Beauty Pageant to Choose Miss HIV

Mon Feb 28, 8:56 AM ET

GABORONE (Reuters) - There is a catwalk banquet, hordes of journalists, traditional dancing and time-consuming hair styling -- but at Botswana's beauty pageant every competitor must be HIV (news - web sites) positive.

At a palm tree-studded resort and conference center in the capital Gaborone, 12 girls are competing this weekend for the title "Miss HIV Stigma Free."

"We are saying here we are, we are HIV positive and it doesn't mean it's the end of the line," 33 year old reigning Miss HIV Kgalalelo Ntsepe told Reuters in her cluttered one room cottage, where she displays trophies of her win in 2003.

Largest global diamond producer Botswana has one of the highest HIV rates in the world with an estimated third of the population infected.

The government is using its mineral wealth to provide life prolonging anti-retroviral drugs -- but many do not know their HIV status or are unwilling to come forward for treatment. Organizers say the pageant aims to tackle that stigma.

"After I started the medicine, I became stronger and stronger," said Ntsepe, who was diagnosed in 2001.

"We are trying to say there is life with this medication. Some don't believe I'm HIV positive because I'm so healthy," she said.

AIDS (news - web sites) groups welcome the pageant, which is sponsored by British bank Barclays. "It may just be a pageant, but it is important because it brings together people with HIV who are open about their status," said Brad Ryder, spokesman for the African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Programme.

"They need support, they need to come out and get acceptance for their condition."

WTF! This is bull****. There should be a ****ing stigma to HIV. I heard stories of people (gays) in San Fransico actually trying to become HIV positive. Cause it was "in" to have aides. They got to take the drug ****tail and get sympathy from everybody. Whats wrong with this world?

There was a documentary that aired on The Sundance Channel about guys deliberately trying to acquire the disease so that "the fear would be gone" and to get it over with, but I never got to see it. Can't even remember what it was called...

I bet some child born into AIDS in some third world country would gladly switch places with an American who doesn't have it yet, but wants to "get it over with"

As for Carnivale, it's great but don't start watching now. Go to the video store and start renting season one. If you don't watch the episodes in order, you'll be lost. It's kind of like Twin Peaks. The show's power comes from the unknown, the clues you pick up from week to week, the curiosity on how the two main characters will meet up for their inevitable battle.

You've got 20 episodes (hour each) to catch up on. It's easily the best dramatic television series I've seen...

Regular gay people must hate people like that. One of my best friends is a lesbian. I am sure she would want to kick the crap out of thoses **** if she met them.

....I tried to get into Carnivale but I just couldn't. I liked it but I couldn't follow it closely enough to know everything that was going on with the characters. I missed a couple of shows and was kind of out of the loop.

THE GIFT
directed by Louise Hogarth
YEAR
2003

62 MINS, Color

Controversial and uncompromisingly frank, Louise Hogarth's award-winning documentary looks at the alarming trend among many young gay men to actively seek infection with HIV. In revealing conversations, recently infected gay men (slangily referred to as "bug chasers" in some circles) explain the ostracism they encountered when HIV-negative, and how mixed messages found in pharmaceutical marketing actually eroticize having the deadly virus. "One of the most disturbing works I've seen in a long time" -- Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times. TVMA (AC, GL, N, SC) CCAP/Stereo
