View Full Version : What fight got you into Boxing?
shadymg 03-02-2005, 12:19 AM I'm sure some of you were brought up casual boxing fans, but if you're here now, something turned that casual fan in you into an obsession!!
I'll start, for me it was Julio "Cuban Lover" Garcia vs JC Candelo, on Friday Night Fights.
I'm part cuban, and when i saw my boy yolked, i thought Candelo didn't have a chance. Then he got his ass knocked out. I've yet to miss a FNF or any fight on TV since that moment :-)
The Phantom Menace 03-02-2005, 12:24 AM Thomas Hearns vs. Pipino Cuevas. This fight showed that Hearns was truly something special. No one thought he would do away with Cuevas so easily.
Slipx 03-02-2005, 12:30 AM foreman vs holyfield
Hurlex 03-02-2005, 12:37 AM I am only 19 so bare with me ok...i had seen boxing and liked it...But what made me appreciate it for the sport it is was
Mab vs Hamed and Gatti Trilogy also, the gatti/ward trilogy which by the way brought a lot of fans to boxing. Lately Hopkin as made me a fan,i never liked him but watching him grow like wine, the older he got the better he got and he wasnt all about the money at first (dlh) or played this retirement crap which some do(trinidad) so i learned to respect the man through the years... :boxing:
hellfire508 03-02-2005, 12:38 AM im only 17...but i got my hands on ALi-Frazier I and that got me hooked. What made me buy that was Balboa vs Drago... :D

shadymg 03-02-2005, 12:48 AM which cotto fight? don't take this the wrong way, but i can't recall (bad memory) a cotto fight that was awesome
adrsan84 03-02-2005, 01:03 AM I grew up watching every chavez fight and he is who got me hooked, I used to get nervous as hell when he was about to fight. Now i watch FNF's, any HBO fights, Soloboxeo on telefutura, and boxeo on telemundo every week. I think the first non Chavez fight where i realized i liked boxing and not just chavez was Arturo Gatti vs. Gabriel Ruelas. Since then ive seen so many great fights. BTW im 20 years old.

ahaha, you messing with me now? ;) Cotto-Pinto is one of my fav cotto fights, but looking back on his earlier fights, the vicoriano sosa one i thought was pretty good.
Tha Greatest 03-02-2005, 01:21 AM i first got into boxing when i saw tyson-lewis
i'm a young fan and i wasnt alive in the hearns/duran/leonard/hagler era
PessimisticPug 03-02-2005, 01:33 AM it was the little blonde haired punk with braces that sat infront of me in english class that got me into boxing. I sit down behind him and later on he turns and tells me that he was a boxer and that he could kick my ass. I begged to differ with him and he said that he would meet me at this gym, I was new to the area and school and didnt even know they had boxing around, where he was going to kick my ass. I talked my mom into driving me down there and that was it, I was hooked. Many years later this kid would be bragging that it was him that got me involved in boxing, whatever man.........
The first big fight that I watched was when Holmes wooped on Cooney somethin' bad. I just remember how my step father became so excited during the fight. hey, if he likes it than there must be something to this boxing i though to myself..........Rockin'
abdiel2k3 03-02-2005, 01:37 AM one of the first fights i remember seeing was bitter sweet
it was DLH-Trinidad

xrhythmxnxbluesx 03-02-2005, 02:33 AM i was like 5 years old... and my uncle was watching the... chavez and taylor fight... and he told me to watch with him... and since on i've been a boxing fan...
jayschre 03-02-2005, 02:38 AM My mom actually got me hooked on boxing. She was a die hard Alexis Arguello fan and we watched Arguello vs. Pryor I, and ever since I have been locked on the sweet science. Pryor made me the fan that I am today, that mofo was imo one of the most exciting fighters to ever watch. There was just no quit in him.
floigan 03-02-2005, 02:42 AM I was always a casual boxing fan, watching the big heavyweight fights, the dela hoya fights until I saw a lightweight named Shane Mosley. I don't remember who he was fighting, but when I saw him, I was like "who is this guy? How come I never heard of him before? Why isn't he being hyped like dela hoya, quartey, etc".The guy had crazy Bruce Lee like speed, power, and a fighter's spirit that only brawling club fighting level boxers had. I really started getting into Boxing since watching Mosley fight back in `96. I always said if he ever got a chance at DLH, he'd kick his ass and when there was nobody else to beat up at LW, and Stevie Johnston turned down a fight with his amateur rival, Mosley went up to 147 and made me proud on 6/17/00. That was the best night of my boxing life. My emotions were so high that night.
buff_mike10 03-02-2005, 11:26 AM When i was 4 years old Mike Tyson destroyed Michael Spinks in 91 seconds. I watched that fight a few years later and was hooked, i knew thats what i wanted to do to people.
dilivio2005 03-02-2005, 11:48 AM The tyson v holyfield second fight really got me into boxing. It was so hyped up i watched it to see wat the fuss was about and i avnt looked back.
Slipx 03-02-2005, 11:50 AM I grew up watching every chavez fight and he is who got me hooked, I used to get nervous as hell when he was about to fight. dilivio2005 03-02-2005, 12:00 PM I bet the majority of boxing fans got into the sport cos of Iron Mike.
Mr. Ryan 03-02-2005, 02:17 PM I don't really recall having one fight get me into boxing. I come from a boxing family, and was watching boxing and basketball religiously since I was young. I guess the one moment that stuck in my head was the Legendary Nights with Pryor-Arguello. I always related to Pryor, and he gave me alot of inspiration. When everyone said I was too small to be good in sports, and I started succeeding in boxing, I thought of Pryor and was like: "Yeah Mutha****a Whut!"
puppy_dogg 03-02-2005, 02:25 PM i was in to it for a while but not serious. i did'nt get hardcore about it until i saw roy jones performance against clinton woods, i was hooked after that. jones fan for life :D

jack_the_rippuh 03-02-2005, 05:48 PM After Tyson got out of jail and back into boxing, my uncle would order his fights...I seen just about all of his first few return fights, because my uncle had a cable box what got him free PPV, and we'd watch them, but the fight that really made my start liking boxing was Oscar De La Hoya vs. Julio Cesar Chavez.
mrgaribaldi 03-02-2005, 06:00 PM Anthony Logan vs Nigel Benn

AIR_KENG 03-02-2005, 10:30 PM i can't remember what that fight was but it was tyson...
xaviant 03-03-2005, 05:03 AM i have always loved boxing...i have this faint image as a child watching sugar ray leonard...i remember the afro and the trunks barely...what really got me into it was all the excitement surrounding the tyson - spinks fight....at the time i was only 9 but by judging my uncles enthusiasm i could tell this was a big deal....then later on i saw holyfield = foreman and that was it...followed ever since
ejk22 03-03-2005, 12:03 PM I was a casual boxing fan for a long time, casual meaning I got together with friends to watch big ppv's over someone's house and did not stay at home every Saturday night to watch HBO after dark. The fight that turned me into a huge fan was the first Gatti vs Ward fight. Also the fact that I no longer have hockey to watch had alot to do with it.
Truth 03-03-2005, 12:08 PM Two fights got me into boxing: Jones vs. Ruiz and De la Hoya vs. Vargas.
Sweat 03-03-2005, 12:33 PM I am very new to the sport of boxing.. I really never watch boxing when i was growing up because i thought it was boring.. Then, when I saw Pacquiao annihialtes and destroys barrera, i became obsessed.. By the way.. im only 17
DR. FREECLOUD 03-03-2005, 01:04 PM there was no single fight that turned me on to boxing. as a baby i watched it with my father and til this day we still watch all the fights together. we used to go to the forum and watch fights. i would say i was never really a casual boxing fan. i have always loved the sport.
brickhouse187 03-03-2005, 01:16 PM Gatti VS. Ward was the fight that really got me hooked on boxing.
