This movie is AMAZING. I thought it was the best martial arts movie since Enter the Dragon.

Tony Jaa is one part Bruce Lee, one part Jackie Chan (pre hollywood) and one part totally original. He is going to be a star.

I saw it last week and though I was fairly impressed I thought it was way over-hyped. Tony Jaa is definitely crazy talented, but side-by-side with Jet Li and Jackie Chan (as the movie was pitched) he certainly doesn't stand out.

Stunts: There are some Ooh's and Ahh's, but nothing genuinely clever. For the most part he uses exceptional agility to run and jump...repeatedly. There are a lot of bone-crushing stunts, but again, nothing that truely stands out.

Fighting: His speed is formidable and his aggressiveness is entertaining, but sometimes you get the imrpession that the knees and elbows style is more for visual impact, rather than physical. There are a couple parts in the movie that moves are used that appear ineffectual in nature (such as the double chicken-wing elbow lunge...thing).

Overall: I thought the overall feel of the movie was pleasing, but I had some slight problems with the plot and acting. The pacifist monk think gets dissmissed so easily after such a big point was made that he not use his skills even though he spent years mastering them. Also, Tony Jaa played the solemn badass guy so well that all the fighting became really routine and he seemed fairly listless during fight intermissions. We came to realize he was impervious and it was only a matter of knees and elbows before he stomped his aggressor and was ready for the next batch of baddies.

I can't really blame Tony Jaa for any of the shortcomings, because it could just as easily be the fault of the script and/or director. Personally, I just think that this guy has potential but it is still too early to tell.

P.S. I didn't intend for this to sound so negative, I guess I'm just playing devil's advocate to such an optimistic post. Don't take this post the wrong way - I'm glad I went to go see the movie and I enjoyed it.

Out of curiosity, did you get an import DVD or see the movie in its limited release in theaters?

I wonder how the US changed the ending and other elements of the movie to "Americanize" it. I got this DVD a few months back and remember reading that a different version would hit our big screen.

There's a thread in the other lounge about this movie, too:

I bought the DVD a few months ago. The stunts are the shiznit, and Tony Jaa sure as hell is gonna be the next asian superstar. With that said, the plot sucked ass... I bought the movie because of Tony and his crazy ass stunts and fighting scenes.

yeah i agree with that the plot did suck ass but man the kicks and elbows he does are ****in brutal not to mention that his style of muay thai kickboxing is sick as ****.if he got yen woo ping or some other top martial arts director to direct and create story plots for his movies he'd be a superstar overnight.
