View Full Version : To be a Legend in MMA do you have to become UFC CHAMPION?
Gettin Jiggy 08-16-2009, 04:33 PM Do you think you have to win the UFC WORLD TITLE to become a legend in mma? If John Fitch or Keith Jardine never win the title in ufc, but continue to beat legends and get some good wins, do you think they will become a legend? or do they have to get the belt!
NeXt In Line 08-16-2009, 08:41 PM Well I don't know if they'll be considered legends, because it's extremely rare for "legendary" fighters to have not held a title. I suppose they could, but at the same time I don't exactly see how a person who is hailed as a "legendary" fighter couldn't have held the title unless they were totally screwed out of a title shot or totally screwed by judges.

Spot on.
:chomp:
Gettin Jiggy 08-16-2009, 09:07 PM Any more. Would like to hear of the likes of Jakkups, Wandereli Silva(Poster), Organik.
Kakutogi-Gumi 08-17-2009, 12:29 AM Nope.
Akira Maeda and Sakuraba never touched UFC gold.
jakkups 08-17-2009, 12:44 AM Wanderlei Silva is without doubt a legend and never wore a UFC strap. Fedor is another who established himself as a legend without even setting foot in the UFC. Also Dan Henderson is one too IMO.
I mean do you have to win the WBA or WBC versions of boxing titles in order to be considered a true champion? If you win the IBF or WBO or any other minor bodies strap does that mean you're inferior to the other title holders? I don't think so. That's like saying that Griffin and Evans are legends just because they held the UFC belt and Wand and Henderson aren't because they didn't. But when you compare all four of those guys it's quite obvious who has the credentials to qualify for legendary status and who doesn't.
Belts don't make the fighter, the fighter makes the belt.
DeltaSigChi4 08-17-2009, 02:32 AM Hickson Gracie never held UFC® gold therefore everyone knows he was a bum.
Fedor = bum
Et cetera.

phallus 08-17-2009, 09:32 PM nah, the guys i think of as living legends / all time greats came out of pride - hendo, sakuraba, big Nog. it doesn't matter what hendo does in the UFC, he's already an all time great
Iron Stig 08-18-2009, 05:17 PM Fedor > UFC
Caesar 08-18-2009, 05:23 PM if everybody see that they want to be legends and work and train hard, they will be also legends in the future, also when they haven't got a title
Gettin Jiggy 08-18-2009, 06:17 PM Does anyone think Keith Jardine is a Legend of MMA? Holds wins over Vera, Griffin, and Liddel. Has never avoided no one, has main evented 2 UFC Cards. And always gave his best.
I personaly do.........

Far from it. I'd call him a fringe contender.
That's not meant as a knock on Jardine, but he is certainly not an elite (as in truly elite, legend material) fighter.
Left2theliver 08-19-2009, 03:32 AM Rumina Sato, TK Kosaka, Hayato Sakurai never got a ufc title but are all legends

Moonwolf and Mach are definitely legends, TK isn't IMO.
Norifumi "KID" Yamamoto would be in with a shout.
