PHILADELPHIA – Hours after the most electrifying domination in a career filled with them, deep in a back hallway of the Wachovia Center, Anderson Silva was waiting for Dana White. Silva is the UFC’s middleweight (185-pound) champion but Saturday he boldly moved up 20 pounds and in a jaw-dropping exhibition, brutalized Forrest Griffin, who just nine months ago was the light heavyweight (205) title holder.

Silva knocked Griffin down twice, offered a hand to help him up once and then promptly floored him again for good at 3:23 of the first round of UFC 101. Most remarkably, he did it with a punch he threw while backpedaling.

It was a complete annihilation. Griffin failed to land a single punch and when he came to his senses, he sprung up and ran from the octagon, trying to push through a doctor’s examination.

“He might be in Georgia by now, he ran out and I haven’t seen him since,” White, the UFC president, joked.

That Silva could move up a weight class and not just win, but destroy with power, was a game-changing and perhaps UFC-altering moment. That’s what Silva and his manager, Ed Soares, wanted to discuss with White.

With his arm wrapped around White’s shoulder, Soares leaned in and delivered a proposition. “Spider” Silva would move permanently to light heavyweight, even if it meant the unorthodox move of giving up his middleweight belt.

“I can do that,” White smiled, a bit stunned at the offer. “I like that. We can do that.”

Soares smiled and shook White’s hand. Silva had been accosted by a fan by then and couldn’t hear White, but it was presumably the news he was seeking. The man has such outrageous confidence in his abilities he’s willing to potentially toss away a championship he’s owned for almost three years to take a challenge outside his comfort zone.

“I’d let him,” White said later, sitting in his quiet dressing room. “We’d put [the middleweight title] up for grabs.”

The hour was late and everyone’s excitement was still high. Perhaps plans and goals change by morning, so White didn’t know what to say officially. This was still just hurried talk. He knew this much though, as a promoter there are more blockbuster fights for Silva at 205 than 185, where he’s beaten everyone of note.

Silva’s next title defense was supposed to be against Dan Henderson, who Silva savagely choked out in March 2008.

“Who knows,” White said, wheels already spinning. “We’ll see what happens. In the talks I’ve had with Anderson, he wants to take on the best in the world. He’s the most talented fighter in the world, the best pound for pound fighter and it’s a joke to say anyone else is. And he wants to continue to prove [it].”

White thought for a moment.

“He would jump in that mix [at the top of the light heavyweight division],” White said. “You’ve got Rashad [Evans], you’ve got Rampage [Jackson], [Lyoto] Machida is the champion. And Tito [Ortiz] is in the mix now.”

If Silva did vacate the middleweight title to move up full time, the ironic thing is that he claims it wouldn’t be to pursue the light heavyweight belt. At least as long as it was held by Machida, a fellow Brazilian and training partner.

“Lyoto is my friend, he is my brother and there is no way that fight will ever happen,” Silva said.

White, coveting a clash between two men who are both unbeaten in UFC competition, brushes that talk aside.

“I’ll make it happen,” White said winking his eye. “It’s not even about money. It’s about proving you’re the best, it’s about securing your place in history. It’s about putting on a super fight that fans want to see.

“I’m all about making big fights that fans want to see.”

Saturday was one of those fights. Silva was motivated by criticism that his last two fights – both victories mind you ¬– were dull, so he gladly moved up to take on a dangerous Griffin, who was known for his attack dog style.

It was intriguing, at least until Silva started toying with Griffin. He knocked Griffin down at will, dared him to connect with a punch, challenged him to be as tough as his reputation and then finally just finished him.

Coming in there was a “Rocky” element to the fight, Griffin the heavy underdog with the Philly crowd firmly behind him and booing Silva. By the end, Griffin was gone and Silva was being cheered. It was the recognition of brilliance overcoming any easy Hollywood storylines.

“He wants to be involved in the biggest fights we can put together,” Soares said.

The fact Silva took this fight is a testament to that. The Brazilian is 25-4 overall and has won all 10 of his fights in the UFC. At age 34, he could’ve sat at middleweight and potentially won 10 more, making nice money with relatively little risk in a division he’s been untouchable in.

That isn’t him though. Not even close.

So not long after stunning the sport with a legendary performance, there he and his manager were, trying to force a back-hall huddle with the UFC kingmaker. Move Silva to light heavyweight for good, they suggested to White.

With nothing left to prove at middleweight, Anderson Silva now wants to lay waste to a whole new division of the UFC. He doesn’t need a belt to prove a thing.

Lets see....

Fight 1: loser of Rampage vs Rashad
Fight 2: Tito Ortiz
Fight 3: Jon Jones

I don't think he'll ever fight Machida, because they like each other too much and don't want to. After that I see him bowing out of the UFC.

IMO Shogun vs Silva should be in place of Ortiz.

would have liked to see Cung Le come over from Strikefarce to try his hand at Anderson...but oh well. Still dont really see the point of Anderson moving up if he isnt going to face Machida which he has said he would not. that being said...dont see anyone other than Machida really bothering Anderson much at 205

anderson could be doing this to get out of his contract. if you're the champ, the contract automatically renews. if he reliquinshes the title, he's not held to the stipulation

he can move to LHW and never fight for the title since Machida has. fight 3 times, and go box roy (since he seems adamant about doing that)

Dan Henderson would be pretty pissed lol although I think its a win win imo, we can see the spider at 205 and Dan can rule the middleweight division or he can just stay at 205 full time and open up the market for the 185 contenders

A LHW who can wrestle should cause him some problems.

I doubt anyone in the LHW has the wrestling skills that would be on par with Hendo.

A LHW who can wrestle should cause him some problems.

Dan Henderson tried. Although Dan did win the first round, he was completely dominated in the second round and lost via rear naked choke. So even world class wrestlers like Henderson cannot cause Silva problems.

Silva looked a little fat in his fight against Griffin though.

Fedor is a chubby russian and he's one of the best fighters in the world, and regardless after saturday night i don't think Anderson is worried about his condition

Spider and Dragon will fukk up the entire 205 division

Silva looked a little fat in his fight against Griffin though.

It's only natural that he looks bigger than at 185 since he's in a different weight class. That's obvious. The important thing is that his added weight doesn't drastically effect his speed. And from the looks of it, it doesn't look like it has.

Silva was a big MW, he walks anywhere around from 210-220lbs.

Okami is great and all, but Silva would demolish that kid. =[

I have nothing against the idea that Silva vacated the MW belt and fought in LHW superfights for the remaining of his contract. He truly has beaten everyone worth fighting there and a couple of non-worthy.

If (a very BIG if) Shogun won against Machida he could also go for the belt in the LHW div. I guess no one would say that he's not a worthy contender, I'd have him as a worthy contender even at the HW division if he decided to do that. He's not small and would have a huge speed and skill advantage there.

it wont surprise me if silva wins the light heavy belt before his contract is up.

look at bj penn and hendo, they have held belts in 2 diff weight classes. i dont see silva not being capable of achieving this. i think he can beat machida, hopefully he can put their friendship aside and give the fans what they want to see. a win over machida would solidify #1p4p in my book.

I really dont see the hype in okami at all. His fights are quite boring, his biggest win was a complete fluke against Silva, he's got some wins over mid level UFC middleweights like Jason Macdonald, but he's never really beaten any elite comp. He ko-ed a vastly overrated Evan Tanner(rip) who's middleweight championship reign holds about as much prestige as Kevin Randlemans heavyweight championship reign.

His best wins imo are against Mike Swick, Alan Beltcher and that snoozer against Dean Lister but while Swick and Beltcher are solid wins niether are opponents that merits okami's REDICULOUS number two MW rating that some sites are giving him.

Dean Lister looks flat in MMA comp and he gets whipped whenever he steps up in comp just like okami who got knocked out by Amar Solouv, and lost to Vitale, Jake Shields, and Rich Franklin.

If he completely dominated his not so great opponents like Demian Maia has then I could understand a top 5 ranking but he's getting boring decisions against guys that are supposed to not be on his level.

So in closing in continuing with his past career fights he's fighting yet another good but not top ten MW (i cant believe sherdog has him ranked at number 10) in Chael Sonnan that probably also gonna be a crappy fight and the only reason I would want him to get a title shot is so the Spider could knock his head off his body and people can cut the okami talk out.

Bricks you still training your ground game at Renzo's school. Its a top notch school but its way to much guap in my opinion

Yeah, and imagine a pissed off Silva avenging his team mates loss (Lyoto he won't fight whatever the situation at the moment)... Epic beating to whoever standing in front of him.

A. Silva on the ground or standing up. Only way for Tito to win is a punch on the button with enough force and accuracy.

You'll be surprised at how good Ortiz is on the ground. He literally had Machida at the skin of his teeth. Not many people can do much against Ortiz once he gets the fight to the ground.

stand up is still a fail but I dont doubt Ortiz's ground game and takedown skills at all.

Of course, Tito is a wrestler but if taken to the ground he'll either be neutralized or submitted IMO.
