I'd say Ali was pretty slippery in his pre-exile days.

I actually saw a gif around here today with Gatti ducking and slipping a load of Gomez' punches beautifully.

Yes,I believe he was the 2nd best defensive heavyweight.Jack Johnson was the best defensive fighter and hardest to hit.

Ali was the most elusive and almost impossible to hit with a clean punch in his prime.

what would you rather watch & who would most people love & remember?

a great defensive fighter or a great offensive fighter?

I'd rather watch the guy who is great at inflicting damage than the guy who is great at avoiding it. That said, I can still admire both.

...this isn't a thread to debate who the greatest was people :lol1:

They can all discuss who's the second best. Chaplin is the undisputed number 1...

I've actually been making a video of the greatest defensive artists in boxing history for a while now and it'll probably be finished soon. I might as well post it in this thread to liven up the discussion, even if it's not what I intended at first.

I posted this rare video of Locche fighting fellow great Carlos Ortiz in another read but it got few responses:

...the problem being I think hardly any of the posters watched, or even saw the video :lol1:

Looking forward to seeing it.

Locche is ridiculously anonymous for such a great (and even beautiful) fighter. The grace of those upper body movements wouldn't be seen again until Pernell Whitaker.

The ten best defensive fighters I have seen are:

Pernell Whitaker
Floyd Mayweather, Jr
Wilfred Benitez
Bernard Hopkins
James Toney
Roy Jones, Jr.
Chris Byrd
Dwight Muhammad Qawi
Michael Spinks
Jimmy Young

In my opinion Pep, whitaker, Mayweather and Toney are all in a class of their own as far as defence goes
