View Full Version : Jose Luis Castillo Lightwieght all time great?
rouge_warrior 03-09-2005, 05:07 AM The recent run of JLC has been impressive to say the least. He has beaten Juan Lazcano, Joel Casamayor, and Julio Diaz in consecutive fights. Not to mention his first fight with FMJR, in which many believed he won, JLC has made a strong claim to being this generations greatest Lightweight. Sure some will scream Mosley and Whitaker, but due to quality of competition, I give the edge to JLC! Your thoughts please.
Nice post. I gotta tell you this though, I'm thinkin' you meant to call yourself ~ rogue warrior. Rogue is the cool one man army warrior dude. Rouge is the powder that women used to put on their cheeks to make them red.
masterdirector 03-09-2005, 07:48 AM or maybe he's french and Rouge is Red Warrior
but no, whats his name is definitely not an all-time great. Unless you consider getting stopped by Julio Alvarez a sign of greatness. And no way in ****ing hell he really beat Casamayor. You obviously didn't watch that fight man. Casa was robbed just to make this stupid ass fight between Corrales and Castillo.
rogue_warrior 03-09-2005, 08:13 AM Point taken...i'm now Rogue Warrior instead of Rouge "powder" Warrior. Good looking out.

:biggthump Right on, man! :boxing:
oldgringo 03-09-2005, 10:32 AM Castillo is a great fighter and a tough SOB...but I don't think he even belongs in the top 10-15 guys at lightweight.

hahahahhaha
too funny
moochi 03-09-2005, 11:27 AM one of the all time lightweight greats to grace this warrior sport.........i just loved his whipping of pretty boy in the 1st match......he is a legend.....!
grace this warrior sport.........
That is all he is programmed to do. I am 100% sure, you will see the same Castillo for the rest of time. He keeps flipping the hourglass over, time and time again.
mic573 03-09-2005, 11:35 AM I don't think he is an all time great lightweight but he is the best lightweight today.
TyrantT316 03-09-2005, 12:56 PM only time will tell my friends...

Actually, Castillo's 4 losses (prior to PBF) were loses by TKO on account of cuts. Every one of those fights was stopped because Castillo used to cut easily. I don't know what he did to fix the problem, but I haven't seen him cut in a loooong time.
His first loss to PBF was debatable. I thought it was a very close fight and I would've given the nod to Castillo by 115-113. The same goes for the Casa fight. It was very close and I had JLC winning by the same score. I could see the fight being a draw, but to say that Casa should've won or that he was robbed is just wrong.

Hence the reason he has upgraded to v2.02, and has a hardened exterior shell. Diego had better hope he can penetrate it.

I think he's got a point...
MikeHunt 03-09-2005, 02:20 PM Duran's position as the greatest lightweight ever is secure.

JLC has never been down so far as I can remember. Diego is a hard-hitting mofo but he also doesn't have the best chin. I see Diego making a good fight but getting beaten under the preassure Castillo brings to the table. Castillo wins by KO9.

You just about nailed it. Imo he is the best lightweight currently fighting. Should he beat Corrales then he should be considered an all time great, not the best but atleast top 10.
Duran's position as the greatest lightweight ever is secure.
So let me get this straight.
lets say hypothetically:
Castillo beats:
Corrales, Tszyu, rematches and beats Mayweather, Moves up to 147 and beats Mosley, Judah, Spinks etc,
If he did all of that, which I am not saying he will......
he would not eclipse Duran? Because I think he is almost as good at lightweight right now.

First of all...none of that is ever going to happen besides maybe Corrales. He'd give Tszyu a spirited effort but would be stopped in the middle rounds. Mayweather has his number, and the guys at 147 are WAY too much for him. And if he did, then yes he'd be an all-time great lightweight. I don't think he'll come close to eclipsing Duran even if he does half of that...it's just not gonna happen. Duran would have eaten Castillo alive, along with everyone else on that list. JLC is a great fighter, but not an all-time great yet.
And if he did, then yes he'd be an all-time great lightweight.
If he did:
I think the case could be made that he would be the greatest fighter of all time.
not just lightweight IMO.

I think you are going a little overboard there.
I think you are going a little overboard there.
If he beats:
Corrales, Tszyu, Mayweather, Mosley, Judah, and Spinks.
I think he deserves a shot at that title.
Welcome to the the forums rogue_warrior
I hope you have bullet proof vest because if you say something wrong everyones going to be blasting.
Sir_Jose 03-09-2005, 04:57 PM If Castillo can beat Corrales then he would crack the top ten. Look at all the guy's he's fought.
Floyd Mayweather 2x
Stevie Johnston 2x
Julio Diaz
Joel Cassamayor
Juan Lazcano
Cesar Bazan
Both Johnston and Mayweather were p4p fighters at the time of thos fights. In pretty much everyones opnion he's 1-1 with Floyd.

-ps. I ran out of weed, so Ill be back to defend this ridiculous statement later Mic.
:)
You better get a big bag of weed because I don't see how you can defend that statement.

The only reason I think he shouldn't be considered an all time great, even with a win over Chico, is because of the way he's won/lost/whatever. He officially lost to Floyd twice, Juaregui twice, Soto once, and some other guy I forget. Although I think that the first fight with Mayweather was close and Castillo may have won...he still "lost" the fight. A draw & MD or SD or whatever it was with Johnson was nice, but he didn't convincingly beat him both times. Many thought that Casa beat Castillo and I personally scored it a draw. Yet again another unconvincing win. And after that Bazan, Diaz, and Lazcano were nice wins, but nothing extraordinary. I just think he needs to do a bit more than just Corrales to crack a top 10 list. A win over Corrales would get him close however.
If you think about it:
there are people who think JCC is the best fighter of all time. In reality, they have alot of reasons to think so. Especially how he was great for such a long period of time.
I have already heard comparisons of JLC to JCC, not saying he should be considered in his class already,
but if he beats the fighters in the forementioned lists, then I think he would rival JCC somewhat. Hence the logic you could use to say he "could possibly" be an all time great, when everything is said and done.
morancito 03-09-2005, 08:03 PM JLC is proving to be great for his time. Not all-time.
He has a long way to go and is not a youngster anymore.
IwatchBoxing 03-09-2005, 08:18 PM Where the people who flamed me for giving rounds to Trinidad :D , I think this is much worse.
LOOK THE GREATEST LIGHTWEIGHT EVER!
I do not see why that logic is not understandable.
I do see how giving Tito 11 rounds of the Oscar fight is not though.
