View Full Version : Gatti: “Mayweather blew it!”
IwatchBoxing 03-04-2005, 07:44 PM Gatti vs. Mayweather implodes!
Tired of waiting for Floyd Mayweather, Jr to agree to terms for a June 11, 2005, showdown, Arturo Gatti has announced that he is no longer considering Mayweather, Jr. as an opponent for the aforementioned date, it was announced today by Main Events CEO Kathy Duva. “Promotion for this fight should’ve started a long time ago,” said Gatti. “I should’ve been in camp already preparing for it. He’s killed the whole promotion. I was happy after he resolved his legal problems and didn’t have to go to jail, but then he didn’t sign the contract. I kept waiting and waiting and extending the deadline, but it still never came. “I don’t have time for that. It’s his problem if he’s having problems with his promoter He screwed this fight up. Maybe after June 11 he’ll have his s**t together and we can try and sit down again because I want the fight. But I’ll find someone else for June 11. He can talk all he wants
hollister 03-04-2005, 07:47 PM Damn, that sucks, really wanted to see that one. Now the Gatti and Mayweather fans will go on about this forever lol
IwatchBoxing 03-04-2005, 07:47 PM but it’s his fault this fight isn’t happening.” Gatti made his decision this afternoon after Mayweather’s promoter Top Rank informed Main Events (Gatti’s promoter) that Top Rank would be unable to get Mayweather to sign a contract by the agreed upon deadline of 5:00 pm ET
So who should they fight now?
Kimmy 03-04-2005, 07:47 PM Good on Gatti, why should be follow Mayweather like a lost sheep. Gatti should go get an opponent that wants to fight!
AintGottaClue 03-04-2005, 07:50 PM im waiting for the mayweather fans to say gatti ducked him and he used his first oppurtunity to back out lol
emole123 03-04-2005, 07:52 PM If Mayweather really wanted the fight he would have signed a contract the day after his sentencing. How can you blame Gatti for not wanting to sit around and wait.
psychopath 03-04-2005, 07:55 PM Well sorry folks there goes another much anticipated fight.
What's up with that goddam deadline anyway . . . Gatti could have started training in his camp even without that contract being signed yet. If it doesn't push through then he's going to be ready fighting just anybody. I find that a lame reason to call the fight off. What's another week or two weeks extension if Gatti really wanted that fight?
emole123 03-04-2005, 08:01 PM I agree Gatti could have opened training camp which he probably has, but a PPV fight does need a pretty big time window for promotion and what not. Also, Gatti is in the position of power here and it appears he does not want to let floyd run the show. By calling it off, he is showing his power in the situation. I am very disapointed and was looking forward to this one. I just hope that if the fight is really dead, that there is top-rank opposition across the ring from Gatti on June 11.
Knicksman20 03-04-2005, 08:02 PM I think it was a money issue as to why Mayweather didn't sign yet. If he would've signed the contract, he would've have been at 1 mil reduced off his purse.
dansweeney 03-04-2005, 08:05 PM anybody who blames gatti for this is crazy, they already waited several godam months for tha idiot to clear his legal issues and then he has the balls to make gatti wait weeks after he is cleared to sign? **** Mayweather,i hope he gets freezed out of any big fights

FYI, I have a degree in Strategic Management from CSU Sacramento, and I fully understand the ins and outs of the boxing business, and i know that the entire idea of Gatti-Mayweather was a complete HOAX from day 1, anybody who believed that the fight would happen has no idea about anything about the boxing biz....
jack_the_rippuh 03-04-2005, 10:21 PM Well maybe Mayweather can beat up on Vivian Harris on June 11th..
borikua 03-04-2005, 10:31 PM Well maybe Mayweather can beat up on Vivian Harris on June 11th..
There's less money fighting Vivian than Gatti...Maybe Floyd has the RJJ syndrome..

Damn straight. Who is the draw here? How many people were at the Bruseles mauling? How many people were at the Gatti - Leija fight? Floyd may actually want the fight but he is pulling a Juan Manuel Marquez and *****ing about what he thinks he should get. The two of them are now missing out on career defining fights that would get them much more money down the road. They only see the small picture. JMM is not a fighter I would want to see against anyone except a straight ahead boxer/puncher. His televised fight after the Pac man fight was boring as hell. Floyd is much the same. Everyone knows he is an amzing boxer. But if he is so worried about money he should know his style doesn't draw the casual boxing fans who are the ones who account for most of PPV dollars. Styles make fights. And these two need someone who is aggressive to make for a good fight. Floyd should hae taken the $500,000.00 cut when they first offered it and been done with all of this.
