View Full Version : Leaving a tip
elveiel 11-20-2004, 11:45 AM I'm unsure about leaving a tip when i eat at a restaurant, I like to be nice and give people money but on the other hand i dont see why people expect me to give money!! Some reciepts tell me to tip, if the company thinks the service deserves extra money why dont they give better wages??
If i go out and enjoy the meal and service, i normally tip well but no ones ever given me a tip in my job!! A lot of people say its unfair on the waiters/waitress' but if they wanted a better paid job then maybe they should get one!!
I'm believe its more common to tip in the US, but what happens if the service or food is bad?? Do you still tip then??
What do you guys think?
Nick54 11-20-2004, 11:57 AM If the service is bad, then dont tip.
Basically, you pay the resteraunt for the food, not for the waiters to serve you. Remember, these people get paid through tips.
The Fix 11-20-2004, 11:58 AM i think they only make minimum wage. they bust there ass to serve people and they take a lot of ****. what is a couple of dollars anyway?
SonnyG8R 11-20-2004, 12:51 PM Of course you should tip.
elveiel, you cheap bastard :p
Especially if it's a place you like and go to often.
I do think the amount of the tip depends on how good the service is.

I always give tips 15-20% even when the service is bad (I realize that I am wrong there). In most European countries the tips tend to be small (5%) and are given only when the service is really exceptional. The reason the Euro tips are small is because a separate "service fee" is automatically included in the bill, so some form of "tip" is always included.
I like the European approach better and find it more fair.

A lot of people bust there ass everyday and i dont give them money! I'll probably always tip but who tips when they go into mcdonalds?? i have never seen anyone!!

Everything in the US is so cheap!! :(

... but not a good French restaraunt :)
spinksjinx 11-20-2004, 02:59 PM I dont tip at fast food...
It varies on the waiter and the restauraunt.
If I go to my favorite restauraunts (bennigans/chilis/ringside)
Then I will to highly no matter how the waiter/ress it due to it being my favorite place and I am a usual and always get great service.
Each time upon eating their, I always have my glassed filled without asking and everything is always in perfect order...Thats why I keep coming back and I usually leave about 5 dollars for my favorite restauraunts.
Which if you think about it isnt bad, If I was to leave 10-20 percent for the final cost of my meal. I would only be giving them like a dollar (my meals run $10.60)
However if I go to a casual place to eat, I usually put a stack of ones on the table each time the waiter/ress irritate me or just isnt in good nature I will remove a dollar from the table it works and is effective...
I HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE ASK ME HOW MY FOOD IS WHEN I JUST HAD TAKEN A BITE!
jack_the_rippuh 11-20-2004, 03:12 PM Has anyone here ever walked out of a resturaunt like Deny's or something after eating and not even paid?
Nautilus 11-20-2004, 03:18 PM Has anyone here ever walked out of a resturaunt like Deny's or something after eating and not even paid?
Never happenned to me.
But I am SO absent-minded :) that I sometime forget to pay for my coffee at coffee shops. Several times I filled my coffee and then just walked out without paying.
Ranger2408 11-20-2004, 08:48 PM one of many things that are weird about the US, tipping and sales tax
GRRRR i keep forgetting and see something and i have just enough money for it, then realise i got a 6% sales tax on top of that  ahhhhh

...Unless you never plan on going back to the particular restaurant again I suggest you take proper care of your servers. That is unless you want a load thrown into your Manhatten clam chowder.

.....As someone who spent his youth as a bartender and waiter I always tip well even if I get the worse server in the world. I know how those bad days can be. When someone is really really good we take great care of them.

They dont even make mininum wage most of the time. I used to be a busser at this resteraunt. Bussers make 3.18 and hour while waiters get 2.13. Remember that next time you eat out.
Right now i deliver pizza's. I'm so sick of people not tipping when the service is great, I'm almost at the point of ****ing up there cars. I keep a knife on me when a work and it takes all of my willpower to keep me from scrathing the **** out of their car.

At my favourite restaurant i tip very well, I like to give some because i know i wouldnt like to do the job and the most favourite restaurants make my food exactly how i like it, i even tip the chef.
 They better not be dodgy with my food after i treat them so well!!
I dont think i'll tip if i dont like the service anymore, and i wont go back unless the foods great. Because i'm in sales, if i dont act nice and offer extreamly good service i know i wont sell my product and get a bonus.

I always tip the Pizza delivery guys. If delivering me a pizza at 3am sunday morning isnt worth a tip, i dont know what is!! To make it worst for them, at that time i'm always drunk after a saturday night out.

Yeah the drunk guys are the greatest!!! The only problem is they gotta tell ya a long ass story when yer trying to make money!!! :D In pizza delivery time IS money, literally. ;)
Explosivo 11-22-2004, 11:33 AM I always tip well at restarants, bars, and to pizza guys. What I am really getting sick of is that now you see a goddamn tip jar every where. At the coffe place they have a tip jar, at the mexican food place they have a tip jar, at the subshop they have a tip jar, at the ****ing dry cleaners theres a tip jar! Its ****ing rediculous! I only tip people if they are going out of there way to do something for me. I tip people for serving me, not for ringing me up and giving me food. I tip people for driving to my house, using their car and gas to give me a pizza. I dont tip people who stand behind a counter and hand me a cup of coffee. This tip jar **** is out of control. Anyone else disturbed by this new trend?

I think most people just expect you to throw change in there you don't want. Like if you get four pennies change and you don't want to deal with it you can drop it there. If they expect more than that's their problem. I tip big where it's called for because I've had my share of lousy jobs, but no way some Starbucks guy is getting 10% for pouring me a 3 dollar coffee.

I think having a jug that says TIPS across it in really big colorful letters is asking for a tip. I dont have a problem throwing a couple pennies in the give a penny, take a penny thing at the 7-11 but Im sure as hell not going to throw anything meaningful into the tip jar at the drive up window of Robertos.
Blood_Child 11-22-2004, 11:57 AM I give a 10 dollar tip to pizza guys, and 15 to nice resteraunts even if the service is crappy. 20 if it's a friend of mine lol. Are you supposed to tip at Starbucks? I never tip at Starbucks.

Well, yeah, I guess that's pretty stupid. The thing is that a lot of managers and owners at these places probably figure that letting the employees put out a tip jar is a helluva lot easier than paying them something close to a living wage. The goodwill they get for this gesture probably makes most of the employees forget that they're working at lousy jobs for terrible pay.

Ok, but my point is that they do not deserve a tip. If they want tips, they should be doing something that merits a tip. While we are on the subject of people not deserving a tip, what about these bathroom attendants? You have to pay these guys a dollars just so you can wash your hands after taking a piss. WTF is up with that!!

Sure, point taken. Tips are a huge political issue in some places. When I worked as a cook in one place there was tons of animosity towards the waiters and waitresses about them getting tips. Never mind that they have to deal with the public which is reason alone for them to get tips. People just like to complain about whatever station they're in in life.
jabsRstiff 11-22-2004, 12:37 PM Tipping, tipping well.....is what ADULTS do.
If the service blows, I give them 15%. If it's excellent...they get far more.
You should just accept tipping as part of the cost of being out, & being served.

i always tipped well because i thought it was the right thing to do but after some consideration i'm not going to tip for terrible service, its just telling them that its ok to give bad service.
I get the impression its a little different in the US, our food is a lot more exensive and it sounds like UK staff get paid more because of it.
Bombardier 11-22-2004, 01:27 PM Tipping in the U.K. and the rest of Europe is way different than it is here in North America (Canada and the U.S. follow the same rules). Here there are no service charges or anything else that would qualify as an automatic tip. In the areas I visited in Europe you'd give them your spare change, or a bit more if the service was really good. Seems like the U.K. is sort of in the middle ground here, though wherever I went there nobody seemed like they ever expected a tip.

I was eating out and the waitress passed me the bill on a plate, i paid with card and she took the plate and card with her, she realised the mistake and came back and put the plate on the table. She even told us she was hoping for a tip!!!
I give her very good tip for having the cheek to come back and ask for one, at least she was honest!! And you say UK staff dont expect it :D

Funny story...I'm glad you rewarded her honesty. At least when people are honest you know where they're coming from.
Anyway, I was just touring the U.K., so everything I say is highly subjective anyway  .

Im telling you right now. If you ever order out you better damn well tip because they keep track of those things. I've seen guys spit in Pizza's and everything.
Xecutioner 11-22-2004, 07:44 PM if its a spot that you go to often tip all the time and tip well. eventually they'll make it up to you with free food here and there and perks. i always chill at a casino restaurant/bar, i tipped well for a while and now most of the time i eat there for free.
if its a spot youre just passing by and dont plan on visiting multiple times, leave a standard tip .

I know, a lot of my mates worked at a fast food joint that was on TV. They had a under cover reporter work there and they all got caught spitting in burgers etc, one guys spat in every burger he sold!!
Service and food are important whilst eating out, if either are bad then i wont tip or go back again.
Mr. Ryan 11-23-2004, 11:47 AM I'll tell you straight up, tipping is essential. I was a waiter in Hoboken and used to get 20 bucks a shift. I depended on tips to make my money. If people didn't tip, the next time they came in I spit in their food.
jabsRstiff 11-23-2004, 11:50 AM If you have a problem with tipping, stick to fast food or prepare your own meals.

Mr. Ryan 11-23-2004, 11:53 AM I'll be perfectly honest with you, I've never worked in a clean restaurant. You would be shocked at the crazy **** going on there. Once it was busy so I brought the water glasses down to put in the dish washer. I put the hood down and when I opened it up, there was a dead rat on the glasses. My little brother dropped a whole can of parmesan cheese on the floor and swept it up with a broom and dust pan and put it back in the container. Beware!

Why should anyone pay an idiot for being rude and messing your order up?? I tip everyone who's does their job well, i give more tips than anyone i know, i even people who's job dont expect tips. I also give to charity all the time but thats all because they deserve it, idiots who act rude and annoy me should get a left hook and not a tip.
If you cant be nice and get orders right then dont work restaurant! Why should customers who enjoy eating out suffer because they dont like paying rude people for serving them??
Like i have said before, i work for bank selling finance, if i dont act nice, i dont get paid bonus!! I earn good money because i treat people with respect and i know how to do my job well.
Mr. Ryan 11-23-2004, 12:33 PM Why should anyone pay an idiot for being rude and messing your order up??
Because your health is very much at risk if you don't.

who do you buy pizzas from? what restaurants do you eat at? can i be your friend?
