Its all what you like. some people like italian, some people like chinese. its all what your ear find delicious. Honestly, I don't think anyones opinion is really better than anyone elses. I use to believe that for example, a rappers opinion was better than a fans opinion. But after re-thinking it, its still only their opinion, and its still bias filled....and reflects thier tastes. I think everybodys opinions are equal and should be respected.

So if someone like versitale says Illmatic isn't a classic to him, thats cool with me. Its his opinion, and only his opinion. I have my opinion, but I don't think my opinion is better than his. We all have different brains and percieve things differently.

Even when ranking rappers, I'm tired of trying to be politically correct amongst hip hop fans. I know from politically correct perspective Jay-Z is not the greatest rapper of all time. There are rappers who are more lyrical than him on many occassions. But for me to Nas or 2-Pac over him on MY list seems phony to me. Jay-Z is my favorite rapper of all time, so he is MY G.O.A.T. If Nas or 2-Pac was MY G.O.A.T., I would listen to them more than Jay-Z...and I don't. To me there is no such thing as personal greatest lists, more so, personal FAVORITE lists. I feel stupid making a list putting KRS-One top 5, when I barley listen to him. But I was doing that to be politcally correct amongst hip hop fans. I understand that KRS-One is a legend, but hes not one of MY greatest. Perhaps he will be one day because I have gotten into him recently. MY list is not the right list, its all just my tastes. Just as someone elses list is their taste.

To me the only way to find the true G.O.A.T. from a univeral perspective would be to every person in the entire world(who listens to hip hop) take a poll....and whoever wins that poll is the G.O.A.T. But even then its just the opinion of the large majority, still not a fact. The truth, nothing in music is really a fact, its all just what you like. So eat your cheeseburger, I prefer pasta...thank you. :haha:

at the end of the day, believe what you want and enjoy the genre.

You can still form valid and strong opinions on who is more skilled though. For instance who can rock multiple flows, who has a wider variety of vocabulary, who can write different types of songs, who has a strong voice, who has a more consistent catalog, etc.

Because I think Jim Jones last two albums are better than what Cam's albums have been lately. But if I ranked rappers I would definitely put Cam ahead of him skill wise. Because Cam even on his latest albums can flow and be more creative with the ryhmes.

What you said makes total sense its all about preference. I don't think anyone can even debate that. Jay-Z historically is top 5 no doubt, but me personally I don't have him has my top 5 favorite. I can rank him accordingly in his proper place. So I think you can still like an artist but rank him where he truly belongs objectively.

Oh I'm not advocating not arguing. Argue all you want, for many this is fun(even for me sometimes). All I'm saying is, you just have to be honest with yourself. If rakim(example) is the best to you, but you know others are better in certain areas....don't say Rakim isn't your greatest when you know damn well to you he is for you.

all i'm saying is we all have what we like and we should be proud of are opinions.

but why is he top 5 no doubt, who says? isnt that just an opinion that was created by some? is it really something you believe? If you did believe that, wouldn't that make him better than some you have top in your top 5 favorites? And if he is better to you, than why don't you like him more?

lol this is a confusing matter

It's all about objectivity. And how much of it you have to a certain extent. I have the type where if you deserve your due than you deserve it. Jay is top 5 because of flow, success, longevity, lyrics, etc.

Only in hip hop they care about the goat. Also there should never be a list of anything then because we could never have a goat in any sport or anything because it's all opinion.listen to what you like like you said but people could have opinions on whos the best but we will never know because it's not a fact. Just like most of us think mj is the goat but it's not a fact

Well continuing with the food analogy, a random guy cooking in his kitchen is different from a professional chef. Cooking is an art like Hip Hop, it has an elite.

I think there is already a well understood difference between a favorites list and a greatest list.

I don't have a problem putting someone higher on a list if i have alot of respect for them but I don't listen to them as much as another guy.

How many people here listen to Beyonce and Alicia Keyes more than Aretha Franklyn? Now how many people here actually believe that Beyonce or Alicia Keyes can sing even remotely as well as Aretha Franklyn?

That aint a matter of opinion, i'll listen to someone say Jay is better than Rakim before i'll listen to something like that lol.
