None of them are underground. Those are all pretty much Mainstream artists, everyone knows about the Wu.

They are underground to the young kids who make up the bulk of the buying public. They're too young to remember the Wu when they were mainstream and the kind of rap that the Wu (and many other rappers from the 90s) makes isn't popular anymore (with most people) so they don't pay attention to what they come out with now. The rap game has changed a lot since the 90s...

I get you, but they are not underground so much as they are old. I consider an artist underground if they have not yet "blown up." I mean think about it, "Wu-Tang Forever," "The W," "36 Chambers," and I believe a few more of their other albums have gone Platinum. Underground artists would be like...

R.A. The Rugged Man, dude's been around for years and hardly anybody knows about him, he was on a track with Biggie a long time ago, he's a crazy lyricist and is still, for the most part, unknown.

I mean it doesn't really matter but, whatever.

:)

Shad, Mr. Lif, Cannibal Ox, Company Flow, Juggaknots, Lootpack, Torae, etc.
None of these guys are going platinum anytime soon.

i would like to contribute to this "underground" discussion...

it is difficult to define the term underground in relation to hip hop but i view it as a genre seperate from the hip hop that is played on the radio. i think that that is the main difference.
take a group like gangstarr for example...
Guru and DJ Premier were both famous and successful artists but they are underground and always will be. they said it themselves...
just because they are well known it doesn't mean that they are mainstream.
but even if they are...so what?
they are still one of the best duos to ever do it. period.

it bothers me when people disrespect artistry because it has become more broadly appreciated and popular. just because something's on the radio it doesn't mean it should be immediately deemed garbage.

no one's doing that here, i'm just saying...
sometimes i think that people are so concerned with being super underground that they become a bit ignorant.

They were maintream back in the days, but now you barely hear them on the radio.

Regarding the underground discussion....

It all depends what music you define as underground. I still consider the Wu underground, no matter how popular and successful they are. It's the sound they put out that has to be taken into consideration.

Now don't get me wrong, when Ghostface grabs Ne-yo for a guestspot, or features on an Amy Winehouse track, he is obviously going for mainstream appeal......that will garner plenty radioplay.....but if you ask the general radio audience to listen to Big Doe, or Fishscale, a majority would not liken to it.
