View Full Version : Paper Champions
PessimisticPug 03-09-2005, 03:32 PM I hear the term alot on this site about how fighters are only paper champions. Would anybody like to fill me in on what qualifies one to be a paper champion and then maybe identify a few for me. I read that one believed that Foreman and Liston were only paper champions. I am unable to comprehend the logic. Help me out here guys.........Rockin'
Receiving a Vacated Title maybe?
Soon enough "MikeHunt" will enter, and list every fighter who has ever lived, and somehow explain how they are paper champions.
Sir_Jose 03-09-2005, 03:42 PM A paper champion would be a guy like Vivian Harris. Although Vivian is a very good fighter in his own right he is not a champion just because he has a belt.
There is only one champion at 140 and thats Tszyu everyone should know that.
also take a look at a guy like Macelino Masoe acording to the WBA he is champion at 160, but we all know Bernard is the only real champion.
PessimisticPug 03-09-2005, 03:45 PM The only guy that I can think of that was truely a paper champion was Primo Carnera. That guy was brought to the u.s by the mob, then paraded around as a boxing giant when the guy couldnt even really fight yet. Without the help of the press and the mob Carnera would have been little if anything in the heavyweight division. He is truely a fabricated champion, he learned to fight a bit in his time but nothing of the calibure that true champions are...........Rockin'
Neuraxis 03-09-2005, 03:58 PM Someone who claims to be the the champ (he has a belt or belts) yet he never beat the champ.

If i exclude the word 'paper champion' from my statement would you feel better? It won't change my opinion, Liston and Foreman were/are overrated and neither gave Ali a tough fight.
haha .... hahahaha I love all the drama on here
I think Ali is over rated and lennox lewis would own his ass.
MikeHunt 03-09-2005, 04:27 PM I think Ali is over rated and lennox lewis would own his ass.
Lewis is susposedly gay, he probably wants to own Ali's ass.

Exactly! A paper champ is a fighter holding any title OTHER than the world title, right? I've often wondered all that mess with the alphabet titles, etc. myself, so I'm glad somebody asked this question! I didnt want to ask myself cause I've already been told that I didnt know "dick" about boxing, and I damn sure wasnt gonna prove it by asking that particular ? :o
So anybody with the IBF, WBA, etc. titles are paper champs?
tracylee 03-09-2005, 04:36 PM Lewis is susposedly gay, he probably wants to own Ali's ass.

Yes, he married Violet, a girl he had been dating for years. And, she just had their kid. Okay?

Pretty much.
They are "paper champs" if they are not the real champion in that division.

Maybe they mean the linear champ. The man who beat the man who beat the man. Back when they used to have, and I know it is hard to believe, ONE BELT there was only the linear champ. And in the case of abdication while being the man, the winner of the fight between number two and three at the time (usually by Ring Magazine rankings) would crown the linear champ. I am not so sure about the abdication part though. So if anyone would like to clear that up I would like to know as well.

I know alot of people consider the Ring belt the one, true belt.

elveiel 03-09-2005, 05:40 PM Gay? According to whom? Somebody should have told him that before he got married and had a kid, dont ya think?
You didnt know the rumour, the UK press even run a telephone number for one of his previous gay lovers to come forward, or any girl he's dated so they could prove if he was gay one way or another. :D
Lewis didnt help because he kept this Violet girl secret, he said he had a lady but nobody had seen her.

I dont put any stock in rumors, especially the vicious ones. 9 times out of 10 theyre not true, such as with Lewis. Hey, the man didnt want his lady dragged thru the press, then he's even more of a gentleman than I originally thought...good for him!

Nah his ladys just ugly, he didnt want to be seen out with her. :D
Seriuosly mate, thats the reason he give but the rumour started way before he met her. He probably wanted a good career, its far more tempting to go to bed rather than the gym. :luvbed:

There's something very cool about keeping her name and face (her private life, for that matter) out of everyone's reach..it's nobody's business anyway. I just know he dated her for years, and the fact that she has the same name his mother does charmed him somewhat (according to an article I read). And youre probably right about training, etc...it's a well known fact that women and sex can drain a fighter during training, so thats a good point too. ;)
I think alot of the rumors can be contributed to the fact that he has manners...plays chess and didnt spend time in and out of jail. He's not a hell raiser or a womanizer, and for some narrow minded people, that makes him gay. Which is down right silly I think.

Its only right you get this post mate. probably 1/3 of my total were telling you your wrong so my 3,000th will be a nice change.
I agree with you  being a badass aint all its cracked up to be, it sucks ass when you dont know if your going prison or if you ladys gonna find you cheating. I dont blame Lewis, its the right way to live.
BUT I honestly dont have much respect for Lewis, he's been quoted a few times and he seems very arrogant. setting out to beat white fighters to make himself feel better sucks ass too.
Big Up To The 3000 Posts Retard !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No way, there rated as two of the best heavys of all time.
Paper champs are fighters like Vivian Harris, Jeff Lacy, Arturo Gatti or Clinton Woods. Fighters calling themselves world champs without beating a named opponent yet.
are Liston and Foreman paper champions? what are your opinions guys ....Rockin'
liston and foreman were paper champs , but the worst in history is marvin hagler , what a fraud.
and sugar ray robinson was a paper champ , he was only a good tap dancer.
morrad hakkar is THE PEPOLE CHAMP !!!!!

Moron Hakkar is the people's champ, he's the reason i watch boxing!!
I have to go fill my lady with premium fuel, see ya'll later :p
Kimmy 03-09-2005, 06:54 PM John Ruiz classic paper champion. He was awarded the title in a court room. Lennox lewis, given the vacant WBC title in the court room.
Evander Holyfield won the vacant WBA title against Ruiz in August 2000, Lennox had vacated the belt, the title was meaningless!
Chris Byrd`s title won when Lennox vacated, this is a worthless title.
In fact, Klitscko isn`t really the champion, that title belongs to Lennox Lewis and will do untill the rumours of his comeback stop!

Thanks. And as for Foreman and Liston being paper champs, they were not. How many belts were there when Liston and Foreman took the titles? Didn't they have them all? Liston was thought to be the baddest man on the planet while he was champ. And Foreman beat both of the title holders with his skill and a crap load of power in 73 and again in 94. He stepped in the ring with the recognized champion and beat them. A paper champion is someone who has a belt no one respects (i.e. the six round belt from the Next Great Champ, that sh^t cracks me up every time!) or is awarded a belt without having to fight for it. In my opinion the Ring Magazine belt is the truest measure of who is the champ. I also recognize some of the other alphabet belts as actual belt holders. But I do it like the supreme court on a case by case basis.
morrad hakkar is THE PEPOLE CHAMP !!!!!

probably the term is coined to "champions" who didn't really deserve to be one. they are good only in paper, meaning, they're credentials are good only when written but not in action.
i disagree with foreman, the guy is a great champion

I would agree that the linear champ or in the case that there is not a linear champ then the ring magazine champ would be the real champ. But here's another question how does the linear champ not also always have the ring belt?

Because if the number two and number three never fight when the Champ vacates, then the Ring Belt would be vacant until whoever #2 & #3 are fight. This is a big reason why there are some lower weight divisions with vacant lineal (I made the mistake of calling it linear when it is lineal, like in the line of kings and such) title. They just move up and down too much and vacate titles often. That is why Heavyweight is the easiest one to determine the lineal champ.

Does this mean that even though Virgil Hill was the light heavyweight lineal champ, he was never the Ring Magazine Champ?

Can anyone see what I'm getting at?
I do. The only thing is, if you replace the linear champ with the "ring magazine" champ, you might end up with Toney, RJJ, or Ruiz in that spot.

Right so how was RJJ Ring Magazine Champ at LHW?
boxernyc 03-10-2005, 10:25 PM Can anyone see what I'm getting at?
The Ring belt was just restarted a couple of years ago. There was a big scandal a long time ago where the editors were caught accepting bribes and the magazine was looked at as not being credible. So they stopped issuing their belt. I think they still did the rankings, they just weren't as up front about giving out their belts.
Neuraxis 03-10-2005, 11:20 PM not at lightheavy,
at heavy. He beat Ruiz. and Ring magazine does a good job being retarded, comparing fighters wins and losses.
Huh? Ruiz was never the Ring Champ at heavyweight, but RJJ was the Ring Champ at lightheavyweight.
Kimmy 03-11-2005, 06:53 AM Actually Roy Jones shouldn`t have been ring light heavyweight champ as the linar title never belonged to him. It was Daruis M ( can`t beat spell the name ) who defeated Virgil Hill in 1997 to win the WBA/IBF titles to go along with the WBO title. The real Linar champ is whom ever the WBO champ is because of the accomplishment of DM in 1997.
I am so Glad u mention everybody thinks Roy Jones is a legend the guy never won a undisputed title
To say liston and foremann was paperchamps are completely insane, they are both in the 10 top ten of all time.
Sinatra.Jr 03-11-2005, 08:54 AM paper campion-Francois Botha.
Why he became campion? As I know he didn't win the title bouts.
It's mysterious.
nastko 03-11-2005, 09:19 AM a paper champion would be someone like Ricky Hatton who is a paper champion with the paper title WBU.

That's why I'm wondering if something like what happened with the WBC belt and Rocchigiani happened with the Ring Belt as well.

He beat Axel Schulz for the IBF belt in 1995 which was probably the worst year for heavyweight boxing in terms of who held the belts. As Frank Bruno had the WBC belt and Bruce Seldon had the WBA belt. Botha was stripped of his belt though for having tested positive for steroids.
