View Full Version : Eddie Mustafa Muhammad appreciation thread
Benncollinsaad 08-22-2009, 05:24 PM I always liked Eddie "Flame" Muhammad aka Eddie Gregory. He was definitely one of the greatest light heavies ever and one of the nicest guys in boxing. He's shown considerable talents as a trainer too, taking a previously faded Iran Barkley to a points victory over Hitman Hearns and now he trains the best young lhw today, Chad Dawson. He remains a modest and generous guy. Even tho he was one of the first fighters to convert to Islam, he never used it as a gimmick or to attract attention. Thats what I really respect.

That was a great combination.:) Thanx for the video. He also had a sound chin it seems.
mickey malone 08-22-2009, 05:50 PM Good tactics from Gregory against Johnson, making him tire on the outside while cotrolling the ring center.. Defense looked a bit open though..

He was only stopped once as an old man. He had a good chin and was very talented if somewhat inconsistent at times. Against Marvin Johnson he put it all together and displayed some vicious body punching throughout the bout.

Burning Desire 08-22-2009, 06:16 PM For the last 6 months or so i've seen quite a bit of Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, and from what i've seen. He looked incredibly tough aswell as very skilled, but from what i heard he was a very lazy fighter. And i did indeed see that in some of his fights aswell, he just wouldn't let his hands ago. Still an awesome fighter but for certain is an underachiever.

EMM had all the physical attributes to be in that bracket - he could punch and take a punch, top notch skills, quick hands etc. Unfortunately he was inattentive to training and often seemed to lack motivation, hence his yo yo type career and falling short of greatness.
PED User 08-23-2009, 12:02 AM His fight with Marvin Johnson is one of my favorite displays of body punching.
Benncollinsaad 08-23-2009, 07:05 AM Some say that his fight with Spinks was controversial, the decision that is. Is that true?

EMM won the early rounds of that fight but Spinks took over from about round 7 and also got a late knockdown. I thought Spinks was the worthy winner. He was mugged against Galindez though.

I thought the decision was fine.
princemanspoper 08-24-2009, 05:32 AM No he wasn't one of the greatest light heavyweights of all time and the fact that you would make such a statement proves what a ignorant fool you are.Do the likes of Eddie Mustafa Muhammad and Matthew Saad Muhammad really rank over Roy Jones? Really do they? I would like to see a reasonable argument as to why they do actually I would like to see a good argument as to why either rank over a Jose Torres or even a Dick Tiger

Listen up boy, I don't give a **** what you think of Eddie or Matthew. The fact is-they are both recognised as legends and they made a monumental impact on the division. Together with Michael Spinks and Dwight Qawi they were the best LHW's of the late 70's and 80's.
You have to come here with your Roy Jones' and your Jose Torres' and Dick Tigers. Jose Torres? Whoever heard of him?
princemanspoper 08-24-2009, 07:10 AM Their recognised as legends by deluded fools who can't differentiate between an accomplished fighter and a exciting tv fighter.Who's Jose Torres? Good lord
How many successful title defenses did Eddie Mustafa Muhammad have?

2. But he was dethroned by Michael Spinks. MICHAEL Spinks, getit?
princemanspoper 08-24-2009, 07:21 AM So how many successful title defenses was that? You still haven't answered
Benncollinsaad 08-24-2009, 07:42 AM So how many successful title defenses was that? You still haven't answered
I said 2! Are you blind? Your Torres bloke fought at a time when the division was much weaker. The late 70's-early 80's was known as the time of the great lhws.
princemanspoper 08-24-2009, 07:45 AM Two title defenses and a legend apparently.Honestly how are these trolls even able to register for an account?

Youre a troll. Who is this Jose Torres?? You still haven't answered me what makes him so great.
And M. Saad Muhammad made 8 defenses btw.
TheGreatA 08-24-2009, 09:24 AM How many successful title defenses did Dick Tiger make at LHW? What about Jose Torres?
Benncollinsaad 08-24-2009, 09:46 AM He realized he made an ass out of himself and ran away.
Southpaw16BF 08-24-2009, 01:01 PM How many successful title defenses did Dick Tiger make at LHW? What about Jose Torres?
Tiger made two successful defences of his LHW Title against Jose Torres and Roger Rouse. Torres made 3 successful defences of his LHW Title against Wayne Thornton, Eddie Cotton, and Chic Calderwood.
Torres would lose his title to Tiger and fail in a bid to regain it in the rematch and Tiger would lose his title against Bob Foster were he was knocked out cold in the 4th round.
princemanspoper 08-25-2009, 06:22 AM How many successful title defenses did Dick Tiger make at LHW? What about Jose Torres?
I believe Tiger(the middleweight)made the very same amount as Eddie Mustafa Muhammad did and Torres made one more and neither are usually referred to as "legends"
Are you not capable of looking this up yourself? Or were you just being your usual clever self?
He realized he made an ass out of himself and ran away.
Yes because we all live on the internet,Apparently.Isn't it about time you changed your avatar again? I would suggest a Jose Torres version but apparently you've never heard of him

You obviously lack the expertise to compete with TGA or me, so I advise you not to engage in wars with us.;) I have heard of Torres. He was a solid but not spectacular fighter.

Lol,There is a little clique in this section and it pains me to say it but you are not part of it sonny jim.You have heard of Torres because I mentioned him,Not that you know anything of his career. So do not open your ignorant mouth again you dolt because to discuss a topic you must have some form of knowledge about it to discuss. Now run along and go watch hbo's 24/7 dolt

Lol! So much stupidity in such a small amount of words.:haha: I have heard of Torres because I happened to stumble upon him while browsing thru boxrec. Satisfied now, mr.smartass?

No one ever called Mustafa Muhammad a legend aside from you.
Dick Tiger is often referred to as a legend by the way but for what he did at middleweight and outside of the ring.
Jose Torres on the other hand was one of the best Puerto Rican fighters of all time.
Was Eddie Mustafa Muhammad a great light heavy? I'm not sure if I'd say that but he was a very good one.

Yeah, he coulda been a legend if he trained more. Cyberboxingzone also states that he didn't develop his potential to the maximum. Something like that. MSM was a legend however.
Benncollinsaad 08-25-2009, 09:17 AM How would you rate Qawi TGA? Was he great or just very good?

Yeah, he coulda been a legend
Backtracking now are we?

I never denied callling EMM a legend. In my view he is, not as a boxer but as a boxer&trainer. I clearly stated this in the first post.
How many successful title defenses did Dick Tiger make at LHW? What about Jose Torres?
Whoooah, to be fair Tiger who was 35/36(?) did run into a certain Mr Foster

Plus he started out as a middleweight. He was a small lighth. at 5'8.

Then again Mustafa Muhammad ran into Michael Spinks.

Yep. I wonder what would happen if Spinks and Saad fought. It's a shame the 4 greatest lhws of that time didn't all fight each other...Qawi fought Spinks and Saad but not Mustafa; Spinks fought Qawi and Mustafa but not Saad; Eddie fought Saad and Spinks but not Qawi and Saad fought Qawi and Eddie but not Spinks.
Then again Mustafa Muhammad ran into Michael Spinks.
Not arguing that or putting him down just defending Dick Tiger

I always liked Saad though I do think his corner pulled a fast one against Conteh when they filled his cut with what looked like cement!
Style of fighter he was I always thought he would be one of those that would burn out fairly early.
Certainly got your money's worth with him though.

Yep, there was never a dull fight with him around.:boxing: :)
