Manny running out of sparmates
By Joaquin Henson
The Philippine Star 02/25/2005
LOS ANGELES–Trainer Freddie Roach isn’t finding it easy to sign up sparmates willing to slug it out with two-time world boxing champion Manny Pacquiao who’s ticketed for at least 70 more rounds in the gym before facing Erik Morales in Las Vegas on March 19.
Roach said the other day Pacquiao has already logged about 70 rounds of sparring with the likes of Justin Juuko, Raymundo (Sugar Ray) Beltran, Javier Garcia, Maikito Martinez and Israel Vasquez at the Wild Card gym. The sparring partners are paid an average of $500 a week to box three to six rounds with Pacquiao every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
"Some of the guys are getting banged up bad and I’m not sure how long they’ll last," said Roach. "Manny hits too hard but he’s too nice a guy to finish them off. Pretty soon, I might have to replace Justin who’s really beat up. I need a lot more fresh guys to keep Manny busy."
An army of new sparmates is being lined up by Roach. Oscar Salido, who lost to Juan Manuel Marquez on points last September, was supposed to spar with Pacquiao the other day but failed to show up because of visa problems. He’s still in Roach’s wish list.
Rudy Hernandez is expected to report for duty Saturday in his first crack at Pacquiao.
But the sparmate whom Roach is eagerly awaiting is lanky Nedal Hussein, the Australian of Lebanese descent who floored Pacquiao once but lost on cuts in a brawl in Antipolo in October 2000.
"I was told Hussein has agreed to spar with Manny since he’ll be in Los Angeles anyway with his brother who’s booked for a fight," said Roach. "He’ll be a good sparmate because he fights like Morales and he’s tall and long-armed, too."
Roach said Pacquiao’s weekly sparring program stipulates eight rounds for Tuesday, 10 for Thursday and 12 for Saturday.
But the other day, Pacquiao added two more rounds to his regimen as he blasted Martinez, Beltran and Juuko in succession. Watching Pacquiao maul the sparmates one after the other were World Boxing Council No. 2 flyweight Brian Viloria, Roach’s new discovery 6-1 former Olympic lightmiddleweight Vanes Martirosyan of Armenia, manager Shelly Finkel’s lawyer Keith Davidson and former world titlist Bobby Chacon, among others.
Pacquiao looked like a panther in the ring, measuring his prey then darting in to land vicious combinations to the head and body. The footwork was superb. The timing was perfect. He seemed comfortable throwing the right like his left and dazzled the crowd in the gym with blinding handspeed and a wide variety of punches–crosses, hooks, uppercuts, jabs and straights.
Pacquiao started the first round against each sparmate working on his defense, moving his head away from punches, ducking, slipping, sliding from side to side, doing some rope-a-dope, parrying and spinning. Then, he concentrated on offense, unraveling a fearsome arsenal of punches.
"No problem with Manny’s stamina," said Roach. "This is the longest preparation time for him. He’ll be ready for Morales. From now until the day we wind up sparring, I want him to focus on body shots. I want Manny to break down the body. He’s getting better and better by the day. He runs every morning, even in the rain. I’m hoping he doesn’t catch a cold."
Martinez, who went two rounds with Pacquiao, said there’s no doubt in his mind who’ll win on March 19.
"I’ve sparred with Erik and now with Manny," said Martinez in Spanish, translated by his trainer Alex Martinez. "Erik’s my friend and we’re both Mexicans but I think Manny will knock him out. Manny’s too fast for Erik and hits too hard. He’s also difficult to hit. Erik has problems with southpaws. Early in his career, he should’ve lost to a southpaw but the judges gave him the decision."
Another sparmate Beltran also said Pacquiao will win by knockout. "Manny can knock out Morales in any round," said Beltran who was born in Mexican and has lived in the US since he was nine. "Manny’s too good. He has great legs and power. He moves in and out and puts a lot of pressure on you. Morales has slowed down and that was obvious in his last three fights."

Marjoh 02-24-2005, 08:58 PM $500? Unless you have a decent insurance, forget it. Even so, your rate would fly up. :D

Did you photoshop those Pac-Morales pics?

not only did he slow down, but his punching power has soften. against hernandez (am i correct - the last fight before barrera?), he was not able to knock out the smaller fighter. not only does he (morales) lacks speed, but also power.

Fugde!!!! You guys are making me hope he wears the wrong socks again.
Super_Lightweight 02-24-2005, 09:44 PM Well this story offers nothing but hope and confidence to Pac fans, and that's what I am. I thoroughly expect Morales to get beat down, big time.
Pacman < Barerra < Morales
See the math here? I know I know, styles make fights...exactly why Morales is going down, quick.
Slipx 02-24-2005, 10:01 PM im not a huge pac fan like other people here, but I appreciate the article. I knew pac worked over his sparring partners the first time I watched him fight, an aggressive guy like that has to spar like that
+k to you kadyo
jack_the_rippuh 02-24-2005, 10:07 PM The guy is a beast...he reminds me of me.

GOOD POST BRO THANXZ :D :)

Seems like a marketing ploy to me. Erik has problems with southpaws??? thats utter BS his hardest fights have been against orthodox fighters.
As he said he's knocked out almost every southpaw he's faced.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 02-24-2005, 10:54 PM BTW if they truely expect Morales at his best like Roach said they should know body attack isnt going to break Morales down.
mic573 02-24-2005, 11:10 PM Like I said before you shouldn't really rely on training stories. Both fighters can knockout every sparring partner put in front of them but sparring partners are rarely better than the fighter they will be facing in the ring.
Super_Lightweight 02-24-2005, 11:16 PM Actually I was kinf of looking at it like Pac eats MAB who eats EM. But your way also does the trick, buddy.
BTW if they truely expect Morales at his best like Roach said they should know body attack isnt going to break Morales down.
That's utter BS. Morales can be broken down by a body attack, just like anyone, it just has to be good enough.
You'll see.
.::|ULTIMATE|::. 02-24-2005, 11:18 PM Actually I was kinf of looking at it like Pac eats MAB who eats EM. But your way also does the trick, buddy.

You'll see.
You said it yourself it just has to be good enough. No fighter in the lower weights goes to the body like Barrera, and in the first fight he couldnt do it what makes you think Pacquiao will be able to.
Super_Lightweight 02-24-2005, 11:28 PM The body attack certainly helped MAB beat Morales but his body atack wasn't non stop. I'm talking a body attack like Mike McCallum. Obviously it would have to be a very good body attack.
In any case, I have to agree that Manny won't win on a body attack, but I'm just saying that any fighter can be beatdown to the body.
I just think Pacquiao's gonna **** up Morales' face, not really his body.
;) :boxing:
Floydmayweather 02-25-2005, 01:05 AM He does not have to kill him completely to the body just slow him down which Barrera did. Pac hits harder and is faster than Barrera so if he goes to the body it will take its toll. Then in late rounds Pac and try and go for the kill.
How many times has Erik been knocked out in the past?
None.
How many times has manny been knocked out?
twice.
We already knows who has a better chin. In my opinion, its open for debate as to who hits harder. Morales has ten times the jab Manny has.
In my opinion, Erik morales has fought and knocked out better opposition than Pacman has.

that's right! the main objective of their training is to condition their self to the fight. sparring partners are different to the one who will be his opponent in the ring. training stories are different, locations of their trainings are different same as the fighter!dedication and dicipline of a fighter is important.

i don't think so,maybe the brand of his brief designed to that kind of cut. i hope manny didn't wear it wrong. is it a $1 kind of brief? maybe not...joke only!

You shouldn't base his knockout losses that happened 9 and 6 years ago. Boxers can take punches different at different weights. Look at Mayorga  It seems Manny takes a punch better at the higher weight though this is also due to his better conditioning nowadays and actually being better prepared. If you actually know the story about his knockouts, you wouldn't take them as serious because it's as you would say, Barrera had an off night due to all the issues. Well Manny had issues also, he dehydrated himself to death. I also think the sparmates are garbage for the most part and are just to get you back into the boxing groove. Look at the Marquez spar videos, he looked exactly the same, yet he didnt' do that vs Marquez. Not to mention Manny puts on a good show for the crowd so those guys are really just there to take a big beating. I hope he can do that to Morales though :boxing:
AIR_KENG 02-25-2005, 10:55 AM i'm not placing much hype on the statements made by these mediocre sparmates... i'll wait for the sparring session with nedal and salido to at least make a long-shot prediction...
Super_Lightweight 02-25-2005, 11:02 AM All the things people are saying about Morales and his skill they said vs Barrera, and did it matter? No. Of course Morales could win this fight but he is slower now and his bean-pole ass ain't hard to hit at all.
AIR_KENG 02-25-2005, 11:07 AM can't really base upcoming fights on their previous fights... manny is not barrera... barrera is not erik... so we really can't say that manny beats the guy that barrera beat twice... hmmm... i don't sound like myself, hehe...
Super_Lightweight 02-25-2005, 11:14 AM Actually, yes I can. Styles make fights, and that's why Manny's beating of MAB is important, not just because of some dumb equation that pac is better than MAB is better than EM.
It's the WAY MAB beat EM. He outboxed him, but most importantly, he oitbrawled him, and if Barrera can do it, bet your ass that Pac can do it.
I'm not saying he will, and I'm not guarenteeing anything, but there is no reason to favor Morales over Pac in this fight in my opinion, and we'll see who's right when the fight comes along.

What's your point. How many time has Barrera been knocked out prior to the Morales fight? None. How many times had JMM been down 3 times in round 1? None. So what's your point?
People act like Morales couldn't be put down like he's freeeging superman. It's as simple as this. If he's been stunned, he can get hurt. And if he can get hurt, he can go down. Period.
The fact that Erik has fought and brought down better opposition isn't even up for debate.

barrera put morales down in the 1st fight and came close
to getting a possible ko.
then he hurt morales pretty bad in the 3rd too.
pac can and hopefully will ko em.
also em has stamina problems as of late

That was not a legitimate knockdown in that first fight. Morales can beat Pac but he has to fight for it and judging from the third Barrera fight it doesn't look like he wants to fight that kind of fight anymore. Before I was leaning towards Morales right now I'm leaning more towards Pacquiao. It should be a good fight either way it goes and it will be a decision no one will get stopped.

trying to keep the debates to a minimum..
didnt help that much lol.
anyways yeah i think morales can and will win.
maybe not a legit kd but he looked gassed.
and also he doesnt seem to want to dig deep.
well not in his last fight anyway
just more theories and hopes :D

i feel sorry for morales for the non-credits he get. it was just that barrera fight that did it for him.
i'm a filipino and of course i'll be rooting for our man. but to be honest with you guys, of all the mexican fighters manny fought, or will be fighting, its morales that i admire the most.

Shut up, angry Morales fires back at Pacquiao

ERIK Morales yesterday lost his cool after US media, awed at Manny Pacquiao's blinding speed in the gym, wondered how the Mexican icon would be able to handle the Filipino firebrand who has vowed to "come out like a gun."
Miffed, Morales advised Pacquiao to keep his mouth in check and let their fists do the talking on March 19 when they clash at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
"Pacquiao es libre de hacer las declaraciones que crea convenientes... Yo s¢lo me limitar‚ a realizar mi trabajo (Pacquiao is free to make the declarations in his illusions... I will only do my work)," said Morales, who indicated it is far easier to talk than walk the talk.
"I will put in his mouth all his words come fight night," Morales added, confident in his training conducted at the Otomi Mountains in Mexico located 3,500 meters above sea level.
Supervised by his father and mentor, Jose "Olivaritos" Morales, the battle-scarred Mexican popularly known as El Terible bared
that he was in the toughest stage of his back-breaking preparation. Morales runs 12 kilometers in the morning (in approximately one hour and five minutes), and continues his training in the afternoon at a gymnasium where he is assisted by southpaw sparmates who try to mimic Pacquiao's fierce fighting style.
Morales had earlier belittled Pacquiao as a one-dimensional fighter who could not adapt to situations.
An underdog at the betting lines in Las Vegas, Morales however sought an interview with Mexican media to unleash his most torrid verbal assault after he was portrayed as Pacquiao's next victim who will suffer the same fate as Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Meanwhile, old foe Nedal Hussein is expected to spar with Pacquiao soon to give the Filipino southpaw variety in his gym work.
Reports coming out of the Wild Card Gym indicate there has been a short supply of partners for Pacquiao after trainer Freddie Roach had to sideline a number of sparmates for them to recuperate.

Morales actually said:

As someone in another forum posted if they chopped up that sentenced up like that i can only imagine how wrong the rest is as well.

What i mean is the actual words of exactly what he quoted in the article are incorrect.
What he quoted actually says "Pacquiao is free to make any declarations he feels convenient, they will not limit me from doing my work."
NOT: "Pacquiao is free to make the declarations in his illusions" as the author put it. It was in no way confronting, venting or belittling in any way as the author put it.

limitar = limit and not illusion. I don't know but the author is a respected pinoy journalist who prolly doesn't know spanish. He must have quoted the translation from someone who wants to manipulate the media. :)

HayeFan 02-26-2005, 07:51 AM It's not looking good for Morales.
As far as Manny's losses go, I used to think it was only a matter of time before past weaknesses resurfaced ... until I saw them.
Manny wasn't 'Manny' in those fights. The shots Manny took in the 5th against Marquez were a thousand times better than the shots that landed him defeat, yet all Marquez's fire did was enrage Manny and send him into a flurried attack of his own.
Morales is a longtime badass, I hope he takes it, I really do.
It just aint looking good.
kadyo 03-01-2005, 08:31 AM MANNY PACQUIAO AKA THE HOTTEST FIGHTER TODAY
By Pedro fernandez
Judging from the response his appearance caused this past Sunday on “Ring Talk Radio,” I’d be hard pressed to find a fighter hotter than current World featherweight king Manny Pacquiao. And even though “Pac-Man” is the Muhammad Ali of Philippine boxing, I’ve come to realize that his fan base is not relegated to his native country as his having the #1 website among boxers clearly illustrates that “Pac-Man” fever is international!
CHAMPION READIES SELF FOR LAS VEGAS PPV SHOW
This is the first of a series of articles we will be doing on Manny Pacquiao as he enters uncharted waters come March 19. Uncharted waters? That’s right, seeing Manny will ascend four pounds from the featherweight limit of 126 lbs. to 130, all to engage former champion Erik “El Terrible” Morales in an HBO Pay Per View presentation emanating from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Having visited Pacquiao (Pak-yow) last week as he prepares for Morales at Freddie Roach’s “Wildcard Gym” in Hollywood, CA, I came away having learned a few things about the man boxing fans call “Pac-Man!”
MORE TOOLS THAN JUST THE WICKED LEFT!
Pacquiao is “not” one-dimensional. Having believed that that the Filipino had lived entirely off his sometimes lightning-like southpaw left crosses and leads, Manny seemingly went to work on top-notch sparring partner “Sugar Ray” Beltran in an attempt to prove me wrong. Speaking of Beltran, his professional log that stands 16-2 with 8 KO’s. The Mexican living in Phoenix has been active with four wins in 2004, with the last coming in December when he posted a Unanimous Decision in six.
BELTRAN AN “EL TERRIBLE” CLONE OF SORTS
An Orthodox (right handed) fighter who at 5’8 mirrors Erik Morales in both height and physical stature, Beltran was for the better part of his career a member of the famed Kronk Boxing Gym in Detroit, MI. Realizing his job was to get Manny in shape, Beltran told me he wasn’t giving Manny a free ride. “Pacquiao needs me to be at my best. I came here in shape and have been sparring hard with him. We have great respect for each other, but when we spar things can get a little crazy. Freddie (Roach) doesn’t let it go too out of hand.”
“PAC-MAN” MANIA LIKE TAKES OVER HOLLYWOOD!
After both Pacquiao and Beltran shook out and stretched, the pair shadowboxed for four heats to warm up. At that point, out came the gloves, headgear, and the Vaseline! Wearing blue shoes embroidered with “Pac” & “Man” on opposite sides, the crowd of better than 150 consisted mostly of those afflicted with “Pac-Man” fever, and “Wildcard Gym” members. Beltran and Pacquiao touch gloves and the gym fight is on!
BOTH MEN KNOW THEIR OBJECTIVES!
From the beginning of these three-minute sessions of battle, the strategy of both men was clear. For Beltran, he knew that Pacquiao would be coming at him hard. “Manny is real strong early. Stronger than anybody around our weight,” said the 23-year old who also competes at 130 lbs. “Manny will come hard and I’ve got to do the same to keep him off. To keep my elbows in tight, especially the left as Manny likes to come with the southpaw (right) hook to the body.”
WATCHING THE “ROACH” STRATEGY BEING APPLIED
Giving up approximately about the same amount of height with “Sugar Ray” as he will with the elongated Morales, Manny comes out relaxed, at least for the first 20 seconds. That was when the “Manila Stalker” took a step towards Beltran, this before dipping to his right as a right hand sails over Pacquiao’s left shoulder. All in one move, “Pac-Man” is in position to throw his right hook. With his elbow in position, Beltran would block the first Pacquiao punch with bad intentions on it.
MANNY SHOWS PATIENCE AND WILL!
But as the session wore on, and with only 30-seconds rest periods in between stanzas, Pacquiao began to impose his will on Beltran. Landing with the right hook, to both the body and head, these punches Manny began to connect with had increased leverage, power, this as the “Pac-Man” held his “money” punch, the left cross and lead in abeyance. And just as I was scribbling a note about Manny not using the left, there went the cross that landed squarely on the chin of Beltran, who took it well.
“SUGAR RAY” LOOKING TO MOVE UNNATURALLY!
With Beltran now looking to move to his right, instead of what is the norm to his left, Manny began catching him time and again with the left. Realizing he was fighting a bit stiff, Beltran began to move his head in an attempt to escape the “money” punch that is the left cross and lead. But as Beltran adjusted, so did the champion from the Philippines. After missing twice in succession, this after right jabs, Pacquiao picked up on the fact that Beltran’s chin was on the move. And instead of shooting those straight lefts and crosses at Beltran’s chin, Manny had lowered the target zone some six to eight inches.
PACQUIAO ADJUSTS CANNONS AS TARGET DOES!
Firing shots at the sternum area of Beltran, Manny Pacquiao couldn’t miss! Once Pacquiao got the left landing at a pretty good clip, he went back to working on single, double, and triple right hooks. With “Sugar Ray’s” left side getting pounded by the hooks, Manny then went back to working on the left cross AKA that “money” punch! Following Beltran, Justin Juuko stepped between the ropes and without much rest (20 seconds?), Juuko and Manny were slinging leather back and forth at each other.
COULD “EL TERRIBLE” HANDLE THIS HEAT?
Utterly impressive in almost every facet of his game, I wondered how would Erik Morales deal with this obviously well conditioned Pacquiao? Unlike the fighter that fought Juan Manuel Marquez last May, “Pac-Man” wasn’t sucking air or looking tired after seven rounds of almost continuous sparring. Reason being, this time Manny did not come to camp to lose a lot of weight, as was the case for the May 2004 fight with Marquez.

kadyo 03-07-2005, 10:18 PM Pacquiao training like crazy
By nick giongco
MANNY PACQUIAO knows the dangers of squaring off with a tried and tested warrior in Erik Morales so the Filipino southpaw is not taking any chances going into the final phase of his training for the March 19 battle in Las Vegas.
He has even decided that to enhance his chances, Pacquiao has got to go the extra mile.
Speaking from his rented two-bedroom condominium unit right in the heart of Hollywood yesterday afternoon (Sunday night in the US), Pacquiao revealed that he is expected to log a total of 163 rounds of sparring by the time he departs for the MGM Grand on March 14.
"Ngayon pa lang ay 137 rounds na ang total sparring ko at mayroong pang 26 rounds na natitira na bubunuin ko this week," said Pacquiao, who took a break in training on Sunday. "Ngayon lang ako aabot ng ganoong karaming rounds."
What pumps up Pacquiao is the fact that when he humiliated Marco Antonio Barrera in late-2003 in San Antonio, Texas, the GenSan puncher only racked up a little over 100 rounds of sparring.
Against another Mexican, Juan Manuel Marquez, last year, Pacquiao also logged almost the same amount of rounds. That fight ended on a 12-round split draw with Marquez recovering from three knockdowns in the first round.
"Sa labang ito ay talagang todo ako sa ensayo dahil alam kong hindi madali ang labang ito kahit na mayroong nagsasabi na kayang-kaya ko si Morales."
Last week, Pacquiao sparred for 12 furious rounds at the Wild Card Boxing Club of his chief trainer Freddie Roach and later admitted that he felt as if he had just fought a regular bout.
But when pressed for comment a week later regarding the rigorous training regimen he’s been undergoing under Roach and his able assistants, Pacquiao sounded ****y.
"Wala na (ang sakit). Nasanay na ako dyan," said Pacquiao, who started his training for the Morales fight in the second week of January.
Pacquiao believes he will not encounter problems with the scales during the official weighing scheduled on the eve of the HBO Pay-Per-View fight dubbed "Coming With Everything."
"Wala akong nakikitang problema dyan. Siguro ay titimbang ako ng mga 128 or 129 at sa laban mismo ay mga 136 to 138 na ako."
The weight limit is 130 lbs and this will be the first time that Pacquiao is fighting in this weight class. In contrast, Morales, who is two years older than Pacquiao at 28, has fought several times in the 130-lb backyard.
NOTES: There is so much interest in the March 19 fight that personalities from the world of politics, showbiz and sports are heading to Las Vegas to watch Manny Pacquiao live in action. Several congressmen, mayors, a senator and two action stars are going to be at ringside on fight night and Pacquiao has been having some sort of a problem trying to budget the tickets that will be given to him free of charge. "Pinangakuan ako ng 25 tickets at pitong kuwarto sa MGM Grand pero sa tingin ko kukulangin dahil marami ang magpupuntahan sa laban ko," said Pacquiao, who nevertheless made it clear that there are already owners of those complimentary passes. "Baka nga bumili pa ako ng 20 pa"... Arriving in Las Vegas during fight week are First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, Games and Amusements Board Chairman Eric Buhain, Sen. Lito Lapid, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, Geneneral Santos City Mayor Pedro Acharon, North Cotabato Gov. Manny Piñol, and movie stars Robin Padilla and Cesar Montano ... Z Gorres, a protégé of Tony Aldeguer and Rudy Salud, is fighting underneath the Pacquiao headliner against a still to be named foe. Salud, formerly the secretary-general of the World Boxing Council, and Aldeguer, a Cebu boxing patron, will be there to provide morale boost … Tickets are priced at $400, $300, $200, $125 and $75 (sold out) ... For a fee, HBO will beam the fight at $44.95 to US home ... Reduced media rates for accredited members of the press at the 5,005-room MGM Grand Hotel is pegged at $129. The rate will slightly increase on the eve and day of the fight.

Pacquiao sharp in workout!
By Karl Freitag
A huge media turnout were on hand for Manny Pacquiao media day at the Freddie Roach's Wild Card Gym in Hollywood, California. Pacquiao looked explosive in his workout, but you won't be seeing it on the evening news. All cameras were required to be turned off while Pacquiao sparred with Jose Armando Santa Cruz. "There's too many people in my gym," Roach told *********.com. Freddie said that Manny is currently at 129 pounds and has lost none of his speed at the higher weight. Pacquiao's last day of sparring will be on Monday, at which point Team Pacquiao will drive from L.A. into Las Vegas. His March 19 PPV opponent Erik Morales will be arriving in Las Vegas by jet from Mexico on Tuesday. (Photo: Chris Farina/Top Rank)

Boxer Manny Pacquiao gets ready for a workout Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at the Wild Card Gym in the Hollywood section of Los Angeles. Pacquiao, 39-2-2 (30 KOs), from The Philippines, and Erik Morales, 47-2 (34 KOs), from Mexico, not seen, will face each other in a battle of three-time world champions, Saturday, March 19, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, in Las Vegas. (AP Photo/Damian Dovarganes)
LOS ANGELES—Gauging by the huge turnout of US-based media personalities during Tuesday’s press workout hosted by Manny Pacquiao, his March 19 battle with Erik Morales will surely be a media event that is going to catch everyone’s attention.
Anxious mediamen even didn’t let Pacquiao dress up and tape his hands as they started throwing questions and shooting photographs as soon as the “Pacman” alighted from his SUV. The charismatic People’s Champion didn’t mind answering questions even under the searing heat of the sun, without the aid of an interpreter.
Scribes from several national dailies and distinguished boxing writers showed how popular Pacquiao has become in the US by waiting in line for a chance to shoot their questions. Writers from the Latino community and the Filipino press were also at hand to see Pacquiao in action.
“I never thought that Pacquiao was this good. I saw his previous fight with (Juan Manuel) Marquez and he is not the one-dimensional fighter that many writers claim,” said a Latino writer, who requested that his name not be printed. “It is going to be a war when he meets Morales,” he added.
Pacquiao sparred with the tall and unbeaten Jose Sta. Cruz (18-0) as well as Raymundo Beltran and completely dominated every round. In the last round, he let Beltran punch with gusto to his midsection until the end of the round, drawing oohs and aahs from the appreciative crowd who believed that the Filipino has reached peak form.
Trainer Freddie Roach requested that the sparring sessions wouldn’t be taped or photos be taken with flash bulbs but still Pacquiao proved that his readiness is enough material for the mediamen to cover.
While Pacquiao held an open workout, there was not much news about Morales, who is reportedly still in the mountains of Mexico City training for his “comeback” fight after losing to arch-rival and fellow Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera last year.
Pacquiao said he still has some adjustments to make as he wanted to move more freely and more relaxed, feeling that he was a little bit tense and tight.
“I am expected to log in at least 160 rounds of sparring until we close camp on Monday and this fight will be the hardest that I have ever prepared for,” said Pacquiao, who weighed in at an unofficial 129 pounds, one pound below the limit despite eating his heart out.
“I will not make any prediction for this fight but I will assure you that I will give my best for all my fans to see. I hope they watch me on March 19 at the MGM Grand or on pay-per-view,” said Pacquiao, smiling, as he sounded like a salesman.

LOS ANGELES, California, United States of America -- An eager horde of Mexican media men were surprised to see Manny Pacquiao, described by his trainer to be in peak form, receive clear blows to the head during a sparring session yesterday at the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood.
Pacquiao, sluggish and slow, hardly resembled the sharp, ferocious Filipino knockout artist the Mexicans had come to see.
One Latino scribe walked away obviously convinced that Erik Morales was right in saying that Pacquiao was a one-dimensional fighter.
"Manny, Erik said you don't move inside the ring, you just stand still," the Mexican reporter had asked before Pacquiao started sparring.
"That's his opinion, we prepared long and hard for this fight," Pacquiao had countered.
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, was quick to assure there was no need to worry.
Roach told the Inquirer that Pacquiao was "a hundred per cent and ready to go."
Roach would however sound like a big liar based on Pacquiao's lethargic stand against
his first sparring partner, Jose Sta. Cruz (18-0), a five-foot-eight full lightweight who simulated the fighting style of Morales.
Pacquiao worked the body well, but was often on the receiving end of Sta. Cruz's slow right hand, a flaw that had Puerto Rican cutman Lenny de Jesus shaking his head.
The second sparmate, Sugar Ray Beltran, often had to stop punching whenever Pacquiao would balk at mid-ring.
Beltran, strong and speedy, was allowed to belt at Pacquiao's abdomen as the sparring headed to an end.
Roach had to be asked if Pacquiao had any problem.
"Nothing," Roach said, "Manny was just playing with these boys."
Journalist Winchell Campos, who has been covering the training since early January, reported that several Pacquiao sparmates had to be decommissioned due to injuries.
But most members of the Mexican media that attended training yesterday walked away convinced that Pacquiao had been overrated.
Buboy Fernandez, Pacquiao's trusted Filipino handler, however, explained Pacquiao was not supposed to box his best before the Mexican audience.
"Hindi puwedeng ipakita lahat (We were not supposed to bare all)," Fernandez said.
It was later said that spies from the Morales camp were able to squeeze themselves into the Mexican media group.
Yesterday's sparring session at Wild Card should help level the odds for the March 19 showdown, wherein Pacquiao has continued to be favored.
Pacquiao, who has promised the Mexican press a good, exciting fight, leaves for Las Vegas with his team on Monday.
Morales is expected at the fight site on the same day.

'Manila Ice' = "Top Secret!"
By - Bret "The Threat" Newton
Manny Pacquiao held an open workout today at the Wild Card GYM in Los Angeles where he sparred for 8 rounds and showed some new footwork and defense applied to the already 'in your face' action style. Of course, what was on mind was all this 'Manila Ice' hype, and just what exactly is this new technique trainer Freddie Roach has worked on with Pacquiao in preparation for his fight with Erik Morales: "It's top secret!", said Pacquiao. "You will find out on March 19th."
Hmm, no cracks just yet then, however, Pacquiao did share this: "I feel this is the same type of fight I had with Barrera. I feel that they are on the same level so I have prepared the same. This is just as big of a fight as the Barrera one for me. This is going to be a very good fight."

LOS ANGELES, California, United States of America -- Trainer Freddie Roach said Manny Pacquiao's newly minted right hook, labeled as Manila Ice, will knock out Erik Morales but Pacquiao's sparmates yesterday disagreed and swore the blazing left hand will do the job.
"If Manny hits him with that big left, it's gonna be over," testified Jose Sta. Cruz, a rangy, undefeated (18-0) lightweight who got banged by Pacquiao for three furious rounds before a second sparmate was called in yesterday.
Sta. Cruz, who had tagged Pacquiao with jarring head shots in a previous sparring, said the RP boxing hero has a tremendous chance of winning.
"He's in great shape really, he has great power, speed, everything," Sta. Cruz said after Pacquiao flashed his full worth yesterday.
Sta. Cruz, as tall as Morales, fights at 135 pounds but weighed 142 pounds for yesterday's sparring against Pacquiao who checked in at 129.
"He just keeps getting stronger, he keeps on improving," said Sugar Ray Beltran, the second Pacquiao sparmate.

man, he's a stronger puncher, a terrific left, better than ever, I'm gonna put my money on him," Beltran added.
Yesterday's speed and power demonstration by Pacquiao was a big leap from his sluggish session before the Mexican media on Tuesday when he obviously pulled his punches.
After the well-applauded sparring, Roach said Pacquiao is ready to go for a knockout.
Roach said he would appreciate it if Morales comes in at over 140 pounds for the fight, because that would make the Mexican easier to catch.
Pacquiao said he would win but refused to state whether it would be by points or stoppage.
"I have to do my very best for my countrymen who are all praying for me," Pacquiao told a television reporter.
General Santos City mayor Pedro Acharon witnessed yesterday's workout and expressed confidence that Pacquiao would win by knockout.
Many other Pacquiao backers, led by First Gentleman Mike Arroyo, are expected at ringside in Las Vegas for the March 19 showdown.
Pacquiao's wife, Jinkee, is expected to join the world boxing celebrity Sunday at his new quarters at the corner of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street.
Pacquiao drives to Las Vegas in a convoy on Monday, the same day Morales is expected in the gambling capital.
