetime years.

What do...

Sammy Angott
Fritzie Zivic
Jake LaMotta
Henry Armstrong
Kid Gavilan
Bobo Olson
Randy Turpin
Rocky Graziano
Gene Fullmer
Carmen Basilio

...all have in common? They are all members of the boxing hall of fame and at one point lost to Sugar Ray Robinson. Not to mention tough and very good contenders such as Charlie Fusari and Tommy Bell. He was a 5 time middleweight champion of the world. And he beat his best opposition when he was past his prime and one weight class above his best. Ray began his career as a lightweight (was probably the best in that division at the time) and fought up to lt. heavyweight.

But Robinson's greatness can't be quantified by his resume. You have to see him in action. When you do, you'll come to one conclusion: he's as close to a perfect fighter as there ever will be. There wasn't one thing he couldn't do in the ring. He had it all: blinding speed, one-punch power, heart, chin, stamina, incredible boxing ability, and one helluva killer instinct. And next to Joe Louis, he was probably the greatest combination puncher to ever live.

What's great about Ray Robinson? The question should be what isn't great about him.

Yeah, but the smaller Robinson came back to win 5 times against an opponent he was smaller than. Chop won't do that.

Can someone get banned for stupid posts? I nominate this thread! Also, while he was a welterweight in weight, he fought middleweights. He loss to a 160 pound LaMotta while only weighing 145 pounds himself. He next three meetings were the same weight difference and he still beat Jake from Pillar to Post.

Please watch a documentary on Robinson (at the very least) and then post your comments. I'm sure you will change your opinion.

Man oh man, there may have never been a more coordinated fighter than the great Sugar Ray Robinson...I lie to you not, I once seen the guy on film throw a body combination to a stalking opponent while simultaneously backpeddling, BEAUTY AT ITS BEST!, Another interesting thing about the comparison of Pound 4 Pound and Sugar Ray Robinson is that the title "Pound 4 Pound" was invented for Sugar Ray Robinson being so that back then the heavyweight champion was the "best" or "greatest"....Speed/Accuracy/Coordination/Power/Heart are the dynamics of a legendary fighter, guess what....that equaled Sugar Ray Robinson.

Look, robinson was boxing's Prophet. He is as important figure to boxing as Jesus to Christianity. So just try to get your hands on some of his fights and you will understand. There is nobody who was as good in boxing as him.
