View Full Version : [PLEASE HELP] Most disappointing albums in hip hop history
Kobe Bryant 09-02-2009, 10:34 AM Name them.
808s & Heartbreak, ugh wtf was Ye thinking. It was executed properly. Ye had a very good 3 album streak going and ****ed it up.
Joe Budden's debut just not close to the hype.. Pump It Up was nice had a few gems on it the rest was arse.
The Dogfather nothing memorable or classic. He never sniffed at an album as good as Doggstyle.
Street's Disciple & BP2. Both legends both had great material that would have been classics on 1 disc. Much props to Pac, Biggie, and Wu for doin it right.
The Carter 3, don't know where to start. The lyricism from 2 to 3 was a steep steep drop. And I don't get it. The Drought 3 was IMO. Wonder what the **** happened.
Common that last album and most of Finding Forever. Sucks to see a legend fall off a bit.
THE REED™ 09-02-2009, 10:39 AM People have 808 and heartbreaks confused.
They say it's not real rap or hip-hop.
NO KIDDING.
It shouldnt be categorized as hip hop... I think it's a great album.. in its own right.
The problem is everyone was going into that album expecting rap, and when they didnt get it, they were let down... But its not a rap album, and it shouldnt be viewed as a rap album. I think its GREAT music... You could throw that album in the pop category if you wanted too, not sure if it should be but you get what I am saying?
808 & Heartbreaks is only a letdown if you tried to view it as hip hop... it's not.
It's just Kanye making good music, not rap.
Kobe Bryant 09-02-2009, 10:41 AM Nah it wasn't about the rapping @ all. I have an open mind if it sounds good it sounds good to you there's no disputing it. I see your point. But me not liking the album has nothing to do with the way he was going about it in terms of style.
I just think it's ass and only has a few listenable songs.
THE REED™ 09-02-2009, 10:44 AM Damn, you're crazy... but that just goes to show what personal taste is all about... I know me and texanballer listened to that album for 3 months straight.
Kobe Bryant 09-02-2009, 10:51 AM Yeah it's just bad to me. I like Heartless, Amazing, & Paranoid.
THE REED™ 09-02-2009, 10:52 AM Hov on that new ****, *****z like how come, *****z want my old ****... buy my old albums

I thought "Finding Forever" was fine just based on the strength of 4-5 songs. So Far To Go, I Want You and Turnin Me On, specifically, were top notch songs.
neils7147933 09-02-2009, 11:14 AM I think every album listed so far in this thread was indeed disappointing. Eminem's Encore could be added to the list too, maybe just because it followed one of the best albums in rap history and it had him singing, farting, a lot of stuff that was beneath him by MM LP standards. 50 Cent's "Curtis" had all this hype around it too going up against Kanye on the same weekend, and it was really really weak. Wu-Tang Forever was also quite the critical disappointment.

Yeah I was gonna throw Curtis in there. It was supposed to be a big album. But it was a let down.
I was thinking of Encore as well.
coup d'état 09-02-2009, 11:55 AM Kanye's last album was actually respectable in my opinion.
Kingdom Come was weak.
I wasn't feelin 808's and Heartbreaks...I liked it for about a week...only tracks I'll throw on now are Paranoid, Street Lights, and maybe 1 or 2 others...
I heard BP3 isn't that good...haven't heard it yet tho...that Run This Town I don't like...mainly cuz of Rihanna

Word. I thought Finding Forever was good, not Common's best but certainly better than Electric Circus.
FP559 09-02-2009, 11:41 PM Every album Nas made after Illmatic. Scratch that, every album Nas made after Illmatic, except for The Lost Tapes.
My Name Is... 09-03-2009, 12:25 AM One album that I was waiting, due to his mixtapes,DVD's he was on, radio appearances, and freestyles was.......
Cassidy's "Split Personality".....
Also "B.A.R.S.".... He had went to jail, got in a wreck and came out with the album... No where near as good as "I'ma Hustla"....
Cassidy disappoints me on so many levels..... Its weird because he is one of my favorite rappers.....
-Antonio- 09-03-2009, 02:10 AM I really liked Finding Forever actually. In fact I'm listening to it now that you mention it. It was more commercial for Common that's for sure. Other than Gladiator, I think I listened to his last album once and dropped it.
Addition 09-03-2009, 04:13 AM 808's and Heartbreaks was the ****....
Encore was definitely a huge disappointment for me.
TheCheetah 09-03-2009, 05:21 AM I liked 808's and Heartbreaks.. It's something different.
Derranged 09-03-2009, 07:12 AM Here is one, and this goes waaayyy back, but The Lost Boys Life Styles of the Rich and Shameless was it? Came out in 1996 I think. I was only 14 years old.
On that album they totally destroyed that song Renee, it was really good off the Dont Be a Menace Soundtrack. I don't know what the hell they were thinking with that beat..

Kobe Bryant 09-03-2009, 06:21 PM Rasassanation.
His lyrics were 10/10 on that album.
The Fix 09-03-2009, 06:37 PM His lyrics were 10/10 on that album.
they were solid but the beat selection was terrible. ras doesnt have an ear for beats
Uturn 09-03-2009, 07:43 PM Encore was aload of garbage, what was Em thinking? he must of been clowning around the whole time he made that album!
Encore
Kingdom Come
Curtis
Rotten Apple(couple of joints on there..but it didnt do it for me like HFM did)
SMH @ yall thinkin that 808s was a hip hop album and a disappointment. Musically speaking that album is fire...you cant think of it as a hip hop album, or its not gonna click for you. Ye was definitely on some **** when he made that..it was a great album
sisforshaq 09-03-2009, 08:23 PM I liked Kingdom Come a lot.. it kinda fell off at the end but the **** was hot to me. As far as let downs.. Curtis was a huge one for me.. the second I heard Yayo's hook on the last track I wanted to run into a school bus packed full of bricks.
:DDid anybody think that "The Massacre" was a letdown. I was hype for it when i heard it was gonna drop. Gettin ready to listen to it i was like :D then i listened to it and was all :grr:
Kobe Bryant 09-03-2009, 11:32 PM Anything Mos Def released between Black on Both Sides and Ecstatic.
Kobe Bryant 09-03-2009, 11:32 PM Also 8 Diagrams.
paulf 09-07-2009, 12:52 PM Methodman Redman's Blackout Part 2. Bad idea.
Remy Ma's album. Hyped like crazy, sucked.
Jin. That kid could battle, but man was that album terrible.
Idlewild. If you wanna call it hiphop.
One of the biggest dissappointments and Flops must def has to go to Canibus.
He came and ripped through the underground scene, crushed guest appearences with top level rappers
And starched LL Cool J, one of mainstream hiphops most vicious battlers with Second Round KO.
I was real young but EVERYBODY WAS ON HIS SACK and could wait to cop Can-I-Bus.
He releases Can-I-Bus and people get an album filled with computer nerd *****, crappy choruses and lame beats.
It was such a let down I can remember my older cousins flipping out cuz they spent their money on it.
I was too young to know wat they were talking about as I got into hip hop years later. Hearing albums like Mic Club 101 and Rip the Jacker I couldnt believe how he didnt blow up after all the hype. Then I listened to the first album and couldnt believe the trash I was hearing
Kobe Bryant 09-08-2009, 05:15 AM The lyrics weren't the problem with Canibus' album. They were actually and there are some really ill songs on that album. It just didn't flowm together.
But Canibus pre debut I'd put some money on bar for bar against anyone. That's how off the charts he was. But the debut was a disappointment.

i think Blackout 2 was pretty nice. better than most crap this year imo.

Really ill songs? Hey man I wish I could find them, they had some ok cuts on there like the one with Free but most of that album had trash like Rip Rock, I honor u with its cheesy run of the mill singing and buckingham palace.
I make this point. Every rapper wants to be like Jay-z, someone who can rock a club, the streets, and the intellect of listeners. But not everyone is versatile like that and the albums suffers when they try.
I'd rather have Nas spend a whole album rapping about some thoughtful intelledtual ***** mixed wit a lil hard then have him try to make something like Owe Me Back.
Canibus trying to hit all bases in his first album ruined his career because as good as LL's diss was, Canibus's was better but no one would give Canibus the win because his album sucked, he only went Gold, and LL dropped more hits and went multiplatinum and people viewed Canibus as a failure.
the worst part is that by the time he ditched trying to be all around in his albums and went back to those sick battle raps on BC 2000, no one bothered to give him another shot.
It killed me to see him make some trash like mind control after he dropped an underground classic like rip the jacker
since i was in that DMX thread i think his Flesh of My Flesh and And Then There Was X albums were disappointing. **** even The Great Depression was. there isnt one track on Flesh that i really liked to bang out here and there. i just thought it was really overrated. at least for me Then There Was X had two of my favorite X joints of all time. probably my top 2 in Here We Go Again and Whats My Name?. i still like to listen to those. even Depression has some tracks i like to listen to every once in awhile but not Flesh. i even like Grand Champ more than Flesh. cant comment on Year of the Dog cause i only listened to that twice at the most and lost my copy and never went to try to get it back. i know people are like wtf but this is jmo. dont get em wrong i like X.
