View Full Version : thomas hearns beats ray robinson at welterweight....
billionaire 08-18-2009, 09:08 PM thomas hearns would have been the greatest welter ever if not for the ray leonard loss, and he was still up on rounds....thomas hearns at welterweight is the best boxer/puncher ive ever seen...its a complete myth he didnt perform in big fights just because he lost to leonard and hearns, he ko'd cuevas one of the best kos ever, and trashed duran....i personally think ray leonard was a smarter fighter than robinson, robinson would probably need 5 fights to get the edge on hearns...how many tall fighters like hearns did srr fight? were any of them one shot killers?
take the prime robinson vs prime hearns at 147 hearns wins...
Gettin Jiggy 08-18-2009, 09:12 PM robinson was one of the hardest punchers, ever and easily had enough power to KO Hearns at ww. he either get to him late or ko him's mid rounds!

Hearns is one of my five favorite fighters of all time, and I couldn't sleep the nights he lost to Leonard, Hagler and Barkley, but I don't see him beating Robinson.

Hearns is my favorite fighter for all the reasons you've mentioned, but Robinson himself was also a 'one shot killer' with a better chin than Tommy, so I'd give him 1 chance out of 3 to beat Ray at 147.... 154 would have been very interesting.. Hearns was awesome at light middle..

Ha ha, Thomas Hearns wasn't actually beaten by himself!
As for a Ray Robinson matchup, true Robinson may well have lost. Hearns was simply magnificent at welter. But if I was a betting man I'd favour Robinson to take a late stoppage just as Leonard did.....he may have been behind at the time though!
Joe2608 08-19-2009, 02:42 PM I'd favour Robinson for a late round KO.
mrboxer 08-19-2009, 03:45 PM hearns is not even in the to 20 of best welterweights,he has a glass jaw and his stamina his poor,he has a good right hand has he demonstrated with the enialtion of cuevas and the almost beheading of duran, but when he fought talent as in leonard and hagler he seemed afraid,i would have to consider hearns for a promotion to the top 10:boxing:

If he's not in the top 20 WW's, who do you have in your top 20?
boxingbuff 08-19-2009, 04:45 PM What are you sniffing?
Did you ever see the SRR who fought at welterweight?
I believe he was 126-1 at welterweight!!
Slimey Limey 08-19-2009, 04:57 PM BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SUGAR GAY ROBINSON LOSE??????????
Indeed he would beat the overrated Salty GAY Robinson. His skills are overrated as well as his opponents. A Hearns would be unlike anything Gay had ever faced, and Hearns already dealt with Gay's type of fighters.
Slimey Limey 08-19-2009, 04:59 PM Did you ever see the SRR who fought at welterweight?
I recall seeing him nearly get knocked out by an Italian brawler.
Plus there is not much footage of a WW Gay and he is much more significant at higher weights.

I know there is no film of SRR at welterweight. I was waiting to see what he said.
EVERYBODY who saw SRR at welterweight said he was much better than at Middleweight!
You said you recal seeing him "nearly" get knocked out....I "Did see" Hearns getting KO'd.
Are ALL of the pfp list wrong? I NEVER saw a pfp list with Hearns ahead of SRR.
If Thomas Hearns even dreams of beating SRR,he should wake up and apalogize.

No proof no argument for you lad. It's like describing in vivid detail on how Harry Greb would beat somebody.
And what do p4p lists have to do with Hearns giving Gay brain damage?

his middleweight accomplishments are maybe more famous, but his true prime was as a WW, in my opinion he was already a great before he went to MW, his work at MW was what lifted him from great to the greatest ever.
princemanspoper 08-19-2009, 08:01 PM Unfortunately such debates never produce solid and credible arguments due to wannabe boxing historians who have never even seen Robinsons career at 147 picking Robinson due to historical preference alone.
Those whom would pick Hearns and present a credible argument are usually dismissed by true noobs who think they are real boxing fans by picking Robinson in the first place.
Those who would pick Robinson against the likes of Ray Leonard and Thomas hearns usually do so by presenting flattering qoutes used by Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns in regards to how they match up against Robinson,Apparently a fighter is not able to even pay respect to those of the past without it being used against them by a bunch of delusional fanboys.
That said Thomas Hearns was black,Thomas Hearns was great. All the basis for Ray Robinson to avoid ever such a fight with him

Where is YOUR proof lad?
What do pfp lists have to do with it? It means EVERYBODY that saw both Hearns and SRR at welterweight believe SRR was better and would have beat weak-chinned Thommy.
Stoppage 08-20-2009, 05:15 PM Even though Hearns has incredible punches, I still think Ray Robinson would win this. In my mind, he wins by some form of knockout.
hearns is not even in the to 20 of best welterweights,he has a glass jaw and his stamina his poor,he has a good right hand has he demonstrated with the enialtion of cuevas and the almost beheading of duran, but when he fought talent as in leonard and hagler he seemed afraid,i would have to consider hearns for a promotion to the top 10:boxing:
Go on I'm in, name those 20 welterweights above Hearns please?
Both great fighters, both have one shot power, one has a great chin one doesn't, one is one of the great welters one is the greatest welter.
JAB5239 08-20-2009, 06:51 PM Go on I'm in, name those 20 welterweights above Hearns please?
Lol, I'd be interested in seeing this list too.
Lol, I'd be interested in seeing this list too.
It does seem to be a feature of this fight that people do sort of overshoot with their sweeping statements.
ZZZzzz....... 08-20-2009, 10:19 PM i can just picture ray knocking hearns head into the third row...........
Silencers 08-20-2009, 10:48 PM Robinson by knockout. Hearns might build an early lead but once he starts slowing down, he's going to get hit by some big shots and I doubt he can stand up to them.
KILLA RIGHT 08-21-2009, 05:07 PM Never seen him at ww of course but from what i seen at middle i say ray by ko. Left hook catches hearns when he misses that monster right. JESUS can u imagine how good he was if he was better at middle
AKATheMack 08-21-2009, 05:17 PM I admittedly havent seen a great deal of SRR fights, but I have watched what I could find. I believe he is a great fighter, and possibly deserves the title of best P4P ever. I have seen plenty of Hearns fights tho, and I know he is a great boxer with definite one-punch KO power. To not give Hearns at least a good chance against ANY WW in the history of the sport is ridiculous.

A good chance but not a probable chance. If they fight 5 times,Hearns might win one.

My philosophy is that any ATG is, on any given night, capable of beating any other ATG in a one off fight barring some prohibitive style matchup such as Foreman versus short-armed pressure fighters. When I'm comparing fighters and I say so-and-so beats so-and-so I'm presuming a series of fights between them, taking the results of the series, and distilling it down to one fight.

Hearns would have a chance against any fighter in history from welter right up until light heavy in my mind, which is a testemant to how great a fighter he was.
But I can't see him beating SRR.
RightCross94 08-22-2009, 07:12 PM Hearns would start fast, and maybe lead as far as into the championship rounds (13, 14, 15) but he is going to slow down and get hit, and with Robinson coming on strong in the later rounds, landing power punches, Tommy is going to crumble and get stopped.

do people realize that the leonard fight was the only welter fight hearns faded in, it was also the longest he went....leonards face was all swole up from hearns jab, its pure speculation as to if robinson could do the same as leonard...
TheGreatA 08-22-2009, 08:22 PM Hearns didn't look too great in the late rounds against Randy Shields either but he did manage to win by TKO:

I don't however buy that Hearns was necessarily "chinny". He was completely spent by the time Leonard stopped him in the 14th round.
Robinson usually did well against the taller opponents that he fought. As an example the very underrated "Sugar" George Costner was over 6 feet tall, 147 lbs and had wins over many great fighters. Robinson twice knocked him out in the very first round.
A picture of George Costner:

California Jackie Wilson and Kid Gavilan were both 5'11, as tall as Robinson.

Top rated middleweight contender Ray Barnes seemed as tall or taller than Robinson but Ray outboxed him to win a 10 round decision:

MarkScott 08-22-2009, 09:00 PM Hearns is my favorite welter and would have a great chance vs SRR. too bad his chin sometimes failed him.

Slimey Limey, dude you sound like a dam fool who knows nothing about boxing. More like Slim Shady can't rap but rather use profanity. Robinson would have knocked Hearns out before the 4th round. I get sick and tired of so many young kids that think they know it all. Sugar Ray Robinson is the greatest of all times and Hearns would have lost against Kid Gavilan, Tommy Bell and so many other fighters. Stick to being slimy and keep your thoughts inside your tight little head fool!!!!!!!
