I made the thread about how well Lennox Lewis would do against some ATG's. Most people thought he'd lose to them.

How would he do against the some of the ATG's best opponents?

(These may not be the best of the best opponents, there just a few I could think of)

Lewis vs. Joe Bugner

Lewis vs. Jerry Quarry

Lewis vs. Ron Lyle

Lewis vs. Earnie Shavers

Lewis vs. Ernie Terrell

Lewis vs. Ken Norton

Lewis vs. Michael Spinks

Lewis vs. Gerry Cooney

Lewis vs. Trevor Berbick

I'd say...

Bugner, Terrell & Norton by decision with Norton causing the most problems..

Quarry, Lyle Shavers & Berbick by late KO with Lyle causing the problems..

Cooney & Spinks by early KO.. Not before getting buzzed by Cooney's left..

IMO Lennox Lewis loses to Quarry, Lyle, Norton, Spinks and beats the rest

ask yourself the question "Which of the opponents who Lewis fought in his pro career could beat the above fighters"

Answer - None!

Well that isn't hard..

Try...

Holyfield
Ruddock
Morrison
Mercer
Grant
Tyson
Tua
Bruno
McCall
Weaver
Golota

Stop splitting hairs & admit that you you hate him intensely..

Shavers and Lyle always have a puncher's chance to do what McCall and Rahman managed to. Cooney had the big left hook as well.

Quarry would be facing a big size disadvantage and would probably be discouraged trying to get to the taller, patiently boxing Lewis.

Bugner would likely survive the distance but do too little to make it competitive.

Norton was a fair puncher and knew how to put on pressure but he seemed intimidated by big punchers. Either Lewis blows him out in the early rounds as he did to Golota and Grant, or he wins a close decision if he fights more cautiously.

Berbick, Spinks and Terrell were all awkward fighters who could all trouble even the best on their worst day. Berbick however was a terrible boxer, Spinks was a light heavyweight and Terrell was somewhat limited to his jab and grab style.

Each in turn:

Lewis vs. Joe Bugner: A decision win for Lennox, a tough one! Joe's handspeed was lightning fast but I think Lewis has the heavier hands. I have a documentary recorded where Joe is interviewed and questioned about Lewis. Joe said something very similar to 'he may even be a little bit better than I was' with a wink. Says enough for me.

Lewis vs. Jerry Quarry: KO win for Lewis, at least as fast as Frazier did it, around round six or seven.

Lewis vs. Ron Lyle: Big, big risk. My money would be on Lewis to score a late rounds stoppage. But I'd be a nervous spectator! Lyle certainly possessed the power to KO Lennox.

Lewis vs. Earnie Shavers: Even bigger risk! Again, I would expect Lewis to score a late rounds stoppage if he didn't walk into an atom bomb right hand (as Holmes did!), he was technically superior and Shavers didn't have an amazing chin. If Shavers did land, I'd almost certainly expect a one punch KO. In fact, I'd go so far as to say if these guys were to meet twice, I'd bet Shavers would win one by KO.

Lewis vs. Ernie Terrell: Lennox does everything better than Terrell, I'd expect a comfortable decision win.

Lewis vs. Ken Norton: I've always felt that Lewis wins this one by KO. After watching Norton lose to Foreman, Shavers and Cooney I just think that Lennox is too big, strong and powerful. Norton may well be tricky and throw Lewis off with that wierd style but I think the clock would be ticking!

Lewis vs. Michael Spinks: Tough call, Take away Spink's Tyson loss and you have a guy with pretty solid credentials. Problem is, I think a peak Lennox is a bit better and hits much harder than the 1986 Holmes (who probably should have got the decision in Spinks 2). I'll opt for a tough Lewis decision win.

Lewis vs. Gerry Cooney: For me Cooney fits into the Lyle and Shavers bracket of dangerous punchers who could well KO Lewis if he landed, but he also had a dubious chin. He did have great height and fair speed. I think Lennox shades him for overall ability and......incident aside should get a late stoppage.

Lewis vs. Trevor Berbick: Solid decision win for Lennox, tough in places. Berbick did well against Holmes and Thomas. He may fill the brief as a 'McCall type', the sort of guy that Lennox may have overestimated.....and he did have a fair old whack on him. Really though, its a fight that Lennox would be expected to win, but I wouldn't expect a stoppage.

I would have pegged this as an easy win for Lewis. Admittedly I've only seen maybe three of Bugner's fights (one of them against Bruno) so I'll defer to you on this one.

Lewis vs. Jerry Quarry: KO win for Lewis, at least as fast as Frazier did it, around round six or seven.

I think Lennox busts Quarry up with his jab and gets a mid to late round stoppage due to cuts or accumulated punishment.

Lewis vs. Ron Lyle: Big, big risk. My money would be on Lewis to score a late rounds stoppage. But I'd be a nervous spectator! Lyle certainly possessed the power to KO Lennox.

Agreed. Lewis SHOULD out-box the wild swinging Lyle but the possibility is always there for Ron to get him out of there with a haymaker.

Lewis vs. Earnie Shavers: Even bigger risk! Again, I would expect Lewis to score a late rounds stoppage if he didn't walk into an atom bomb right hand (as Holmes did!), he was technically superior and Shavers didn't have an amazing chin. Couldn't have said it better!

Lewis vs. Ernie Terrell: Lennox does everything better than Terrell, I'd expect a comfortable decision win.

Very similar styles though I'd expect Lewis to cruise to a rather boring decision.

This one really depends on how Lewis approaches the fight. If Lennox tries to box Norton this could turn into a nightmare for him as stylistically Kenny was poison to slick boxers (see Ali and Holmes). If Lewis comes out looking to blast Norton then I think it's over fairly quickly as Kenny was particularly vulnerable stylistically to that (see Foreman and Shavers).

While Spinks is an ATG at Light-Heavyweight I really don't think he was that good at Heavyweight. Lewis by mid rounds KO.

Spot on.

This should be an easy for Lennox.....huge gulf in class here.

Tyson and Holyfield was both a decade past their best so rule those 2 out, None of the other Lewis opponents would stand a chance.
