View Full Version : What's so great about George Foreman?
justin04 03-09-2005, 02:31 AM Okay, he has huge punching power - that counts for alot.
But:
-He's slow
-He's sloppy (hands low, lazy jab, wild roundhouse punches)
-He has almost no defensive skills
-He launches only knockout punches, and so tends to punch himself out, instead of throwing a variety of shots, some intended just to score or set up bigger shots.
note: i've only seen fights of his from the 70s (Fraizer, Ali, Lyle), so maybe he was a more developed fighter during his second run in the 80s/90s, i'm not sure...

yeah hes a big heavy
Italian250 03-09-2005, 08:46 AM Foreman could be beat if you could get him into the later rounds ( see him vs. JImmy Young ), His technique was terrible ( see him vs. Ali ), he didn't pace himself and his defense was non existant ( see him vs Ron Lyle ), but....he was THE MOST POWERFUL prize fighter who EVER LIVED ( see him vs 68 KNOCKOUT victims ).

i dont care how slow he is his power makes up for it
hey man #1 should be his grill!!
that;s whats so special about him his GRILL!!
DR. FREECLOUD 03-09-2005, 09:02 AM the george of the 80/90 comebacks was alot more defensive and faught smarter fights, i agree that he was sloppy in his early days.
Marjoh 03-09-2005, 09:15 AM He's punches goes through his opponents defense. And yeah, he tried to fight more smarter during his comeback trail because he was old enough to know he can't take too much punishment heads-on (well, maybe during the fight, but it's the long term we're talking about here). There were three different prime Foreman. Prime Foreman, prime Big George, and prime Grillmeister. And possibly prime "56" later this year. :D

Agree completly, both with power and grills. I bought one electric standup grill last fall and cannot wait to spring for a good weather to use it my backyard.

I agree with you. But when Foreman crushed Frazier for the title, you must remember that Frazier was thought of much like Tyson, unbeatable. Frazier had just beaten Ali and I think he took Foreman lightly. This fight, in my opinion is the only reason he's mentioned as an all time great. After beating Frazier, it was all down hill for Big George in his first career.
As for his second career, I think calling him a two time world heavyweight champion is a joke.

Its not a joke its a fact.
I think calling him a two time world heavyweight champion is a joke.
So he did not knock Michael Moorer out, and become the oldest heavyweight champion of all time?
a sentence for you:
"IT HAPPENED" a few years ago.
Why you would say: "that is a joke", is beyond boxing.

Calling Foreman a two time world champion is a joke, as so was his fight (if you can call it that) with Moorer. After losing every round he got lucky.........and that is all it was. He didn't earn that title shot (look at his record) it was a gift.
How you can't call it a joke is beyond boxing. (whatever that means)

It wasn't a lucky punch. It's not like he just closed his eyes and swung for the fences. Moorer was a good fighter in the prime of his career. If anything, it shouldn't be held against Foreman so much as Moorer.
Floydmayweather 03-09-2005, 04:52 PM There is no such thing as luck its jsut a good punch. Foreman had hell of a chin and unmatched power so who cares if he had no defense. He was a monster and all time great.

then ali landed a lucky punch to.......
there are no such things as a lucky punch in boxing
{BrownBomber} 03-09-2005, 05:55 PM His grills without a doubt!! :boxing:
joeboxer 03-09-2005, 05:58 PM He won the heavweight championship of the world twice. Tbe second time was more than 20 years after the first time. He was 45 years old. Most heavy's can't even make it to 35. He is amazing.
bobbyjones 03-09-2005, 07:29 PM also Foreman had one of the best jabs in the heavyweight division in addition to his monstrous power. Its why he was able to land on guys like frazier who honestly dodged punches pretty well.
