View Full Version : Best champions with the WORST chins!
Kimmy 02-26-2005, 06:59 PM Fighters who were really good, world class and proved it by winning championships but had the weakest of chins. There aren`t that many and i don`t want to include WBO champs as that isn`t really an authentic championship ( sorry Tommy Morrison! ).
Floyd Patterson springs to mind, Micheal Moorer also a heavyweight with weak whiskers! Diego Corrales is a modern day weak chinned champ!
Any more that you can think of?
Lennox Lewis comes to mind
Roy Jones JR
Corey Spinks
Wladimir Klitschko
Michael Grant
Tito Gets knocked down, but I wouldn't say he had a bad chin as such.
Zab has to be the king in this thread though.
Slipx 02-26-2005, 07:50 PM seldon, leonspinks, coryspinks, michaelspinks, tyson,l ewis, wladimir, joe louis, max schmeling, john l. sullivan just to name a few off the top of my head
TyrantT316 02-26-2005, 07:52 PM Zab...lol
he is such a target right now...
Mosley can punch, DLH may have some more power at 147 (not for sure though), Cintron can punch, Kostya can move up and punch, Cotto can move up and punch, Mayorga can punch, Margarito can punch...
Zab is in a world of hurt unless he can stay diciplined and not get hit cleanly
Slipx 02-26-2005, 07:54 PM I think Zab would punk all of those people,(especially mosely and dlh) except for Mayorga, Margarito, and Kostya.
czars_salad 02-26-2005, 08:10 PM trinidad came to my mind immediately.
knocked down alot of times which makes me wonder how was he able to pull those fights in his favor...
TheGreat1 02-26-2005, 08:12 PM i would have to say Hearns, great fighter, i didn't think his chin was all that great
Slipx 02-26-2005, 08:24 PM damnit i forgot about hearns :)
{BrownBomber} 02-26-2005, 08:26 PM i would have to say Hearns, great fighter, i didn't think his chin was all that great
Hearns!! beat me to it.
Tha Greatest 02-26-2005, 08:35 PM Thomas Hearns
Lennox Lewis
RJJ
I dont care if Hearns had a glass chin he is still my favorite!!
He made up for it with his heart. Long live the hitman!
Lennox Lewis avenged those losses, and Rahman didn't land just any shot any him.
I dont know, RJJ was takin a **** load of shots in the johnson fight so im not gonna base my opinion on that, but from the Tarver it seemd he didnt have a good chin.
The Phantom Menace 02-26-2005, 08:39 PM Thomas Hearns, Roy Jones Jr., Mark Breland
czars_salad 02-26-2005, 08:41 PM Thomas Hearns
Lennox Lewis
RJJ
lennox lewis? i don't understand
Tha Greatest 02-26-2005, 08:46 PM lennox lewis? i don't understand
didnt u read wat it said under it
Kimmy 02-26-2005, 08:49 PM Lennox had a weak chin, its just that he was rarely hit so no one saw how weak it was.
lennox lewis did not have a weak chin...i think some of u need to slip in that vitali vs lewis tape...hate vitali all u want but his huge ass can hit hard..and lewis took em and came back
Tha Greatest 02-26-2005, 09:51 PM lennox lewis did not have a weak chin...i think some of u need to slip in that vitali vs lewis tape...hate vitali all u want but his huge ass can hit hard..and lewis took em and came back
ya i know
he bas a decent chin
his talents make up for it
vargas was a champion so no one say he has a weak chin cause he dont he took some big shots
wmute 02-26-2005, 10:39 PM roy jones junior
buff_mike10 02-27-2005, 11:10 PM Tommy Morrison, Razor Ruddock said he hit harder than Tyson. He has a mean left hook, but a serious glass jaw, and now aids.
Super_Lightweight 02-27-2005, 11:43 PM Please. RJJ's chin was not "weak" by any means. He took a huge ass shot from Tarver got up, and took MANY shots from Johnson before caving in.
You don't even consider the fact that RJJ started at 154. If his chin was so weak he would have went down or got dazed from the shots landed earlier in his career. He didn't dodge all of them.
Solo322 02-27-2005, 11:43 PM trinidad came to my mind immediately.
knocked down alot of times which makes me wonder how was he able to pull those fights in his favor...
tito is always on his front foot and i think that's why his balance is bad. Foreman always talks about how he's "on the mark" like a track runner and so a hook knocks him to the side way too much.
AintGottaClue 02-27-2005, 11:45 PM tito has been on the floor 9 times, 8 of those tim,es he has gotten up and won. bad chin? no way most if nto all were flash knockdowns
WikipediaAntonio 06-01-2005, 03:29 PM Patterson, Joe Louis, my favorite fighter of all time named Wilfredo Gomez, Felix Trinidad, Fernando Vargas, Bobo Olson, Roger Mayweather, Thomas Hearns, Sugar Ray Leonard on hs later stages, Primo Carnera, Michael Carbajal, Muhammad Ali, Pernell Whitaker, Lennox Lewis come to mind.
Even other greats such as Oscar De La Hoya, Aaron Pryor, Mike Tyson and Mark Breland have been known at one time or another for having suspicious chins.
Howard Davis Jr. was a great boxer, but not a champion so he cant be mentioned hehehe.
Antonio
WikipediaAntonio 06-01-2005, 03:33 PM AIDS is a terrible thing to have and has nothing to do with his boxing career.
Other than that, right on the point!
Sincerely ,
Antonio
!! Mr. Soprano 06-01-2005, 03:34 PM How come no one said Ruiz yet?
Eric Persson 06-01-2005, 03:35 PM Doublepost.

Muhammad Ali? You want to stir **** up in here mate?
RoyJonesJrp4pno1 06-01-2005, 03:36 PM I think Zab would punk all of those people,(especially mosely and dlh) except for Mayorga, Margarito, and Kostya.
Shane and Oscar would knock Zab out badly.

Mike tyson has a really really really good chin. That ridiculous to say he does not. See buster douglas fight the holyfield fight the lewis fight the ruddock II fight.
Champions with bad chin
Roy Jones Jr (horrendous)
Zab Judah (horrendous)
Thomas Hearns
Joe Frazier (had a bad chin in a way. he got knocked down alot but always recovered really fast so he had a bad chin from a perspective.
Lennox Lewis I dont think had a great chin
Wlad Klistchko (horrendous)
Michael Moorer (But he did like Frazier recover good from knockdowns but not as good as Frazier)
!! Mr. Soprano 06-01-2005, 03:43 PM How come no one said Ruiz yet?
Oops, I take it back..
The Thread Title says "Best champions with the WORST chins!
Ruiz is not a 'Best champion' I wonder if he is a champion at all, or just a very lucky boxer
Bad Intentions 06-01-2005, 03:45 PM seldon, leonspinks, coryspinks, michaelspinks, tyson,l ewis, wladimir, joe louis, max schmeling, john l. sullivan just to name a few off the top of my head
Tyson? He has never been KOed with one punch, he takes ass whoopins b4 he goes down,
jack_the_rippuh 06-01-2005, 04:16 PM Julian Jackson also had a suspect chin.
Kimmy 06-01-2005, 04:24 PM Oops, I take it back..

Cleverly spotted. Ruiz isn`t a good champion so he isn`t included in this thread!
My five(off the top of my head):
1)The Spinks family
2)Wlad
3)Hearns
4)Judah
5)Cintron
BadMagick 06-01-2005, 05:56 PM tito has been on the floor 9 times, 8 of those tim,es he has gotten up and won. bad chin? no way most if nto all were flash knockdowns
Well, the ninth one certainly wasn't. I think we all remember him not getting up when Hopkins put him down.
Is Cory related to Michael and Leon? How is he? I never even thought of that, for some reason.
Normally I'd say something about Roy's chin, but I'll skip, and go to Antonio, who said Ali had a bad chin.
If Ali had a bad chin, who had a good one? Ali had one of the best chins in heavyweight history.
Memorex 06-01-2005, 05:59 PM Judah-corrales-tito- And To Make Some People A Lil Angry Roy Jones Lol
SUPER ZAB FAN 06-01-2005, 06:44 PM Yes Cory is the son of Michael Spinks .
Julian Jackson also had a suspect chin.
If Julian Jackson would have had just a decent Chin he would have been one of the greatest champions of all time...the guy is the best puncher I have ever seen, literally dynamite in his fists...
I have heard a lot of names like Morrison, Hearns, Oscar, Tito, Breland etc...none of them even come close to the beard that Jackson had, he could swing and miss and he would hurt you and his opponent could swing and miss and all of a sudden Jackson is all ****ed up...greatest single puncher I have ever seen, by far the worst chin I have ever seen too.
WikipediaAntonio 06-01-2005, 08:34 PM Well, I had Ali both on the best chins of all time based on the facts that he took punches by Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, and Liston and was never floored.
I also put him in the list of worst chins because, although some may think this is double-standard, he still fell to the floor against lesser people such as Frazier (slightly lesser), and SPECIALLY, Henry Cooper (''Our Ol Enry'' was a great puncher but not in Ali's class), Sonny Banks (definitely not in Ali's class), and Chuck Wepner (tough, brave, not in Ali's class).
I should give him credit for taking Earnie Shavers and Bob Foster's punches also through. In Foster's particular case, even through most of his knockouts were at Light Heavy, even a Heavyweight, slow version of him would scare me!!!
Sincerely yours,
Antonio
kapersky 06-01-2005, 10:30 PM tyson a great champion.. but i am not sure if it was because of his chin or lacking of will and heart.. he did came up from knock down but never recovered and came back to win so..
Kimmy 06-01-2005, 11:03 PM Yes Cory is the son of Michael Spinks .
Cory is the son of Leon Spinks, not Michael!
Kid Achilles 06-02-2005, 11:18 AM Someone here said Schmeling. Are you nuts? Schmeling took a tremendous battering by Max Baer, THE BIGGEST puncher in his day, and still ended the fight on his feet. Louis knocked him out in one round, but most of the damage was done by body shots that broke Max's vertebrae. Schmeling had an above average heavyweight chin.
WikipediaAntonio 06-03-2005, 04:26 AM trinidad came to my mind immediately.
knocked down alot of times which makes me wonder how was he able to pull those fights in his favor...
He pulled the fights on talent, punch and BRAVERY.
Antonio
YoungTurk 06-03-2005, 06:29 AM I don't equate "bad chin" to meaning necessarily that someone gets knocked out alot. It is more how much they are knocked down. Tito has a fairly bad chin. He has some will to make him get back up though. Kendall Holt has a bad chin, not a champion but I saw him recently. He would be a good fighter if his chin were better.
Tommy Hearns has one of the worst chins. Yikes, you just know watching his fights that he'll get knocked around like crazy. Corrales and Forrest come to mind as well. Probably because they're of similar body type to Hearns.
Rovers 06-03-2005, 09:21 AM any one who gets hit by another heavyweigt clean is bound to get hurt .
Tha Greatest 06-03-2005, 09:27 AM Well, I had Ali both on the best chins of all time based on the facts that he took punches by Frazier, Foreman, Holmes, and Liston and was never floored.

I don't get it..
Ali has one of the best chins? Also, one of the worse chins?
Its annoyin when someone says someone else has a glass chin cuz they got knocked down once or twice in their whole career
You talkin like Frazier is some bum off the street...
Frazier is one of the hardest punchers ever and I don't care how hard of a chin you got, that left hook he landed on Ali would've knocked ANYBODY down...
Martin (Top Knowledge) 06-03-2005, 09:31 AM quickly off the top of my head I would say:
Wladimir Klitschko
Zab Judah
RJJ
Yeah these three... Zab Judah is gonna get tagged again when he steps up the competition.
RJJ has shown in his last couple of fights that if you can land on him he'll drop like a sack of patatos.
Wladimir Klitschko - It's funny becuase his brother seems to be able to take a shot alright?... :dunno:
Saldy 06-03-2005, 11:28 AM I believe that Terry Norris should occupy "first place" in this category. I just cannot recall but he had some fights where he was clearly dominating but was KOd after receiving a nice shot to the chin.
TyrantT316 06-03-2005, 01:06 PM Tito, I think just has balance issues
{BrownBomber} 06-03-2005, 01:30 PM didnt read all the post but did anyone mention Terry Norris?
Man this guy had the best offense ive ever seen, one of my favorite fighters. To bad he had no chin.
