View Full Version : Generally speaking, are mma fans the dumbest of all sports fans?
Lucky Charms 08-17-2009, 11:12 PM I myself am a fan of mma. And I'm not saying all mma fans are idiots, because there are plenty of intelligent fans of the sport. I'm speaking more of the Tapout and Afflction wearing crowd. I thought freestyle motocross took the cake (which I'm also a fan of), but after attending a few UFC events and other mma events, the people just seem... dumb. They seem to like the violence and "newness" of mma more than the skill and dedication involved. And most have no interest in sportsmanship.

Although that might be true I would argue that MMA has some of the most spiritual and intelligent fight fans. Lots of MAs are about mind as well as body, more so than boxing.
MindBat 08-18-2009, 05:52 AM I'm guessing a large group comes straight from the pro wrestling crowd.
khepesh 08-18-2009, 05:55 AM It's Mixed Martial Arts, and when I think Martial Arts these four things are the first to come in my mind: dedication, self-discipline, honor and respect. Those who don't understand these can't be considered as martial arts fans, but just fans of a violent sport.
Stab Judah 08-18-2009, 07:53 AM Read a few threads in the nonstop boxing section :lol1:
Combat sports fans just tend to be bandwagon jumpers and 'know it alls' so it can sometimes come off as stupidity.
JoeKickAss 08-18-2009, 08:17 AM The Tapout and Affliction crowd....yes very dumb. I have some good friends that belong to that and I never watch any event with them or discuss MMA with them.
Phenomkidd 08-18-2009, 09:17 AM I would think NASCAR fans based purely on the stereotypical crowd (even though generalizing is dumb itself). But I know some intelligent Nascar fans.
GroundSt.Pound 08-18-2009, 11:39 AM The Tapout and Affliction crowd are dumb, but these idiots pay the way to the sport.
The ones who care about the honor and discipline aren't as plentiful.
I agree.
But what annoys me is boxing fans think every fan of MMA is like those idiots that wear tapout.

nah man. It's the idiots who need an excuse to spend money on shirts. Pro-wrestling fans at least have a working knowledge of the sport.
And really, if we ridicule pro wrestling fans, the hardcore themselves would need to pack it up if they watched Pancrase/RINGS/UWFi. Those were legit pro wrestling leagues.
fallenloki 08-18-2009, 12:35 PM Pacquiao fans. Pound for Pound the worst.
Napalm Death 08-18-2009, 12:47 PM no. its hard enough trying to pronounce sme of these japanese/korean/chinese names.

Then I guess 90% of the people who buy UFC ppvs and go to UFC events are not MMA fans?
In Japan the crowd always seems educated and doesn't have heart attacks when the fight goes to the ground.

No.
By those who don't understand I meant the people that will never get that, and they are the people who just want to see the other guy's face get completely smashed. Imo, this sport doesn't need those, they are bad for it.
Of course some of the uneducated fans learn through the sport what's it really about martial arts while they watch it and see true class-acts. The best thing for commentators to do is that when they see a class-act, they also inform that to the people (like I have heard i.e. Goldberg doing in the UFC) and why it is like that.
Martial Arts are originally from east so that's very obvious that people in Japan are more educated, it's in their culture.
Iron Stig 08-18-2009, 05:00 PM Most casual MMA fans are very ignorant but like to act like they know what they are talking about. So in most cases you will meet someone who claims he has MMA knowledge only to tell you the most ridiculous stuff. If someone tells you Brock will beat Fedor, that's an immediate ignorant retard there. However, there are many hardcores fans of the sport that know about all the details of the fight game. They are just hard to find because the just bleed guy takes all the attention.
