Wait until we get to the real story, it's only been posted by some poster from the boxrec forum. It'd be sad if it were true, Darren Sutherland has a bright future ahead of him.

My mum woke me up in to tell me, I felt like crying.

I met Sutherland at Dublin airport a year before his Olympic success, shook his hand and wished him the best. He was very gracious, very humble.

This is really upsetting news. Of all of the Olympic boxers, it was his professional run that interested me most. He seemed to me destined to do great things.

A tragic end to a talented man.

Dunno what to say. Whatever was getting to him, he took the wrong way out of it.

No sense to this at all. Take a razor and cut your forearms up or something if you've got to let it out...but not that. ****, ****, fuuuuuuuuuuck. :nonono:

i knew Darren fairly well, went to school with him 6 or so years ago, and have kept in touch with him since.... He is by far THE most dedicated, focused fella ive ever meet in my life!!
Back den he was so focused on getting his studies, the only way you cud get him to talk, was just to mention boxing lol :D He wud just light up and we wud talk and talk. How he loved Roy jones jr nd wot not

He told me how it was his plan to stick to school, get the best grades he can
After school, go back boxing, make sure he goes to the olympics, win a medal,
Turn professional win a european title.... And eventually Win a World Title!!!!

Bare in mind this was 6 years ago hes planning this! :wow: The focus and dedication he had to achieve what he has is just unreal. I believe he would have went all the way and reach his dream of a world title.
But to see how upset every1 in boxing is and how highly they thought of him http://www.boxingscene.com/?m=show&id=22233 just Sickens me.... Such a waste of talent:frown:

From the Irish herald

A terrible picture of Darren Sutherland's demons and depression emerged today.
The seemingly happy-go-lucky boxer was suffering and trying to deal with feelings of fear and abandonment before his death.
It was this fear of failure that triggered the depression which led Darren to take his own life.
On his Bebo webpage under the caption "Scared Of" he wrote: "Being a failure, don't want to live my life with regrets."
Darren's trainer, Brian Lawrence, has revealed that he had organised a meeting for Darren with a therapist on the night of his death, but it was too late.
"We thought he was okay. We knew he wasn't going to make his fight next month because he was missing training, but he was up and down and we thought he'd be okay.
"He had dinner with Frank's [Maloney, his manager] family on Saturday, and I talked to him on Sunday.
"He told me that his life was over, that he was feeling down, feeling abandoned," Brian said.
"I told him that nobody had abandoned him and that he would see a specialist with Frank the next day."
Mr Lawrence's suspicions were aroused by a conversation he had with Darren last Friday night.
"The Friday night before last he came into the gym and after training he poured his heart out to me, telling me he had lost his confidence, and all these kind of things.
"He said he was really down, felt that he wanted to pack up boxing.
"This was the first time I'd heard anything about any of this from him. But I've heard about depression since then," he said.
Mr Lawrence had seen Darren's mood go through increasingly worrying highs and lows, and change dramatically overnight. This prompted him to seek professional help for the boxer.
"I don't know if he had depression before, but if he did it was kept from us. It just happened so rapidly and it was too late for us to do something about it.
"One minute he's saying he doesn't want to box any more and then after a meeting with Frank all is well again.
"He said his head was not right and we tried to tell him to take time off, but he was so focused, when he did something he gave it 100pc."

Darren admitted in June that he was finding life as a professional boxer difficult and his absence from home in Ireland was also affecting him.
"It seems like I'm in one continuous training camp in London. Being away from home is very tough but this is a tough business and I know I have to make sacrifices to do well."
Brian Lawrence revealed that Darren had not been working with his usual intensity and enthusiasm lately.
Mr Lawrence has spoken of his deep disappointment that Sutherland's potential will never be realised.
"He would have become an outstanding World Champion and I'm just gutted.
"We were close, we were friends," he said
"I can still hear that accent in my head. I can't look at him on TV because I'll just break down."

I thought his style would have been suited to the pro game more than Degales and was looking forward to seeing him fight his way up the ranks. It is a great loss to the sport. There has been more boxers dying outside the ring recently than inside. Arguello, Gatti & Forrest all going in one month was pretty hard to take and then this! Just goes to show that anything can happen in life. I hope the anti-boxing lobby who want to wrap us all in cotton wool are paying attention!

Totally agree shame we lose such an exciting prospect & a true sportsman.
I believe he should have based himself in Ireland, its the consensus here if he went with Brian Peters would have been better till he made to the top, than being with Moloney & based in London.

I didn't really know too much about Darren Sutherland except he was a real talent and seemed like a really good genuine person. This kind of thing is so senseless and really upsets me. I really hope his family can find some way to eventually move on with their lives as hard and impossible as it may seem right now. Does anybody have a link to the documentary "Saviours", which featured Sutherland?

A year already, damn.

It was a devastating loss. And boxing wise Sutherland had real potential.

He wasn't a coward man he was a good personality to the sport .Similar to Forrest and his hands were tied so what the f--k do you know .He could have been snitched up or something man .Also look at the Gatti case .I honestly think this is could be one of the biggest robberies in the sport .I think kiindness could have been mistaken for weakness here man and we're robbed .Could be some scumbag b----s still out walking the streets .You should be getting a few red for that one man out of order.Think before you say s--t like that .Could be murder man.

A coward?

It takes some f˙cking bollocks to kill yourself. That's for sure. Is it a selfish act? Maybe. One could argue that it's very selfless. But cowardly is one of the worst words used to describe suicide. I wonder how many people so quick to brand someone a coward for taking their own life would actually have the will power to take their own.

Thanks a lot, I've been looking for that for ages!

And I don't know about the act being cowardly, maybe, but what I do know is that you have to be very desperate to actually go through with suicide and I have a hard time judging someone for that.

Agreed totally you have no right to call him a coward

I met Sutherland at Dublin airport a year before his Olympic success, shook his hand and wished him the best. He was very gracious, very humble.

This is a thread for paying to respects to a popular, talented young guy whom a lot of people loved and admired. Some in this thread met or knew Darren in some capacity - you are in no place and have no right to judge him.

You're an absolute disgrace. Filth.

That time has passed crazy quick. I can't believe it was a year ago we heard of his passing...and I still can't believe he isn't here for us to see how he would be progressing right now.
