View Full Version : Massive riots at Reading Festival on Sunday
Iamnotausername 09-01-2009, 07:01 AM Got back yesterday from the festival and Sunday night was absolutely insane. I'm surprised there wasnt any news coverage of this
the weekend for me was spent doing the usual things that happen at a festival i.e. watching acts and getting extremely wasted in a variety of ways.
Sunday night was ****ing crazy tho. I wasnt involved in any way, I was far too stoned and E'd up to feel any ager or malice but i was watching everything that happened. People were starting massive fires and chucking gas canisters on them. Thats just the beginning. I'm gonna list everything I saw
- -People making human tunnels, with people running through them and jumping into a stream that people had been pissing and ****ting in all weekend.
- Mobs of hundreds of people going round starting huge fires, ripping up random peoples tents (stuff in there or not) to keep the flames going. There were people coming back to their tents only to find all their possessions up in flames :nonono:
-People pulling telegraph poles down
- People running naked through fires.
-People rushing the food vans.
-People Trying to grab firemen out of their vehicles to set their fuel tanks on fire. :nonono:
-One guy jumped over the fire just as a canister got exploded and needed an ambulance for the burns.
- People fighting security with metal bars and flaming torches.
-Running battles with police in full riot gear and tear gas. This happened in my camping site (Green area). I could see all the action from my tent. The police were advancing and a massive mob were chanting 'This is Sparta'. Then as the two crowds got closer, people were chanting 'Stand your ground'. Then it all went ape****. As soon as the police tried to arrest someone the mob would just rush them with anything they could find as a weapon and pull the person back. Lots of blood on the walkways the next day.
That was probably the most crazy thing i have ever seen. It was a warzone, the police and security could not control it. The fire engines and police had run out of extinguishers by 11. By around 4 they were reduced to getting bottles of water from the taps. Most of the festival security looked scared ****less. The police were never in control for one moment.
The Monk 09-01-2009, 07:09 AM My mates have just got back and have been saying the same things. The group I know who went are all West Brom fans and they said they spent all Sunday night chanting Albion songs and getting in a few scraps.

Yeah man, it was insane. I've never seen the likes of it. It was kicking off everywhere.
I do have to admit tho, the sight of big burly security guards (bouncer types), retreating rom the onslaught of mobs of floppy fringed, middle class drunken kids was quite funny.

The revenge of the posh kids eh.
I remember when I went a couple of years back and not really fitting in. A group of working class lads from b'ham next to private school kids from Kent is always going to be interesting.
Iamnotausername 09-01-2009, 08:01 AM Heres a vid of people jumping through the tent fires I found on youtube. This was about the tamest part of what went on last night.

Rocky... 09-01-2009, 09:55 AM Bunch of fcuking hippys :nonono:
beecherhq 09-01-2009, 11:59 AM I'm blacklisted from leeds festival after being thrown out for my behaviour a few years ago.The security guards they used then were absolute cunts, battered me and dumped me in a field a mile away from the festival after i'd had my photo and details taken.
AndyShitHot 09-01-2009, 03:51 PM Same thing happens every year, haven't been for a couple of years but it always used to happen when I went, I don't know why, I think people just suddenly get angry about all the money they've blown over the weekend. Pointless, i'd rather just spent my final evening just getting more drunk.

I've been 5 times now and sunday night was on a completely different level to the usual sunday night madness I've experienced there. Usually theres trouble but everyone knows theres a certain line not to cross, but no such line existed sunday. It was chaos on a massive scale.
I've read on the reading festival forums that people were being threatened with knives for their beer and drugs or just being surrounded by a mob who went about taking everything. Tents were getting slashed open to get robbed. Tents being dragged off to be thrown on the fire with people still in them. Crazy crazy stuff!
Iamnotausername 09-02-2009, 03:20 PM I suppose I should tell you about the music aswell.
In short. The Prodigy killed it. Whoever had the bright idea of putting the Arctic Monkeys above on the bill needs a kick in the nuts. Prodigy drew the biggest crowd of the whole festival. Absolute mayhem! What have the floppy haired monkeys ever done to deserve to be top? I dont blame the band, i'm sure they felt a bit uneasy about it aswell. Still it deprived everyone of hearing even more classic prodigy. Anyway, they were ridiculously good. Sound could have done with being turned up a few notches, but thats nitpicking!
Faith No More were awesome as i expected, a great privilige to see them as i thought i never would. When they were busting out the eastenders theme tune, everyone went mad. Played all the classics. Mike Patton is a nutter, but a good nutter at that! I was even more smug for the fact that most people went to see Kings of Leon and were sorely disappointed by the hissy fits they pulled. I had a great Friday singing along to an infinitely more important band:D
Deftones- Seen them lots of times and they never disappoint.
Deadmau5- Really surprised that the dance tent was so packed out for him, couldnt even get in. Nice chillaxing house to have a zoot to.
Chase & Status- Drum n bass darlings atm, played to a crazy crowd. Had to stop for 15 minutes inbetween sets cos the sounds wires kept on getting pulled out. I was in the middle of the tent and it felt like a rock gig more than a rave but i werent complainin. All the rock music seemed so slow and pedestrian after this set. Thats why i stayed in the dance tent for the rest of the evening and saw Vitalic who were the surprise of the festival. The trance, and light show was out of this world, will definitely try and see him in london somewhere.
Enter shikari- Dont really like em, but they really impressed me live. Very loud and had a crazy crowd!
Iamnotausername 09-02-2009, 03:48 PM Vid from a distance of the explosions from canisters, aerosoles and methylated spirits round the big fires. You can also see the lights wobbling from where people were tryin to bring the support poles down.

RainMatic 09-02-2009, 08:36 PM lol Leeds and Reading are for sixth formers who just started smoking weed , all sounds pathetic. I got mates who were involved in the riots in the past ****in jokers , kids just cant handle the beer. Get to a proper festival.
Savino 09-02-2009, 09:57 PM Missed out on festivals this year but they are always crazy.
Last year people were blowing up peoples tents but we got to watch metallica.
Creamfields was meant to be a diaster this year. 2 people got killed on the way and 3 people got killed on the way back. Creamfields last year was good...worked it and seen many famous people.

What in your infinite wisdom is a 'real' festival? I bet i've been to it aswell. All i said was that there riots. No need for you to step in and be a prick.:fing26:
Iamnotausername 09-03-2009, 08:11 AM OK, was just searching reading vids on youtube and saw this. What a complete nutjob!!

LOCKE 09-03-2009, 09:18 AM Man, the last time i went was 03/04 this was just as it was turning from a metal/rock festival into the indie skater boy crap you have now. Its obviously full of silly little teenie boppers who can't handle their booze, make it over 21's i say!!!

Yeah the lineup was ****! Worst choice of headliners in history. KoL headlining? Theyre ok but no where near enough clout to pull it off. Arctic monkeys over prodigy? Radiohead closing it? I dont dislike radiohead but its an incredibly depressing way to end a festival thats why i went to dance to some trance. There was hardly any heavy rock. But i was offered a pre-booked ticket back in November last year and i hadnt been since 04.
I dont get all the kiddie hate, everyone was a kid once and they have every right to enjoy a festival as much as anyone else, there were dickheads of all ages at the festival, a lot of the ringleaders of the mayhem looked quite old tbh. We were near a couple of groups of kids and they were fine. Got wasted in peace, no trouble at all. Plus i dont think people realise how crazy the kids are nowadays, from what i saw it werent the booze they couldnt handle it was more like the Class A's. I saw so many youngsters K-holed or wonkey donkeyed it was unreal! (its not my bag at all but funny watching other people on it.)

Hahaha, Prodigy was ****ing INSANE, I got like 2 rows from the front, I was wearing a HOODY, soo crampt I couldn't take it off I nearly melted. They had to go off stage half way through because people in the crowd were getting trampled, It was scary ****, I was trying my best to pick guys up but you just physically can't sometimes when thousands are pushing you.
I thought the Monkeys were bollocks, he was off his tits, but alot of bands would have been a dampner after Prodigy.
I thought Kings of Leon were good, but their attitude, ****ing wankers.
Been watching Enter Shikari since well before their first album, seen them a few times now (small venues) did NOT expect them to have such a big crowd, I was also supprised how well they did on the main stage, plus in the daylight, which isn't the same.

I was in Green which had its fair share of mayhem. Riot police and security with blood streaming down their faces, plus loads of massive fires. I watched it all at a distance from my tent. Saying that it was nowhere near as bad as yellow and purple camp. You're right they were like helmand. Never seen anything like like it. The smoke was so thick I could barely breathe so I GTFO!

yeah that smoke was seriously ****ed up. The only trouble i was involved in was some prick and about 3 of his mates ran over to our fire threw 2 aerosol cans on, one exploded in my face luckily my long hair kopped most of the burning metal. My camp then proceeded to chase them from brown to the bridge and im not going to lie any tent in my way got trampled, although it was all in vein as when we finally caught up with them the security on the bridge lost the plot and got heavey handed with us lol.
