Press conference news and quotes:

Trinidad-Wright presser!

February 21, 2005

By Gerardo M. Avila-Planas

The last time former three-time world Champion Felix "Tito" Trinidad was involved in an open to the public press conference, thousands of his countrymen literally chased his opponent off of the island. Four years later, Trinidad went back to the Roberto Clemente Coliseum of San Juan, to participate in the first of a series of promotional conferences that will include New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas. This time, the opponent super welterweight champion Ronald "Winky" Wright, wasn't chased out the building, although we can surely say that he was not exactly the man of the hour in Trinidad country.

Don King commended Tito and Wright for taking the fight and for the sportsmanship shown throughout their careers. "This guy (Winky) is not Bernard Hopkins. What Hopkins did here was an atrocity and we don't expect that from Winky because he's a classy guy. As the crowd booed Winky Wright prior to taking the stage, Don King said in his unique way, "Don't let your heart be troubled. We can afford to be kind and generous and nice to our next victim.

During Gary Shaw's turn at the podium, he declared "Sometimes fighters make mistakes inside the ring, but with all due respect, Tito and Papa Trinidad have just made a mistake outside of the ring by signing this fight." He then concluded by saying that once Winky beats Tito they would come and celebrate in Puerto Rico instead of Disneyland.

In his turn, a respectful and classy Winky Wright thanked Tito for the opportunity. "There have been a lot of fighters out there that have been running from me for a long time and Id like to thank Trinidad for this opportunity and taking this challenge." He then said that he expects a great performance come May 14th. "I've never been a loser and I don't plan on being a loser this time around either."

Tito on the other hand said that he has a lot of respect for Winky and that he is very well aware of his opponent's credentials and awkward southpaw stance but he then said that he "wanted to make clear that he will be the seventh south paw to be defeated by Tito Trinidad." He then looked towards Winky and said "You have until May 14th to decide if you want to go at it with me or not."

Papa Trinidad said that the first big blow of the fight has already been landed with the presence and influence of the crowd during the conference. We know that Winky is a great champion that he fights defensively but that he can also be very offensive and that's why we will study his fights to help Tito come out with the victory. He concludes by sarcastically thanking Shaw for his comments. "When we fought Mayorga he repeated constantly that we made a mistake by taking him as an opponent and Gary Shaw has said the same thing. I want to thank you for saying that because that motivates me more to prepare Tito well."

My prediction is Trinidad, being a southpaw doesnt seem to hurt Trinidad in the slightest way and Winky thinks he can match power with Trinidad....Winky should give Trinidad trouble provided he doesnt stand their and keeps his punches straight, but any power shots by Winky will hurt him more than Trinidad.
