View Full Version : Who is the better commentator - Emanuel Steward or Roy Jones
Tha Greatest 02-26-2005, 04:42 PM Who is the better commentator
Legendary trainer Emanuel Steward or Roy Jones Jr.
I'd have to go with Emanuel Steward because he is way more intelligent then Roy Jones.
Roy Jones gets REALLY annoying sometimes
Super_Lightweight 02-26-2005, 04:50 PM I'd have to go with Emanuel Steward because he is way more intelligent then Roy Jones.
:p
That was funny. You actually think Steward would beat Roy in an I.Q. test if they were to take one side-by-side? Doubt it.
Roy has made many intelligent and correct points in fights, about the fight itself, whether you like him or not. If I had to I'd bet that half the people or more who make posts like this one didn't like Roy before he was a commentator.
Roy has as much to offer about fights as Manny does from a technical standpoint, and Manny is not immune to bias himself...watch the Jirov-Toney fight again, boy.
Round 12 especially.
enadeus 02-26-2005, 05:05 PM Worst thread ever. Who in their right mind would pick roy jones over emanuel steward.
The Fix 02-26-2005, 05:09 PM manny steward is the better commentator but i dont know if he is more intelligent than roy jones, roy jones is a pretty smart buisnessman. he always would get the maximum reward for a minimal risk, imo that is pretty smart.
Super_Lightweight 02-26-2005, 05:09 PM Plenty of people, maybe you should reverse that question Mr. Crazy.
The Phantom Menace 02-26-2005, 06:03 PM Emanuel Steward is much better by far. There is no comparison. Roy Jones always ends up talking about himself.
ELPacman 02-26-2005, 06:09 PM Ya know this question actually depends. Manny does usually commentate based on how a trainer would give advice to his fighter while Roy bases what he would do. So from a technical standpoint I'd choose Manny though I chose Roy because sometimes he throws in comments that unless your a boxer, you wouldn't know. Plus if I had to choose between Roy or George, I'd definitely choose Roy because George will discuss a simple issue for like 3 minutes. "And then, and then, *ding* -round finished-, yeah I'll finishing saying what I was saying in the next round".
ottoevans 02-26-2005, 06:45 PM i dont like stewards voice he sounds like a annoying troll
I think Emanuel Steward is far more credible, and entertaining as an announcer. He has years of boxing experience as a trainer, and has been with the best. RJJ is a fighter,
so you might hear:
"how many pro fights has steward won?" etc.
does not change the fact that if he were not RJJ, he would lack the necessary credibility to be an announcer.
Kimmy 02-26-2005, 06:53 PM I think there about even on boxing input. Jones is more entertaining i feel but one think pisses me off about Steward and thats everytime he is commentating he always says 'if i were training him...' every two minutes he always says how he would sort the fighter out! Now, fair play, he is a trainer and thats his job but the rate at which he goes on about how he would slove all the fighters problems is a annoying and ego - centric!

not to argue with you:
But Roy Jones says the stupidest things I have ever heard from an announcer. not to mention, he is the most EGOCENTRIC person to ever sit in an HBO booth. Its all about Roy.
Slipx 02-26-2005, 07:01 PM I would prefer Emmanuel Steward simply because he has trained so many world champions, and watched many more sparring sessions and many more fights than Jones has. I guess it's about intelligence to a certain extent, but more than all complete experience about the sport is the largest asset, and then after that comes how you perform in front of the camera. I'd have to go with Steward for sure, but I do like Jones as a commentator, and loved him as a fighter, so don't take this the wrong way. I have more respect for Roy Jones than I do for the pope.
but look
IMO Teddy Atlas is a better commentator than Steward or Jones, he says it like it is, and what he did with Michael Moorer in that Holyfield bout was just truly legendary. I remember when Mike was getting slapped around and he went back to his corner, and Ted was giving him hell. Yelling, but motivating.
I remember this great quote,I think it was in the 10th round or maybe the 9th, Teddy said "Michael, there comes a time in every man's life..when he has to make a decision..if he's going to live, survive, or win. You are just surviving right now, your doing just enough to keep him off you, and that's not good enough in this lifetime." Steward would never fathom saying something so great, although I have all the respect in the world for Steward, I prefer Atlas's commentation.
I think Merchant, Lampley, Atlas, Steward, and Jones or Foreman would be some of the greatest commentation to ever grace the sport. Steward's voice cracks me up :)
Kimmy 02-26-2005, 07:02 PM True, but Roy was a league better than 99% of the fighters he commentated over! Not a justification but remember Sean O`Grady?

how could I forget O'Grady, his knockout percentage was insane when he was fresh

Shaolin Bushido 02-26-2005, 08:09 PM Emmanuel Stewart by far. Anyone choosing Roy is nuthugging.
jones knows more cuz he is a boxer
Tha Greatest 02-26-2005, 08:25 PM Emmanuel Stewart by far. Anyone choosing Roy is nuthugging.
that's not true
im goin to emanuels gym next year but i'd have to pick roy jones sometimes, but Roy gets a lil annoyin sometimes
during the last hopkins fight he was just running his mouth and u couldnt understand him
I think they should mix it up
like one day Foreman, one day RJJ, one day Manny
Torino 02-27-2005, 03:23 AM They both suck. Bring back Big George
xrhythmxnxbluesx 02-27-2005, 03:35 AM they should have atlas to go on hbo... that'll be good... but for manny and jones... i say manny by a technical trainer's point... and jones by a boxer's point of view...
