I like the fact that that 5 of our 9 centrobasket golds where won in Mexico....

But seriously I think we will take this Fiba Americas for our 4th gold.

O yeah we sent our B team to play 2 friendlies against Venezuela in Isla Margarita and they came with a 1-1 record winning the first game 85-80 and losing the second 62-44.

Now we will play the dominicans at Dominican Republic with almost our complete team minus Our center Peter John Ramos who is at the doctors getting checked.

Hey that's wahy it was a surprise. I know PR is good in b-ball, that's why it was great to see the little guys from Mexico hustling out there.

Any time Mexico can beat PR in basketball or baseball it's great because those are sports Mexico doesn't really excell at....

Actually, Mexico has a very big pro baseball league. The thing is, the best athletes in Mexico play soccer, not baseball. Even though there have been very good and there are very good Mexican players in the majors.

In the Caribbean World Series, Mexico actually has like 5 titles, so we don't do to bad......:boxing:

For me Romel Beck is already better than Najera.

Puerto Rico played the Tuto Marchand Cup with an incomplete team and the results are as follows:

vs Canada W 60-55
vs Brazil L 70-80
vs Argentina W 67-55

Their final roster

PG Carlos Arroyo, Filiberto Rivera, Christian Dalmau
SG Elias "Larry" Ayuso, Guillermo Diaz
SF Carmelo Lee, AD Vasallo
PF Angelo Reyes*, Ricky Sanchez
C Peter John Ramos, Daniel Santiago, Luis Villafañe

*Alex Falcon will substitute Reyes if he doesnt recover from an injury. Im happy with this selection, though Id rather that instead of bringing old Dalmau, we would give Mike Rosario a chance, or Pellot(if its Pellot then force him to pass cause he sucked in the TutoMarchand Cup)

Najera and Watson wont be playing for team Mexico:nonono:

After holding a glimmer of hope that Eduardo Nájera may don the green and red for Mexico, that hope crashed when the NBA ruled that it wasn’t in their best interest.

Najera was unable to receive clearance from his NBA club, the New Jersey Nets, to play in the tournament. The Nets invoked their right to refuse Najera because he had not fully recovered from an injury, a hernia surgery he had back in March.

NBA guard Earl Watson will also miss the tournament after failing to obtain the right papers in time.

Without Najera and Watson, the Mexican National Team will reply on a frontcourt featuring veteran center Horacio Llama and Lorenzo Mata-Real, coupled with the scoring of Romel Beck and . Well, that’s if Beck and company aren’t suspended after their fight with Uruguay on Saturday.

2009 FIBA Americas Championship Preview

Event: 2009 Americas Championships
Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico
Discuss: Americas Championships Thread
Info: The tournament will determine which four teams qualify for the 2010 FIBA World Championships of Basketball.

The tournament will feature ten teams from Northern and Latin Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Panama, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The favorites coming into the tournament is a solid Brazil team and the experienced Argentinians.

Brazil dominated the Tuto Marchand Cup with great efficiency with even contributions from Leandro Barbosa and Marcelo Machado in the backcourt, and Anderson Varejão and Tiago Splitter in the frontcourt.

Despite 2007 Americas MVP Luis Scola down low, Argentina didn’t fare as well in the Marchand Cup (0-3), but were without the services of Pablo Prigioni, who will join the team and run the point.

With Prigioni, Scola, as well as Federico Kammerichs and Leonardo Gutiérrez, team Argentina is still a power even without Manu Ginobili, Andres Nocioni, Carlos Delfino, and Fabricio Oberto.

The unproven Dominican Republic team have looked great in preparation games and is the dark horse of the tournament. The team maybe the best team RD has ever assembled and features three current NBA players in Francisco García, Al Horford, and Charlie Villanueva.

The three top contenders for gold, Argentina, Brazil and the Dominican Republic, will all compete in a very difficult Group B. The other two teams are Panama, who is no slouch either and Venezuela.

In Group A, look for Puerto Rico to give out a good fight, especially playing at home, with veteran mainstays Larry Ayuso, Carlos Arroyo, and Daniel Santiago.

Canada will compete with swingmen Carl English, Andy Rautins with NBA player Joel Anthony in the middle. The other three teams are Uruguay, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Mexico without Eduardo Najera.

The United States will not send a team to the tournament after receiving an automatic bid to the World Championships by winning the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The United States won the 2007 Americas Championship held in Las Vegas by going undefeated in their ten games. The USA was led by Carmelo Anthony’s 21.3 points and LeBron James‘ all-around game and blistering 76% from the field (73-96 FG). Argentina captured the silver medal, and Puerto Rico defeated Brazil for the bronze medal.

This year’s Championships will feature several other high profile players including Romel Beck (Mexico), Esteban Batista (Uruguay), Luis Flores (Dominican Republic), Levon Kendall (Canada), Héctor Romero (Venezuela), and Óscar Torres (Venezuela).

Puerto Rico is finally showing their potential even though there is still more to improve. After beating the always tough and good, Canada, they are in a good position to qualify for Turkey 2010. A couple of wins should get them a pass, but I want a medal and I think they should be in the final against Brazil, whose frontline is very powerful.
