View Full Version : Golota-Bowe II. Saddening.

Last night I rewatched the whole fight and not just the nutshots in the end.

It made me sad. When one listen to the punchy slurs coming out of Bowe's mouth I think that of all the wars Bowe was in, this was the one that did the damage.

Bowe was badly hurt in the second round and he seemed in a daze for the rest of the fight. He took and enormous amount of punches. One round he took nearly 70 according to punchstat.

The fight itself was a brutal, highly entertaining slugfest with the most peculiar ending that I've ever seen.

I wonder why Bowe's corner didn't pull him. They talked about it between the 8 and 9 I think, but that was already to late for my liking anyway. Or maybe I'm just going soft.

Probably the gamest performance of Bowe's career.

He scored a miraculous comeback knockdown in the fourth after absorbing a beating early. Golota then went back to work and it looked like Bowe was finished as he kept taking more and more punishment. He actually started landing some overhand rights which were thrown out of nowhere because he seemed completely spent, not long after Golota went crazy again and threw the infamous three punch combination below the belt.

Throughout the fight Bowe seemed weight-drained, unable to do anything except absorb punishment and throw the occasional haymaker. Golota could not deal with Bowe refusing to lay down.

For whatever reason I've always liked Golota though, not because he is crazy and controversial but because the man did have a lot of talent. It's a wonder how he never won a title in this era of heavyweights.

Surely it was one of the gamest performances from any fighter. And he kept being competitive all the way. It's just that he looks not only spent, but also concussed for most of the fight. I'm pretty sure that if the corner in any intermission from the second round on, would have asked him what town he was in or what day it was, they wouldn't have gotten any answer.

I don't know, but maybe Bowe would have been alright today if the corner had stopped the fight sooner. I'm not trying to blame someone as slugfests as this happens every year I'm just asking myself the question. Watching the fight just made me sad despite all the great action and controversy it produced.

Agreed but I don't think it was just this fight that has led to Bowe's condition today. He usually took a lot of punishment even from some mediocre fighters and the Holyfield wars must have had their part in it as well.

This fight was however likely the main reason because Bowe was not only given a beating, he was also weight-drained.

Indeed. I think Merchant said that he lost 30 lbs (?) in a short timeframe up to fight. Of course that can lead to less fluid in the brain. But going in Bowe looked in great condition.

Of course Bowe had a lot of other wars. Particularly the Holyfield fights comes to mind, but Bowe was never this far out for so long. At least not from my recollection and it's been a very long time since I watched those fights. Also a long life in boxinggyms with heated sparring-sessions take their toll.

I read somewhere that injuries to the brain gets worse when the person is concussed. Further traumas will magnify the damage and increase the risk of the injury doing permanent damage. There's little question that Bowe out of the fight mentally from the second round on IMO. The rest of the way it was pure instinct. No defense trying to block viewable punches. He only holds up his guard.

Then there's his offense that only occasionally puts punches together. He only throws those wild looping right haymakers.

Bowe started detoriating pretty badly after the first Holyfield fight in my opinion, atleast as a technician. Look at his fight against Herbie Hide for example, he has no defense and only throws wild right hands that usually missed.

He actually knocked out Hide by missing a right hand and running into Hide who went down for more than 10 seconds by the impact. The referee didn't count it as a knockdown though but Hide was finished after that.

I still can't understand what was wrong with Golota. He had the talent to do that to Riddick Bowe in two fights, only to blow both because he couldn't stop punching the guy's nuts.

Just me or did anyone else see the 2 Headbutts Bowe did prior too the Golota one in the 2nd? if only Golota could curb that red mist tho :grumble:

I didn't see anything but a blatant headbutt by Golota near the end of the round.

On a side note, if Golota had Bowes heart he could have been a special fighter. To bad the guy was a whack job.

I was stunned that fight lasted as long as it did. Golota was killin Bowe, but always punched himself out short of finishin. And Bowe had just enuf to keep himself in it, but not really enuf to win. It was nuts watchin Bowe take that beatin and not be KO'd. His corner definitely shoulda called it.

i have said many times that this fight was one of the most brutal fights in ring history, Golota had a cut just above his chin that his teeth could be seen through.. this fight finished both Bowe & Golota off as far as elite fighters go.. it a fight i have watched many times and IMO up there with the great heavyweight fights of all times

Bowe is somebody I have a hard time feeling sad for. A dirty fighter in the ring, and a bullying piece of s h i t outside of the ring. That being said at his peak he really was something.

I just rewatched this fight and can't believe how brutal it was. Bowe showed so much heart, much to his detriment, in staying in the fight when it looked like he was out on his feet. What's especially brutal about the fight is that he took so much punishment not only to his head and body but those huge punches to the groin...

Fast forward 12 years later, and Golota is still boxing and landing decent fights while Riddick Bowe is broke and selling boxing memorabilia at flee markets to make ends meet....
