View Full Version : Hagler vs Leonard - Who should have got the decision
Tha Greatest 03-03-2005, 12:45 AM This was a superfight in 1987 when Marvelous Marvin Hagler fought Sugar Ray Leonard. There's been lots of contreversy about the decision for 18 years. Who won the fight?
p.s. I know people have started this thread before but i dont remember it happening for a while and since there's been lots of new members i'm gonna start it again!
I think it was stupid, Leonard was winning because he wasn't losing, the scoring system sucks, how can they give Leonard all those rounds for not doing anything.
The Phantom Menace 03-03-2005, 12:52 AM I've watched that fight over a dozen times and have scored it myself with the ten point must system. Everytime I score it I come out with Hagler winning by 3 points. It was a close fight but Hagler won it, and a feel the judges for that fight and most of the general public were biased against Hagler because he was seen as somewhat of a villian compared to Leonard's media darling image. If you watch the fight you'll notice that Hagler is landing the solid shots while Leonard is landing glancing blows which aren't even sold punches. Hagler was also the agressor. This is one of the most infamous robberies in boxing.

definately, to win a round u have to win it convincingly, not a stupid silly flurry, those shots were not even punches, they were pats.Hagler should have 13 title defenses not 12!
PessimisticPug 03-03-2005, 12:58 AM I had gone to see this fight at a closed circuit showing in ann arbor. I havent seen the fight since my initail viewing but this was how i remember it. Hagler stalked and leonard rode his bike. Leonard was not landing the harder blows of the two but he was landing blows, and more of them for that matter. hagler had Leonard hurt it seemed on two different occasions but other than that Hagler just followed leonard around unable or unwilling to let his hands go. For this fact I saw Leonard winning the decision. To me it seemed that Hagler could not deal with leonards speed and movement. It also appeared that he was unwilling to force his way in, to properly engage the fight. Hagler suffered from what I call the greatones hesitancy. Meaning that while Hagler was a great fighter, he was hesitant to let his hands go out of fear of looking foolish or amatuerish against a speedy and elusive foe. Sometimes you must just wage yourself in and let them fly, hagler was unwilling to do this and therefore I saw him losing a close decision.............Rockin'

I totally agree. Hagler was robbed that night. Everytime Leonard would do one of his pitty pat flurries much of which landed on Hagler's gloves, the crowd would cheer in a frenzy. It seemed everyone was against Hagler because they saw him as a bad guy. Leonard got extra credit from the judges just for surviving that fight. That is all he did, survived. This fight is very disgraceful and one of the worst decisions in history.
bangbangko 03-03-2005, 01:01 AM While Leonard deserves all the credit in the world for one hell of a feat in coming back to take on Hagler...gotta say I thought Marvin should've won it. I don't think Leonard's flurries were enough to merit a win over the champion...really a shame due to the fact that the decision kinda ruined Hagler as far as his love for boxing went. Tough call man, tough call.

xrhythmxnxbluesx 03-03-2005, 01:29 AM i gave it to hagler... he was the aggressor while sugar was running away most of the time... hagler" fight me *****"... sugar "nooo"... you cant win the fight by running half the round and doing patty cake flurries on the last 30 seconds...

:biggthump It was fight time and I was sittin' on my couch, watching my favorite middleweight fight the good fight. I was sure he had just won and successfully defended his title for the 13th time. Then came the big shock. :scared: The judges gave the fight to Leonard. RIP OFF ... that's all I could think of ... RIP OFF ... W . T . F ??? :banghead: HAGLER WON THAT FIGHT :biggthump
xaviant 03-03-2005, 05:21 AM sometimes i watch this fight and it clearly looks like sugar ray...but when you watch it with the sound off and some cool reggae bumping in the background through the mist of the ganja smoke you can see clearly how hagler was robbed!!

Tha Greatest 03-03-2005, 10:40 AM Hagler
Leonard only won because of him being sugar and marvin bein Marvelous
The judges were playa hatas
Now i think of it DLH made some REALLY BAD FIGHTS,
De La Hoya-Trinidad was supposed to be fight of the millennium and the next leonard-hearns, didnt end up like it...
Hopkins-DeLaHoya was supposed to be Hagler-Leonard,...didn't seem to be like that either
Slipx 03-03-2005, 10:42 AM Hagler. for sure.
the guy was a bull in that fight, and Leonard pulled a DLH vs Tito. Hagler hands down.
if i was a judge i wouldve noticed that he was trying to exploit the judges with the flurries right before the round ends

he even admitted
he said he would steal round....not win rounds...STEAL!!
Why can't he win? cuz he can't so he steals, which means Hagler got robbed...
JOM'S 03-03-2005, 11:28 AM that was a long time ago and I am totally bias being a SGL Fan...
Sugar Ray Leonard won...
Marvin did not do enough to beat Sugar Ray, well both of them did not do enough, but SGL was the first guy to do the last sec flurry thing making
an impression on the judges for the points victory ...
IMHO Marvelous should have attacked the same way he did during the fight with "The Hitman" Hearns ...
nawfal 03-03-2005, 01:41 PM whatever sanyone says about this fight, SRL is a goddam legend
nearly a 5 year layoff, to even come that close to beating the marvelous one is a huge accomplishment.

yeah, I agree, RL did his job.
But he pulled a DLH vs Tito, and should have lost the fight because of it. He won on popularity imo- if RL wasn't a star, he would've lost the decision. Hagler, while himself a star, wasn't as bright a star as Ray Leonard was.
OliverNo1 03-06-2005, 12:15 AM Hagler won IMO - The agressor issue being the defining factor.
Leanard's punch's were like his career, all show and no substance. Then again i do hate him so im a tad biased :)
Robbery. plain and simple.
Ceratogyrus 03-06-2005, 01:53 PM I can't believe what I am hearing. Leonard took the early rounds and Hagler just didn't make up enough rounds, even though he finished strongly.
I am a huge fan of both fighters but Hagler must attract fanatics, rather than fans.
Decision 100% right.
Pinoy_Texan 03-06-2005, 02:02 PM Marvelous Hagler all the way. I guess judges just got caught up with Leonard's 10 sec flurries.
The Phantom Menace 03-06-2005, 04:10 PM Real punches versus glancing punches are what matter in my book. One solid punch is worth more to me than 100 glancing pitty pat blows. Hagler won that fight.
Simone 03-06-2005, 04:36 PM I can't believe what I am hearing. Leonard took the early rounds and Hagler just didn't make up enough rounds, even though he finished strongly.
...
Decision 100% right.
Good point! It was a pretty close fight. The statement that the decision was a robbery is bull****.
eldantestone 03-06-2005, 06:35 PM I'm a big Marvin Hagler fan, but i gotta say i believe Sugar Ray won their fight. Hagler looked old, slow and he pissed away the opening rounds. Ray did what he had to do to beat Hagler, he used effective movement and flurries to frustrate Marvelous. What, did anyone think Ray would stand and try to trade with Hagler?

Great post. This is called boxing people and Leonard clearly "OUTBOXED" Hagler. The dumbass people who want to criticize him for not standing there and getting his head handed to him need to STFU! :D
The Phantom Menace 03-06-2005, 09:22 PM Even Sugar Ray knew he lossed that's why he refused to give Hagler a rematch.
czars_salad 03-06-2005, 09:27 PM hagler, and alot of us know that the decision should have been his. leornard just flashed his way, but hagler's punches are more accurate
Keleneki 03-07-2005, 12:13 AM I have only watched this fight three times over the years because it gets me too upset that those judges gave Leonard the decision. Got to give Leonard and his team credit for setting the rules to their advantage though with the very large ring, 12 rounds, ... too bad Hagler and the Petronelli's went along with it. Too bad the fight wasn't 15 rounds, one can only imagine what would have happened then ... if I can recall correctly, after the bell rang at the end, in the 12th, Leonard collapsed from exhaustion. I still though that Hagler did more than enough to win it through 12 though. Ah, well, that's boxing. Anything can happen.
adeelr 03-07-2005, 01:26 AM Leonard knew he would not be able to survive a war with hagler, so he boxed, and started stealing rounds with flurries in the last minutes....I think he deserved the victory.
Leonard won!
...according to 2 Judges (one scored it 110-118!! ),
but the third judge was correct to my opinion:
Hagler should have gotten the decision!
But I agree with Keleneki, Hagler should not have agreed with the ring and (not to forget!) the big gloves. Also I believed he tried to prove he was better man, instead of getting the man out from moment one. We would not have had this vote today had he played his cards differently.
But surviving is not enough to win a match...Leonard was smart, very smart and got away with the belts.
How I see the fight: Hagler won..
EricOF 03-07-2005, 11:07 PM I believe Leonard landed more punches but he never seemed to hurt Hagler even a little bit (how many ever did?). Leonard landed some seriously weak punches. I'll take solid punches over razzle-dazzle bull**** every time.
Solo322 03-07-2005, 11:22 PM This whole argument about power punches vs flurries reminds me of the Johnson Tarver fight, where I thought Tarver ought to have won, and so did a lot of my friends. Tarver wasn't the aggressor, but he landed more little shots, threw more, and in the end that's what wins for me. The knockout is just a convenience. I think Sugar Ray was getting hurt a lot more than Hagler, that's for sure, but he was still fighting and landing and doing a good job. Probably closer than 110-118, but I'd still give it to Leonard
Even Sugar Ray knew he lossed that's why he refused to give Hagler a rematch.
I agree .
